Open Settings > General > Keyboard on your iPhone to change Auto-Correction, predictive typing, and other keyboard options. To get there while typing, touch and hold the Emoji button or keyboard-switch key, then tap Keyboard Settings.

Change Auto-Correction or predictive typing

These controls affect different behaviors: Auto-Correction changes spelling as you type, while Predictive Text displays likely words or phrases. Choose the one that matches what you want to change.

Turn Auto-Correction on or off

  1. Open Settings > General > Keyboard.
  2. Turn Auto-Correction on or off.

Auto-Correction uses the keyboard dictionary to correct misspelled words and is on by default, according to Apple Support’s iPhone typing guide. In iOS 17 and later, a corrected word is temporarily underlined; tap it if you want to edit the correction.

Turn Predictive Text off or on

  1. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard.
  2. Turn Predictive Text on or off.

Predictive Text displays suggested words or phrases above the keyboard. On supported versions and languages, predictions can also appear inline in the text. Turning Predictive Text off also disables inline predictions, but spelling corrections may still appear because Auto-Correction is a separate setting. Feature availability varies by language. See Apple’s guide to predictive text on iPhone.

Doohoeek Universal Bluetooth Mini Keyboard, Wireless Compact Keyboard with Orange Navigation Keys & Any-Angle Stand for Android/iOS/Windows, Dual-Device Keypad for Phones/Galaxy Z Fold/iPad mini
  • Can't Connect the Bluetooth? Please reset the keyboard and then reconnect the Bluetooth: 1. Turn on the keyboarad; 2. Press and hold the first and the last key at the top row of the keyboard until all indicators start flashing; 3. Bluetooth light flickers quickly, auto entering Bluetooth pairing mode (If not, press Fn + 1 or 2); 4. Search and find "Wireless keyboard".
  • Multi-OS Compatible: The keyboard is widely compatible with Android, Windows and iOS devices. Also the basic typing function works with other OS devices such as fire tablets.
  • Connect 2 Devices: Seamless switching between 2 Bluetooth devices (iOS/Android/Windows) with single-tap transitions (Fn+"1"/ "2").
  • Orange Keys for Productivity Boost: The color-coded design help you to position the keys effortlessly and reduce mistyping. The orange keys are more visible than standard keys, engineered for speed typists.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: Only 6oz weight and slim 0.6in profile fits in most handbags. The flexible hinge allows you to fold it up for travel – perfect for coffee shops, flights, or campus life.

Stop one word from being changed

If you want suggestions to remain on but need to preserve a particular name, spelling, or phrase, add it to Text Replacement rather than disabling Auto-Correction for everything.

  1. Open Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement.
  2. Tap the add button.
  3. Enter the word or phrase you want to keep in the Phrase field and leave Shortcut blank.
  4. Save the entry.

For a normal shortcut, enter the full text as the phrase and the abbreviation as the shortcut, then save. When you type the shortcut, the keyboard can replace it with the phrase. Apple documents both uses in its instructions for Auto-Correction and predictive text and Text Replacement on iPhone.

Resetting the keyboard dictionary is a broader step: it deletes custom words and keyboard shortcuts. Avoid resetting it if you only need to protect one word from correction.

Make the keyboard easier to use one-handed

  1. While the onscreen keyboard is open, touch and hold the Emoji button or keyboard-switch key.
  2. Choose the left-handed or right-handed keyboard layout.
  3. To center the keyboard again, tap the opposite edge of the screen.

This changes the onscreen keyboard’s position; it does not change Auto-Correction or require a physical keyboard. Apple describes the keyboard menu and layout options in its iPhone onscreen keyboard guide.

Use a physical keyboard or accessibility typing aids

A physical keyboard is optional: it is not needed to change onscreen keyboard settings. iPhone can work with Magic Keyboard or another physical keyboard. If you use one and need typing assistance, Apple lists Key Repeat, Sticky Keys, and Slow Keys under Settings > Accessibility > Keyboards & Typing in its keyboard accessibility guide. These settings are distinct from the onscreen Auto-Correction and Predictive Text controls.

Which setting should you change?

  • Words change when you type: adjust Auto-Correction, or add an exception through Text Replacement.
  • Suggestions appear above the keyboard or inline: adjust Predictive Text. Inline predictions are available only in supported languages and versions.
  • You want the keyboard shifted to one side: use the one-handed layout from the Emoji or keyboard-switch menu.
  • You type on a connected keyboard: check the accessibility typing aids if key behavior is the issue.
