Windows 11 does not provide a general “default Print Screen app” picker. Instead, it gives the Print Screen key one built-in choice: open the Windows snipping overlay, or copy the screenshot in the traditional way.
You can change that behavior here:
Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard
Change what the Print Screen key does
- Press Win+I to open Settings.
- Select Accessibility in the left sidebar.
- Choose Keyboard.
- Scroll to On-screen keyboard, access keys, and Print screen.
- Turn Use the Print screen button to open screen snipping On or Off.
Some Windows 11 builds use slightly different wording: Use the Print screen key to open screen capture. It is the same setting.

With the setting off, Alt+Print Screen copies only the active window. You can then paste the result into Paint, Word, an email, or another application with Ctrl+V.
Can you set Print Screen to open ShareX, Snagit, or Lightshot?
Not through the Windows 11 default-app settings. The Accessibility switch controls Windows’ own Print Screen behavior; it is not a general hotkey assignment list.

If you want ShareX, Snagit, Lightshot, or another screenshot program to respond to PrtSc, configure that program’s hotkey option. The application must register and handle the shortcut itself. You may also need to disable its hotkey if you want Windows to handle Print Screen instead.
The commonly suggested route—Settings → Apps → Default apps, followed by choosing an app for Print Screen—is therefore not the normal way to configure this key. Default apps manage file and protocol associations, not arbitrary keyboard shortcuts.
Useful Windows 11 screenshot shortcuts

Laptop keyboards can use a different combination, such as an Fn modifier or function-key mode. Check the key labels and the laptop manufacturer’s instructions if the documented shortcut does nothing.

This is separate from changing the Print Screen shortcut. Current Snipping Tool versions automatically save captures to the Screenshots folder, and the application includes a setting for its save behavior and default folder.

- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Select See More (…).
- Choose Settings.
- Adjust the automatic-save or Screenshots-folder options available on your Windows build.
After taking a snip, the current interface also provides controls such as Save as, Share, Record, and Edit in Clipchamp. Older guides may call these options Mode, Options, or Save Snip; those names refer to an earlier interface.
How to print a screenshot
Save the capture first. Then open the folder containing the image, right-click the file, and select Print.
Some older Snipping Tool instructions show File → Print while the capture is open. If that menu is not present in your version, use the saved image’s right-click Print command instead.

MS-Screenclip://?source=PrintScreenWindows may then report: “This file does not have an app associated with it for performing this action.”
Try restoring the association:
- Open Settings with Win+I.
- Go to Apps → Default apps.
- Search for MS-SCREENCLIP.
- Add or select Snipping Tool for the protocol.
You can also return to Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard, turn the Print Screen snipping switch off, and then turn it on again. That has been reported as a workaround for the broken association.
What to check if changing the toggle has no effect
A screenshot utility is intercepting the key
ShareX, Snagit, Lightshot, keyboard-management tools, and manufacturer utilities can capture PrtSc before Windows processes it. Open the utility’s settings and change or disable its Print Screen hotkey. If necessary, quit the utility temporarily and test the key again.
The keyboard uses an Fn layer
If Print Screen is printed as a secondary function, try the keyboard’s Fn combination. On keyboards without a dedicated key, Microsoft documents Fn+Win+Spacebar, although the exact hardware behavior can vary.

The wrong behavior is being tested
When the Windows toggle is off, pressing PrtSc normally does not open a visible editor. It copies the image silently to the clipboard. Open Paint and press Ctrl+V to verify that the capture worked.

If the Settings switch is unavailable or does not persist, a Microsoft Q&A answer reports this current-user registry command. Run it from an elevated Command Prompt:
reg add "HKCUControl PanelKeyboard" /v PrintScreenKeyForSnippingEnabled /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /fRestart the PC afterward. This sets the value to 0, disabling the Windows Print Screen-to-snipping behavior.

This is a Microsoft Q&A workaround, not the standard procedure documented on Microsoft’s Windows support page. Use the Settings toggle first, and avoid changing the registry if you are not comfortable reverting a configuration value.

Does this work on every Windows 11 edition?
The documented keyboard behavior applies to Windows 11 generally; it is not limited to Home, Pro, Enterprise, or another specific edition. The exact label can vary by Windows build, particularly the words button versus key and screen snipping versus screen capture.
FAQ
How do I change the default Print Screen app in Windows 11?
Windows 11 does not offer a general app picker for the Print Screen key. Go to Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard and change Use the Print screen button to open screen snipping. For ShareX, Snagit, or another third-party app, configure that app’s own screenshot hotkey.
How do I stop Print Screen from opening Snipping Tool?

A third-party screenshot or keyboard utility may be intercepting the key. Change or disable its PrtSc hotkey, then test the Windows setting again.
Where are Windows 11 screenshots saved?
Win+PrtScn saves screenshots to Pictures → Screenshots on supported hardware. Current Snipping Tool captures are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder, and its See More (…) → Settings menu provides save-related options.
What should I do if Windows says MS-SCREENCLIP has no associated app?

Bottom line: Use Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard to switch the standalone Print Screen key between the Snipping Tool overlay and traditional clipboard copying. Windows 11 does not use that setting to assign PrtSc to an arbitrary third-party app; configure ShareX, Snagit, Lightshot, or similar software through its own hotkey settings.
