To change where sound plays in Windows 11, select the speaker icon on the taskbar, select the arrow beside the volume slider, and choose an output device. You can also open Settings > System > Sound and select a device under Output; selecting it there also sets it as the default device.

Change the audio output from Quick Settings

Use this method to quickly switch audio to a connected speaker, headset, monitor, or other output device.

  1. Select the speaker icon on the right side of the taskbar.
  2. Select the arrow beside the volume slider. Its tooltip is Select a sound output.
  3. Select the device you want to use.

Windows routes audio to the selected device. If the device is missing or silent, use the checks below.

Change the output device in Settings

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under Output, select the device you want to use.

Selecting a device under Output also sets it as the default playback device.

Use the classic playback-device controls

For traditional playback-device controls, open Settings > System > Sound > More sound settings, then select the Playback tab. Select the desired device and use the available controls to set it as the default playback device.

What you want to do Windows 11 path
Quickly switch audio Taskbar speaker icon > arrow beside volume slider > select device
Select the output and set it as default Settings > System > Sound > Output
Use classic playback controls Settings > System > Sound > More sound settings > Playback

When an output device is missing

If Windows reports No audio output device is installed or your device does not appear under Output, check whether it is disabled or undetected.

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
  3. Right-click the audio device. If Enable device is available, select it.
  4. If the device is not listed, select View > Show hidden devices, then Action > Scan for hardware changes.

If the driver is missing or incompatible, install the appropriate audio driver from your computer or sound-card manufacturer, then restart the PC.

If the selected device has no sound

  1. Open Settings > System > Sound and confirm the intended device is selected under Output.
  2. Raise the volume and confirm that audio is not muted.
  3. If needed, open More sound settings > Playback and set the device as the default playback device.
  4. On the selected output device’s Settings page, turn Audio enhancements off as a troubleshooting step.

For general diagnosis, run the automated audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app. You may also find it under Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Audio > Run.

Bluetooth headphones connected but silent

Open Settings > System > Sound and confirm the Bluetooth headphones are selected under Output. If that does not resolve the issue, use the Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app.

How do I set headphones as the default output?

Open Settings > System > Sound and select the headphones under Output. You can also use More sound settings > Playback to set the default playback device.

What should I do if my audio device does not appear?

Check Device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers. Enable the device if that option appears; if it is missing, show hidden devices and scan for hardware changes. If necessary, get the appropriate driver from your computer or sound-card manufacturer.

Why are my Bluetooth headphones connected but not playing sound?

They may not be selected as the output device. Choose them under Settings > System > Sound > Output; if the issue continues, run the Bluetooth troubleshooter in Get Help.

For a quick switch, use the taskbar speaker control. For default playback settings or troubleshooting a missing or silent device, use Settings > System > Sound and the classic Playback controls or Get Help troubleshooter as needed.
