To make Google Maps search the right restaurant area, either include the neighborhood or city in the search (for example, restaurants in Chelsea) or allow Maps to use your phone’s location. Notifications are controlled separately: the operating system decides whether Maps can alert you at all, while Maps’ own notification categories decide which alerts are enabled. Personalized place recommendations are a third, account-level setting rather than a restaurant-search notification.
Choose how Google Maps determines the restaurant area
There are two practical ways to set the area used for a restaurant search. You can name a place in the query, or you can let Maps use the device’s current location. The best choice depends on whether you want convenience, a deliberately chosen neighborhood, or less location sharing.
| Method | How it works | Best for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Location-based search | Maps uses the phone’s available location to find restaurants nearby. | Finding food around your current position without typing an area. | Device, app, and sometimes browser permissions must allow location. Accuracy depends on the available location signal. |
| Location in the query | You add a recognizable area, such as “restaurants in Chelsea” or “Italian restaurants near Union Square.” | Searching another neighborhood, planning ahead, or avoiding device-location access. | Results follow the place you typed, not necessarily where the phone is now. |
Specify the area directly in the search
- Open Google Maps and tap the search box.
- Type the cuisine or venue type followed by a location, such as
vegetarian restaurants in Chelsea, breakfast near Union Square, orrestaurants in Austin. - Submit the search and check the map area and result addresses. If Maps still shows the wrong neighborhood, make the location more specific by adding a city, district, landmark, or postal code.
Google recommends adding a location when a nearby search is not producing local results. This method also works when location permission is unavailable, when you are planning a trip, or when you intentionally do not want to grant Maps access to the phone’s position.

A nearby search can use device location only when the phone’s location service and the relevant app permission are available. Android and iPhone or iPad expose these controls in different places.

Android: enable the device location service
- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Tap Location.
- Turn on Use location.
The exact wording can vary by Android manufacturer and version. If Use location is off, Maps cannot obtain the phone’s current position through the normal location service.
Android: give Google Maps the required permission
- Press and hold the Google Maps icon.
- Tap App info.
- Choose Permissions, then Location.
- Select an access level that fits your use, such as Allow only while using the app. Some phones also offer Allow all the time.
- If the permission screen includes a Use precise location switch, turn it on when you want the most accurate nearby results.
Restaurant searches normally do not require all-the-time access. “While using the app” is generally the narrower choice for a person who only wants Maps to locate nearby places while Maps is open. Broader background access is a separate privacy decision and should be enabled only for a feature that genuinely needs it.
Android’s location controls can be split between the device switch, the Maps permission, and the precise-location option. All three can affect what you see. If the device switch is on but Maps’ permission is denied, nearby results may not reflect your position. If precise location is off, Maps may know the general area but place results farther from you.
iPhone or iPad: enable Location Services for Google Maps
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security, then Location Services. On some iOS versions the section is shown as Privacy & Location Services.
- Make sure Location Services is on.
- Find and tap Google Maps.
- Choose the access option that matches your needs, such as permission while using the app.
- Check the Precise Location switch. With it off, Maps can still show local results, but they may be less close to your actual position.
iOS controls location access through Location Services. If the system-level service is disabled, changing the Maps setting alone will not restore current-location searches.
Using Google Maps in a browser
A browser search has two permission layers: the browser app must be allowed to use location, and the Google Maps site must be allowed to request it. The labels differ between browsers, but the process follows this pattern:
- In the phone’s settings, open Location (Android) or Location Services (iPhone or iPad) and allow location for the browser you use.
- Open Google Maps in that browser.
- Use the browser’s site-information or permissions control beside the address bar.
- Set the Google site’s location permission to allow while using the site, if you want nearby results.
- Reload Maps and run the search again.
If either layer blocks access, type the area into the query instead. An explicit search such as restaurants in Chelsea is a reliable fallback and does not depend on browser geolocation.
Choose between convenience, precision, and privacy
Allowing location is the quickest option for an impromptu meal: open Maps, search for restaurants, and let it use the current position. It is most useful when you are walking or driving and do not want to name the neighborhood. The trade-off is that Maps needs access to the device’s location, and the results depend on the quality of the available location signal.
Naming the area in the query gives you deliberate control. You can search a neighborhood before leaving home, compare restaurants in a destination city, or keep device-location permission off. It is also the better fallback when a browser or app cannot obtain a location. The limitation is that you must describe the area clearly enough for Google to interpret it; a city name, district, landmark, or postal code can make an ambiguous search more precise.

For restaurant discovery itself, background or “all the time” access is not required. If you grant Android location permission, “while using the app” usually supplies the access needed for an active Maps search while exposing less location information than continuous background access. On iPhone or iPad, choose the narrowest Location Services option that still supports the way you use Maps. Precise location is useful when distance and walking directions matter, but turning it off can result in nearby results that are less close to your actual position.
Understand what turning location off does—and does not do
Disabling device location prevents apps from obtaining the phone’s device location through the normal location service. It does not guarantee that every local-looking result disappears. Google says Android searches can still use information such as an IP address to provide local results or ads.
That means location permission is not a complete switch for all regional personalization. If your goal is simply to search a different neighborhood, entering that neighborhood in the query is more predictable than repeatedly toggling location. If your goal is to reduce device-location access, turn off the relevant permission and use a named area, while recognizing that network-based signals can still influence some results.
Change Google Maps notification settings
Notifications are separate from the location used for a restaurant search. First check the operating system’s permission to notify; then adjust individual categories inside Google Maps. If the operating system blocks notifications, an enabled Maps category cannot produce an alert.
Android: manage Maps notification categories
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right corner.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Choose a category and use its switch to turn it on or off.
Android can also expose Google Maps’ notification permission in the phone’s app settings. If no Maps alerts arrive even though a category is enabled, open the phone’s Settings > Apps > Maps > Notifications (the exact path varies) and make sure notifications are allowed there as well.
iPhone or iPad: allow notifications at the system level
- Open iOS Settings.
- Tap Notifications, then Google Maps.
- Turn on Allow Notifications and choose where alerts may appear, such as the Lock Screen, Notification Center, or banners.
After the system permission is enabled, adjust Maps’ categories:
- Open Google Maps.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Settings > Notifications.
- Open the relevant category and change its switch.
iOS therefore has two controls: the system-level permission determines whether Maps may notify you at all, and the in-app switches determine which kinds of Maps notifications are requested.

What restaurant-related alerts can mean
Maps does not use one universal “restaurant search” alert. Restaurant-related notifications can be contribution or review prompts, including:

- Requests to add photos of restaurants or bars.
- Questions about places you visited.
- Replies to reviews you have written.
The available categories and their names can differ between Android and iOS. Turning off one category does not necessarily disable the others.
On Android, notifications that ask questions about places you visited require Timeline. On iPhone or iPad, photo prompts require permission for Google to check for photos; Google says it obtains the location information for this purpose from the photo’s metadata. If you do not want these contribution prompts, disable their individual categories rather than changing the restaurant search location.
Control personalized place recommendations separately
If by “notifications” you mean suggested restaurants or places that Maps thinks you might like, those recommendations are not simply the same as push-notification categories. Google describes recommendation controls under Search Services Personalised Recommendations and related account settings.
Signals that can be involved include:
- Search services history, which can influence personalization from searches.
- Timeline, which can provide visit-related context when enabled.
- Device information, which can help tailor services to the device and account.
Google is updating and gradually rolling out the Search Services settings interface. As a result, the labels or menu path visible in one account may not match another. Open the Google account or Maps settings that are available to you, look for the labels above, and change only the personalization controls you intend to change. Do not assume that disabling a Maps notification category will remove every recommendation shown inside Search or Maps.
These recommendation controls are account-level choices, so changing them is different from changing the location permission for one phone. A device can deny Maps precise location while an account still has search history or Timeline information available for personalization. Conversely, allowing location for a current search does not by itself turn on every recommendation feature. Review each setting according to the result you want rather than expecting one master switch.
Requirements, costs, and platform differences
No paid subscription, GPS accessory, restaurant guide, or special hardware is needed to change these settings. The controls use the Google Maps app or website, the phone’s built-in location and notification controls, and the Google account settings associated with Maps. Menu names can change with Android manufacturers, Android versions, iOS releases, browser versions, and Google’s gradual settings updates.
The minimum requirement for a current-location search is an available location service plus permission for Maps (or for the browser and the Maps site when using a browser). The minimum requirement for an alert is operating-system notification permission plus the corresponding in-app category. Some alerts have extra prerequisites: visited-place questions on Android require Timeline, while iPhone or iPad photo prompts require permission for Google to check photos and usable location metadata in those photos.

Maps keeps showing restaurants near the wrong place
- Run a query that names the intended area, such as
restaurants in Chelsea, instead of relying on the current map center. - On Android, verify both Settings > Location > Use location and Maps’ App info > Permissions > Location.
- On iPhone or iPad, verify Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and the Google Maps entry.
- Check whether precise location is disabled. A broad location can produce results that are local but farther away.
- If you are using a browser, check both the browser’s device permission and the Google site’s permission.
After changing a permission, run the search again and inspect the addresses rather than judging only by the map’s starting view. If you are planning for another city, keep the destination in the query so the intended area remains explicit even when the phone is somewhere else.

Location is off, but local results still appear
This can be expected. Android searches may still use an IP address or other non-device signals. Use a specific area in the query when you want to control the search target, and do not interpret the presence of local results as proof that Maps has current device-location access.
Maps sends too many restaurant-related prompts
- Open Maps’ profile menu and go to Settings > Notifications.
- Identify whether the alerts are photo requests, visited-place questions, review replies, or another category.
- Turn off only the category you do not want.
- On iPhone or iPad, confirm that the system permission in Settings > Notifications > Google Maps reflects your choice. On Android, check the corresponding Maps notification permission in the phone settings if needed.
Do not disable location merely to stop a notification category: search location and alert categories are independent controls.
No notification appears after enabling a category
- Check the operating system’s master notification permission for Maps.
- Confirm that the specific in-app category is enabled.
- Remember that some prompts depend on additional account features. For example, visited-place questions on Android require Timeline.
- On iPhone or iPad, photo prompts depend on permission for Google to check photos and on location metadata being available in those photos.
- Allow for platform differences: a category documented on one operating system may have a different name or availability on the other.
If a setting is missing, it may not be offered for that platform, account, or current version of Maps. Google’s Search Services settings are being rolled out gradually, so use the labels actually displayed in your account instead of assuming another user’s menu path will be identical.

A privacy-conscious setup for restaurant searches
For one-time or travel planning, type the destination into the query and leave device-location access limited. For frequent searches around your current position, allow Maps to use location while the app is in use and keep precise location on when distance matters. Review notification categories independently, enabling only contribution or review alerts that are useful to you.
This arrangement separates three decisions: which area Maps searches, whether Maps can read the device’s position, and which alerts or recommendations your account receives. Changing one does not automatically change the others.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make Google Maps search restaurants in a different neighborhood?
Add the area to the search itself, such as “restaurants in Chelsea” or “Italian restaurants near Union Square.” Include a city, district, landmark, or postal code if the first result set is too broad. This works even when device or browser location access is unavailable.
Why are nearby restaurant results wrong when location is turned on?
Check the phone’s main location switch, Google Maps’ app permission, and the precise-location option. In a browser, check both the browser’s device permission and the Google site’s permission. If you need a guaranteed target, name the neighborhood or city in the query.

No. Restaurant searches generally need location while Maps is being used, not continuous background access. On Android, “Allow only while using the app” is the narrower choice for active searches; select broader access only for a feature that genuinely requires it.

Why do I still see local restaurants after turning off phone location?
Google says Android results can still use signals such as an IP address. Turning off device location blocks the phone’s normal location service but does not remove every regional signal. Type the intended area into the search when you want more predictable targeting.
How do I stop Google Maps from asking for restaurant photos or reviews?
In Maps, open your profile picture or initial, choose Settings, then Notifications, and disable the relevant category, such as photo prompts, visited-place questions, or review replies. On iPhone or iPad, also review Settings > Notifications > Google Maps because the system permission can override in-app choices.
Why is a Google Maps notification category enabled but no alert arrives?
Confirm that the operating system allows Google Maps notifications and that the individual Maps category is on. Some alerts have prerequisites: Android questions about visited places require Timeline, and iPhone or iPad photo prompts require permission for Google to check photos and usable location metadata.
Are restaurant recommendations the same as Maps notifications?
No. Push alerts are controlled through operating-system permission and Maps notification categories. Personalized place suggestions use account-level controls such as Search Services Personalised Recommendations, Search services history, Timeline, and device information. Google is rolling out updates to these settings, so menu labels can differ.
Does changing these settings cost anything?
No paid service or accessory is required. The controls are part of Google Maps, your phone’s built-in location and notification settings, your browser when applicable, and the Google account settings associated with Maps.
The Bottom Line
For a deliberate restaurant area, put the neighborhood or city in the query. For restaurants near your current position, enable the phone’s location service and the appropriate Maps permission, preferably only while the app is in use. Browser searches require permission for both the browser and the Google site.
Manage alerts separately: allow Maps notifications at the operating-system level, then switch individual categories in Google Maps. Photo prompts, visited-place questions, and review replies are different categories, while personalized place recommendations use separate account settings.
