You can customize a Fire tablet’s wallpaper, text size, screen timeout, and accessibility options in Settings, but the available controls and their labels vary by model and Fire OS version. For wallpaper and lock-screen images in particular, follow only the path that matches your tablet; Amazon’s documented examples do not establish one universal method for every Fire model.
Change the wallpaper or lock-screen image
First check the options on your own tablet: open Settings and look for Lock Screen or Display. Fire tablets do not all offer the same wallpaper choices, and the documented routes below are model-specific examples rather than universal instructions.
Fire HD 8: choose a lock-screen scene or photo
An Amazon staff response for a Fire HD 8 describes this route: Settings > Lock Screen > Select a lock screen scene. Swipe through the available scenes and preview one, or tap Your Photo to choose a personal photo. Tap the checkmark to apply it. In that described configuration, scenes rotate daily by default; to stop rotation, select Off next to Rotate Scene Daily. Amazon’s staff response dates from February 24, 2021, so menu names and availability may differ on newer or older models.

For a Fire 7 owner with a photo in Amazon Photos, an Amazon staff response dated December 19, 2024 describes downloading the image through Silk, then opening Settings > Display > Wallpaper and choosing My Photos from the Gallery app. The image needs to be available on the tablet for this workflow. This is a model-specific example; if those labels are absent, use the options shown in your device’s Settings rather than assuming the same personal-photo workflow applies. Make text and interface items larger
Fire tablets have separate controls for system text, interface size, Kindle reading text, and Silk browser text. Changing one does not necessarily affect the others.
System text and interface size
- For system text, open Settings > Display > Font Size and adjust the slider.
- On tablets running Fire OS 8 or later, open Settings > Display > Display Size to make interface items larger or smaller. Amazon notes that some apps may not display properly at larger settings.
Display Size is not documented as a universal feature for older Fire OS versions. Check your software version and the options visible on your tablet. Amazon’s vision accessibility guidance covers this setting.

Text inside Kindle books and Silk
- Kindle app: Open a book, tap the top of the screen to reveal the reading toolbar, tap Aa, then choose a text size.
- Silk browser: Open the Silk menu, then go to Settings > Accessibility > Text Scaling.
These app-specific settings are distinct from the Fire tablet’s system Font Size control. Amazon’s font-size instructions describe all three routes.

Screen sleep controls when the display turns off after inactivity. It does not set or change a lock-screen PIN or password.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Display or Display & Sounds, depending on the tablet.
- Choose Display Sleep or Sleep.
- Select how long the screen should remain on while the tablet is idle.
A shorter timeout can help preserve battery. Press the power button to wake the display after it sleeps. Amazon’s screen-timeout instructions document the menu alternatives.
Use accessibility and vision settings
Open Settings > Accessibility and select the feature you want. Amazon says the accessibility settings overview is supported on Fire OS 5 and later, but individual features can have narrower requirements.

- Screen Magnifier: Magnifies content on screen.
- High Contrast Text: Changes most on-screen text to black or white with an opposite-color border.
- Color Correction: Includes options for deuteranomaly, protanomaly, and tritanomaly.
- Color Inversion: Reverses screen colors.
- VoiceView: Amazon’s screen reader for Fire OS; it is distinct from Android TalkBack.
- Display Size: Changes the size of interface items and is documented for Fire OS 8 tablets.
Color correction and inversion may need to be turned off temporarily for some videos. Compatibility can depend on the model, Fire OS version, and—in the case of Voice Access—device language. Amazon’s documentation, for example, identifies Voice Access as available only on Fire HD 10 (13th Generation) when the device language is English. Child-profile settings are separate from adult-profile parental controls. For a child profile, profile management can include a Display profile on lock screen option under Other Settings > Lock Screen. Amazon also documents a child-profile option for enabling a lock-screen password, with a PIN or password set for that profile. The exact controls may depend on the profile and device. Amazon’s child-profile settings guidance explains these options.

Keep parental controls separate from the lock password
For an adult profile, parental controls can restrict access to the current profile, including Settings. The parental-controls password is not the same as the lock-screen password, so one should not be treated as a substitute for the other. Amazon’s parental-controls instructions distinguish the two.
