To change Google Maps settings in Android Auto, start navigation on your car’s screen, then tap Settings in Google Maps. That menu contains the route and display controls available for your vehicle. For settings that are easier to reach on a phone, park first and change them in the Google Maps app. Traffic display has its own Settings > Traffic switch, while 3D map detail is configured on the phone at Profile picture or initial > Settings > Navigation > Map display > Map detail > 3D.
Change Google Maps settings from the Android Auto car screen
The car display is the quickest place to adjust options while a route is already running. Google describes the in-car Maps Settings menu as the place to adjust route options, display options, and more. The exact controls and their layout can vary with the vehicle, screen, Android Auto version, and connected phone.
- Connect your phone to Android Auto and open Google Maps on the vehicle display.
- Enter a destination and tap Start so turn-by-turn navigation is active. Some controls are only exposed during an active drive.
- On the map screen, tap Settings. Review the route and display options shown for that setup.
- Tap the option you need, change its switch or selection, and return to the map. If a control is missing, do not assume it has been removed; it may be unsupported by the vehicle, unavailable in your country, or available only in the phone app while parked.
Android Auto is designed for glanceable controls. A destination typed on the car screen requires the vehicle to be in Park; this lockout is a safety restriction and is separate from display preferences.
Turn traffic colors on or off
Traffic display is a direct setting in Android Auto. When enabled, Google Maps can show colored traffic conditions on highways and other roads where traffic information is available.

- Start Google Maps navigation on the car screen.
- Tap Settings.
- Select Traffic.
- Toggle traffic display on or off.
The switch controls the colored traffic overlay. It does not equal traffic-incident reporting, spoken traffic alerts, or an automatic reroute. Those are related features with separate behavior and, for some incident tools, compatibility and country limitations.
If traffic colors do not appear
- Confirm that the Traffic switch is on while navigation is active.
- Check whether the road is covered by available traffic information; Google does not promise colored conditions on every street.
- Allow the map time to refresh after moving into an area with a data connection.
- Check whether the vehicle display is showing a simplified map because of a connection or performance problem.
Change settings in Google Maps on the phone while parked
Google permits navigation settings to be changed in the phone app when the vehicle is parked. This is useful when the car interface hides a control, when a longer menu is easier to read on the phone, or when you want to prepare before driving.
- Park the vehicle safely. Do not use the phone’s screen while driving.
- Open Google Maps on the Android phone.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Settings, then open Navigation.
- Choose the navigation or map-display control you want to change.
After reconnecting to Android Auto, the car display uses the settings that are available to that navigation session. Some changes may appear immediately; others may require stopping and starting navigation again.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Enable or disable 3D map detail
3D map detail is configured in the Android version of Google Maps rather than through the main Android Auto map screen.
- Park before handling the phone.
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Settings > Navigation > Map display > Map detail.
- Turn 3D on or off.
- Start or resume navigation in Android Auto.
Google documents 3D map details during active driving navigation on both the phone and Android Auto. The setting affects map detail, not the route chosen or the traffic-color overlay.
Why a 3D map can change to 2D
If the phone is having performance trouble, such as overheating or losing its connection, Google Maps may switch 3D navigation to 2D for the rest of that drive. Google says 3D can return on the next drive when performance recovers. A temporary 2D map therefore does not necessarily mean the 3D preference was erased.
- Let the phone cool and keep it out of direct sunlight.
- Make sure the phone is securely connected and has enough battery.
- End navigation and start a new trip after the connection or temperature problem is resolved.
- If the map repeatedly falls back to 2D, test another drive without Android Auto to determine whether the issue follows the phone or the car connection.
Which control belongs on the car and which belongs on the phone?
| Need | Primary location | What it changes | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Route and available display options during a trip | Android Auto Google Maps screen: Settings | Options exposed for the current vehicle and navigation session | Menus differ by vehicle and supported features |
| Traffic colors | Android Auto: Settings > Traffic | Colored traffic conditions on roads with available traffic data | Does not control every incident or alert feature |
| 3D map detail | Phone: Profile picture or initial > Settings > Navigation > Map display > Map detail > 3D | Three-dimensional map detail during active navigation | May fall back to 2D for the rest of a drive when phone performance is impaired |
| Accessibility appearance | Android Auto accessibility controls and phone settings | Dark theming, text presentation, and animation behavior where supported | These are not the same as Google Maps route or map-detail settings |
| Navigation, media, and voice loudness | Vehicle controls, with Android Auto or phone controls as applicable | Separate volume channels in vehicles that support them | The exact controls are vehicle-specific; consult the owner’s manual |
Use Android Auto accessibility and display controls separately
Not every visual or spoken change belongs to Google Maps. Android Auto supports hands-free voice commands through Gemini or Google Assistant, and it includes accessibility options such as dark theming. Phone-level accessibility settings can include bold text, outlined text, and removing animations.

Use these controls when the problem affects the whole Android Auto interface rather than the map itself. For example, a darker interface is an Android Auto display preference; it is not the same as turning traffic colors on or changing 3D map detail. Voice commands can help you request navigation without typing, but they do not replace the map’s Settings menu for every display option.
Understand volume controls in the car
Some vehicles keep navigation guidance, media, and voice-assistant audio on separate volume channels. In those cars, turning the knob while a song is playing may change media volume but not spoken directions. Google directs drivers to the vehicle owner’s manual for the precise method used by that vehicle.
When directions are too quiet
- Start navigation so a spoken instruction is playing.
- Adjust the vehicle volume during the instruction; this helps the car identify the navigation channel.
- If the vehicle offers separate guidance, media, or voice settings, adjust the navigation channel in the car’s audio menu.
- Check the owner’s manual if the controls remain unclear. Android Auto cannot expose every manufacturer-specific volume function.
Safety and compatibility limits
Vehicle support is not identical
Android Auto’s screen layout, touch controls, steering-wheel buttons, voice integration, and available Maps options depend on the vehicle. Google directs users to the vehicle manufacturer for compatibility details. A setting visible in one car may be absent or placed elsewhere in another.
Park before using the phone
Google’s phone-side instructions assume the vehicle is parked. Do not open navigation settings, type a destination, or troubleshoot a cable by handling the phone in moving traffic. If you need a new destination while driving, use a supported voice command or have a passenger operate the phone.
Wired and wireless connection differences
Android Auto can be set up through a wired or wireless connection when the phone and vehicle support it. For a wired setup, Google identifies a high-quality USB cable as part of reliable connection guidance. A cable requirement affects whether Android Auto stays connected; it does not add extra Google Maps display controls.
What you need before changing settings
There is no settings-specific accessory or paid upgrade required. Android Auto is integrated with compatible Android phones and vehicles. You need a supported connection, Google Maps on the phone, and access to the car’s Android Auto interface. If your vehicle uses wired Android Auto, use the high-quality USB cable recommended in Google’s setup guidance. Wireless operation is possible only when both the phone and vehicle support it.
Do the phone-side preparation before pulling away. Connect Android Auto while parked, verify that Google Maps appears on the car screen, and make any changes that require touching the phone. Once moving, use the car display or hands-free Gemini or Google Assistant commands instead of handling the handset. This sequence also makes it easier to tell whether a missing option is a safety lockout, a connection problem, or a vehicle capability difference.

How the same setting can look different
The car Settings menu is the in-drive control surface. It shows options that Google Maps and the vehicle can safely expose on that display. The phone’s Navigation menu is the broader preparation surface, including the documented path for 3D map detail. These locations are complementary rather than duplicate menus.
For example, changing Settings > Traffic on the car controls the visible traffic-color layer. It does not configure incident reporting. Turning on 3D through the phone changes map detail for active navigation, but it does not force the phone to keep rendering 3D when Google Maps detects overheating or a lost connection. Dark theme and text options affect the interface or phone accessibility, not route calculation.
Troubleshoot missing or ineffective settings
The Settings button is not visible
- Open Google Maps on the car display rather than another Android Auto app.
- Start a navigation session; some controls appear only after a route begins.
- Look for an overflow or menu button if the vehicle uses a compact layout.
- Check the vehicle’s Android Auto compatibility information because manufacturers expose different controls.
Traffic is enabled but the map remains gray
- Verify that the switch was changed under Settings > Traffic, not an incident-alert menu.
- Move to a road where traffic information is available.
- Check the phone’s data connection and allow the map to refresh.
- End and restart navigation if the overlay remains stale after the connection returns.
3D is enabled but the drive is still 2D
- Confirm the phone path: Profile picture or initial > Settings > Navigation > Map display > Map detail > 3D.
- Start a fresh navigation session after changing the setting.
- Check for overheating, low battery, or an unstable Android Auto connection.
- Remember that Google Maps can deliberately use 2D for the remainder of a drive when performance is impaired, then restore 3D on a later drive.
Phone and car show different options
This is expected when a control is exposed only in one interface or when the vehicle does not support the same display capability. Change phone-side options while parked, then reconnect Android Auto. If a feature still does not appear, consult the vehicle manufacturer’s compatibility information rather than repeatedly resetting Maps.
Voice commands or audio behave unexpectedly
- Use a supported hands-free command through Gemini or Google Assistant for destination entry and basic navigation actions.
- Speak while the assistant is listening and verify that the correct phone is connected.
- Adjust volume while the relevant navigation or voice prompt is playing.
- Use the vehicle manual for separate navigation, media, and voice volume controls.
Traffic display versus traffic incidents and alerts
The colored traffic layer answers one question: how traffic conditions are represented on the map. Incident reporting and alerts answer different questions, such as whether a crash, road hazard, or closure should be reported or announced. Google notes that some incident features depend on compatibility and country availability. Do not treat the presence of a traffic-color switch as proof that every incident tool is supported in your region.
A practical setup sequence before driving
Preparing settings in the right order avoids handling the phone on the road.
- While parked, connect Android Auto and confirm that Google Maps opens.
- On the phone, set 3D map detail if you want it, using the Navigation and Map display path.
- Begin a short navigation session on the car screen and open Settings > Traffic to choose the traffic overlay state.
- Test a spoken instruction and adjust the vehicle’s navigation volume while it plays.
- Once the map and audio behave as expected, begin the actual trip. Use the car screen or voice controls while moving, and wait until parked for phone-side changes.
What to do when a setting keeps reverting
First identify whether the change is a preference or a performance response. A deliberate traffic toggle should remain off or on for the supported interface, whereas a 3D-to-2D change can be an automatic response to overheating or connection loss. Record when the change occurs, then test a new drive with the phone cool, charged, and firmly connected. If only one vehicle shows the problem, its Android Auto implementation or compatibility is the more likely limitation; if multiple cars show it, investigate the phone’s performance and connection.

Why can’t I type a destination on the Android Auto screen?
Google requires the vehicle to be in Park before destination typing is allowed on the car display. This is a safety lockout, not an indication that your map settings are damaged. Use a supported voice command while driving or enter the destination before departure.
Does the Traffic switch report crashes and road hazards?
No. Settings > Traffic controls the colored traffic conditions shown on roads with available traffic information. Incident reporting and alerts are separate features and can have different vehicle, Android Auto, and country availability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy does 3D work on my phone but not in Android Auto?
3D map details are intended to appear during active navigation on both the phone and Android Auto, but the car may not support every display capability. Google Maps can also switch to 2D for the rest of a drive when the phone overheats or loses its connection, then restore 3D on a later drive.
Can I use my phone to change settings while the car is moving?
No. Park safely before opening Google Maps settings, changing 3D map detail, typing a destination, or troubleshooting the connection by handling the phone. While driving, use the car screen, steering-wheel controls, or hands-free Gemini or Google Assistant features supported by your setup.
Why are navigation directions quieter than music?
Some vehicles separate navigation, media, and voice-assistant volume channels. Adjust the vehicle volume while a spoken direction is playing, then consult the owner’s manual for manufacturer-specific audio controls.
Do I need to buy a special cable or device?
No settings-specific purchase is identified. A wired Android Auto setup does require a reliable, high-quality USB cable, while wireless operation depends on support from both the phone and vehicle. A cable can improve connection reliability but cannot unlock additional Google Maps controls.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why is a setting available in one car but not another?
Vehicle manufacturers expose different touch, steering-wheel, voice, and display capabilities. Android Auto also varies with the connected phone and software. Check the vehicle manufacturer’s compatibility information when a control is absent rather than assuming the option has been removed globally.
