Use a restaurant’s dietary filter to narrow your choices, then set any available allergy request or item modification on the specific dish. For grocery orders, choose a replacement, approval, contact, or refund preference for each item. These app controls communicate your needs; they do not guarantee that a meal or substitute is safe or that a restaurant can fulfill a request.
Choose the right kind of preference
“AI” recommendations and automated discovery can help surface options, but the controls described here are app settings for filtering, communicating requests, and handling replacements—not evidence that an automated system will enforce a dietary requirement.
- Restaurant meal: Use a dietary filter to find possible options, then check the controls for the specific menu item. A filter does not establish that every dish at a restaurant fits your needs.
- Grocery order: Set a replacement preference for each item. Grocery replacements are separate from changes to a restaurant dish.
Options and labels can vary by location, merchant, device, and app version. Current consumer instructions are available for Uber Eats and DoorDash. Current Grubhub consumer navigation could not be verified, so check its live app or support rather than relying on old instructions.

- Open Uber Eats and tap the filter icon below the delivery address.
- Under Dietary Type, choose an available filter, such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or allergy-friendly, then apply it. Uber Eats describes these filters as a way to find merchants with matching options; they do not verify every menu item. Uber Eats: how to add or remove allergy instructions.
- Open a menu item and look for Allergy Requests. Select the applicable allergens, add an optional note if useful, and apply the request to that item.
- Review the item and its allergy request in your cart before checkout. To remove a preset request, reopen the item’s Allergy Requests control and clear or confirm the change. To remove a dietary filter, use Clear All in the filter bar.
Do not put allergy information only in the general Special Instructions field. Uber Eats says those notes may be followed, but it and the merchant are not responsible for carrying them out when used for allergy instructions. If the dedicated Allergy Requests control is unavailable or you need to discuss ingredients or cross-contact, contact the restaurant directly.

DoorDash: add a restaurant item request
- Select a menu item and open its Preferences area.
- Enter the request in Special Instructions. DoorDash gives examples such as sauce on the side or no tomatoes. Where available, prefer explicit menu modifiers or selectable dietary, intolerance, or allergy options over a general note.
- Review the selected options and note before adding the item to your order.
A restaurant may be unable to fulfill a request, and changes such as adding ingredients may cost extra. Modifier and dietary-option availability differs by restaurant. See DoorDash: how can I customize my order? and DoorDash’s food-allergy ordering guidance.
Set grocery replacement preferences
When a grocery item is unavailable, the replacement workflow determines whether the shopper substitutes it, checks with you, or refunds it. Choose a preference for each item before checkout and confirm it. These settings do not establish that a replacement meets a dietary requirement.

Uber Eats grocery orders
- Replace with a similar item: Let the shopper or merchant select a similar product.
- Require approval: Turn on notifications and respond while the order is being shopped. If you do not respond, the item is refunded.
- Choose replacements yourself: Select up to five replacement options.
- Do not replace: Have the unavailable item refunded.
A shopper or merchant may contact you during shopping. Set or edit the preference for the item before checkout, then confirm it. See Uber Eats: how to select replacements for out-of-stock items.

DoorDash grocery orders
- Similar item: Allow a similar replacement.
- Preselected substitute: Choose the replacement in advance.
- Refund: Do not substitute the unavailable item.
- Contact me: Ask the shopper to check with you. Respond promptly; if you cannot be reached, the shopper may choose a replacement or refund the item.
DoorDash warns that a shopper cannot ensure a substitute meets dietary requirements, including allergies, and advises customers to read product labels. See DoorDash: item replacements.

What to check before placing the order
- For restaurant meals: Check whether the specific item offers a dedicated allergy request, explicit selectable modifiers, or only a free-text note. A restaurant-wide dietary filter is a discovery aid, not a guarantee about a dish.
- For grocery items: Decide whether you want an exact substitute, approval or contact before a replacement, or a refund. Choose a workflow you can monitor if it requires a response.
- For allergies: Treat app requests as communication tools, not safety assurances. Review the order and contact the restaurant directly when ingredient details or cross-contact risk matter.
What about Grubhub?
Current customer-facing steps for changing dietary or substitution preferences in Grubhub could not be verified. Check the current item page and in-app help, or contact Grubhub support. A 2017 Grubhub allergy guide for restaurants is not evidence of how the customer app works today.
