Open Settings, tap your name (or Apple Account), then tap iCloud. From there, use See All beside Saved to iCloud to manage individual apps, or open iCloud Backup, Drive, Photos, and storage controls. Labels and feature availability can vary by iOS version and region.
Find iCloud settings on your iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name at the top of the screen. If your name is not shown, look for Apple Account.
- Tap iCloud.
This is the main place to choose what uses iCloud, manage storage, and configure backup. Apple’s iPhone guide covers the route and iCloud features at Use iCloud on iPhone.

Choose which apps use iCloud
- Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
- Tap See All beside Saved to iCloud.
- Tap an app or feature, then change its iCloud setting.
When iCloud is enabled for an app, its information can be stored in iCloud and kept in sync across devices. If you turn iCloud off for an app, it stops connecting to iCloud and its data remains only on that iPhone. Check what the app stores and whether you need the information on other devices before switching it off. See Apple’s guidance on changing which apps sync and store data with iCloud.

Set up or run an iCloud backup
Make a backup now
- Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup.
- Tap Back Up Now and keep the iPhone connected until the backup finishes.
The iCloud Backup screen shows when the last backup completed.

Turn on automatic backups
On the same iCloud Backup screen, turn on Back Up This iPhone. For automatic backups, Apple requires the iPhone to be connected to power and Wi-Fi, with its screen locked. If iCloud does not have enough space, follow the storage options shown on the iPhone. Apple’s steps are in How to back up your iPhone or iPad with iCloud.
Check and manage iCloud storage
Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud to view storage use. Apple’s support guidance states that iCloud includes 5 GB of free storage; the page does not state a publication year for that figure. The space is shared by backups, iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive, and other iCloud data.

When storage is full, the iPhone cannot back up to iCloud, new photos and videos will not upload to iCloud Photos, and iCloud Drive and other iCloud apps will not stay up to date. iCloud Mail may also be affected. Apple’s iCloud storage management guide describes reviewing storage, deleting files or old backups you no longer need, and considering iCloud+ for more space.

- On iPhone and iPad with iOS 17 or later, look for Recommended for You among the storage suggestions.
- Review backups and which apps are included before removing anything.
- Save a copy of important data before deleting files or backups.
Turning off backup for a selected app also removes that app’s existing information from iCloud. The exact wording and available options may differ by software version, so read the on-screen explanation before confirming a deletion or change.

Turn on or configure iCloud Drive
- Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Drive.
- Turn on Sync this iPhone to use iCloud Drive on the device.
- To manage access for individual apps, return to iCloud and tap See All beside Saved to iCloud.
On supported systems, iCloud Drive is available through the Files app. Files can be accessed on devices signed in to the same Apple Account, subject to available iCloud storage. Apple explains Drive settings at Set up iCloud Drive.
Change iCloud Photos settings
- Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos.
- Choose the available photo syncing and storage options, such as Optimize iPhone Storage.
Optimize iPhone Storage saves device space by keeping smaller versions on the iPhone while the full-resolution originals remain in iCloud. With iCloud Photos, the library syncs across devices, so changes made on one device—including deleting a photo—are reflected on other devices using the same library. Do not treat deleting synced photos as a local-only cleanup. See Apple’s iCloud Photos setup and storage guidance.

Understand sync, backup, and storage before changing settings
- App-level iCloud settings control whether supported apps store or sync their information with iCloud.
- iCloud Backup makes a device backup; it is separate from controlling whether individual apps sync their data.
- iCloud storage is shared among backups, Photos, Drive, and other data. Freeing space in one category can affect what iCloud can store elsewhere.
- iPhone storage is local device capacity. Optimize Storage can help with local photo-library space while originals stay in iCloud.
Check security options carefully
Apple says Standard Data Protection is the default, while Advanced Data Protection extends end-to-end encryption to more categories of iCloud data. If you plan to change advanced protection or account recovery settings, consult Apple’s current Advanced Data Protection setup and security guide first; recovery requirements matter when you may lose access to your account.
