Microsoft calls its Copilot-generated “podcast” an audio overview. There is no documented sensitivity-label control in the Copilot Notebook audio player. To change the label, save the overview to OneDrive, locate the resulting audio file, and use the file’s Microsoft 365 label controls—normally the Details pane in OneDrive or SharePoint.
The exact labels you can choose, and whether you can apply a particular label, depend on your organization’s Microsoft Purview configuration, the storage location, the file type, encryption, and your permissions. The steps below separate Copilot Notebook audio overviews from the different audio-overview workflow that starts with a file in OneDrive.
First identify which Copilot audio experience you used
Microsoft documents two related features that are easy to confuse. Both create conversational audio, but they do not necessarily expose the same save locations or controls.

If you are unsure which route you used, search OneDrive for the generated audio and inspect its location and file type. A file in Recordings points to the separately documented OneDrive flow. An audio file saved from a notebook may appear in another OneDrive location, depending on the action and tenant configuration.

Change the label on a Copilot Notebook audio overview
1. Confirm that the overview has been saved as a file
Open the Copilot Notebook in the Microsoft Copilot app or OneNote and check whether you used Save to OneDrive for the audio overview. An overview that exists only in the notebook is not the same as a separately stored OneDrive file. The documented Notebook feature lets you generate, play, save and delete the audio; it does not document a sensitivity-label picker in the player.
If you have not saved it, save the overview first. Wait for the save operation to finish before attempting to label the file. If the save action is unavailable, check that the notebook contains at least one supported reference file, such as a Word document or OneNote page, and that your account can write to the connected OneDrive location.
2. Locate the saved audio in OneDrive
- Open OneDrive using the account and work or school tenant that created the overview.
- Browse the location used by the save action, or search for the audio file by its generated name or file type.
- Select the audio file once so that its file information is available. Do not open only the audio player; the label command belongs to the file-management view.
OneDrive and SharePoint interfaces change by client and rollout. You may see an information icon, an Details command, or a right-side information panel. Use the option that opens the selected file’s metadata and permissions rather than the command that only plays the audio.

With the file selected, open Details or the equivalent information pane. For supported files in OneDrive or SharePoint, Microsoft documents manual sensitivity-label changes from this file-details context. The controls shown can differ according to the service, browser or desktop client, policy, and file type.
Look for a field named Sensitivity, Sensitivity label, or a label icon. If the pane shows a label but no edit command, your organization may have made the label read-only in that scenario, or the current client may not support changing it.

4. Select an allowed label
Open the label menu and choose the classification that matches the audio’s contents and intended audience. Only labels published to your account and permitted for that location will appear. A label can also apply encryption, access restrictions, watermarks, or other protection settings, so choosing a label is a security decision rather than a cosmetic rename.
Follow any justification prompt required by your organization. Some policies require a reason when you lower a classification or replace an inherited label. Do not attempt to work around a missing label by downloading, renaming, or copying the file to another account; those actions do not grant permission to apply a restricted label.

5. Apply the change and verify it on the file
- Confirm the selected label and submit the change using the pane’s Save, Apply, or equivalent command.
- Wait for the file metadata to refresh. Large files, synchronization delays, or service-side policy evaluation can make the new value take a moment to appear.
- Close and reopen the Details pane, then verify the label shown for the audio file itself.
- If the file is synchronized to a desktop folder, allow synchronization to complete before assuming that local metadata is current.
Verify the saved audio rather than relying on the label shown for the notebook or one of its source documents. Microsoft’s documentation does not establish that changing a source notebook label automatically changes the label on an audio file that was already saved as a separate artifact.
Use the separate OneDrive audio-overview workflow correctly
Microsoft also documents audio overviews generated from files in OneDrive. In that flow, the saved result is an MP3 in the Recordings folder when the Save to OneDrive option is used. The option is documented for non-encrypted source files.
Find the MP3
- Open the OneDrive account that contains the source file.
- Open the Recordings folder.
- Identify the MP3 created for the audio overview by its name and creation time.
If no MP3 appears, confirm that you used the OneDrive audio-overview feature rather than a Notebook overview, that the source was not encrypted, and that the save operation completed. A missing file does not prove that a label was applied or inherited.

Relabel the MP3
- Select the MP3 in OneDrive.
- Open its Details pane or equivalent file-information view.
- Use the available sensitivity-label control, choose an allowed label, and complete any required justification.
- Reopen the pane and verify the label on the MP3.
The fact that an MP3 is in Recordings does not guarantee that every tenant exposes the same label commands. File-label support depends on the storage service, client, policy, and permissions.
Why the label option is missing or blocked
The audio is still only in the notebook
The Notebook audio-overview documentation describes an audio player and a Save to OneDrive action, not an in-player sensitivity-label editor. Save the overview as a file and work from the file’s OneDrive or SharePoint metadata. If your organization does not permit saving the audio, contact the Microsoft 365 administrator rather than trying to extract it through an unsupported method.
Your account cannot change labels
Label changes are governed by the organization’s label policy. An administrator may publish a label to some users but not others, limit which labels can be used in a given location, require a business justification, or prevent users from removing a label. Ask your Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Purview administrator whether your account has permission to change labels on files in that OneDrive or SharePoint location.
Mandatory labeling prevents removal
Microsoft states that mandatory labeling can prevent a user from removing a label. That does not necessarily prevent changing an existing label: a user may still be able to replace it with another label allowed by policy. If the menu offers replacement labels but no blank or “remove” choice, that behavior is consistent with mandatory labeling.
The current label applies encryption
Sensitivity labels can apply encryption and protection settings. Encrypted content is subject to rights checks, and Microsoft documents rights such as VIEW and EXTRACT as relevant when Copilot needs to use protected source data. A user also needs the appropriate rights to change a label that applies encryption. If the file opens but the label cannot be changed, the protection settings—not the audio format alone—may be the reason.

The file is in an unsupported view or client
Try the OneDrive or SharePoint web file view when a desktop player or synchronized folder does not show label controls. Select the file and open its information pane. If the web view also lacks the control, record the file location, current label, account, and error message for your administrator. Do not infer support from the fact that another Office file in the same folder can be relabeled; support can vary by file type and service scenario.
The label appears unchanged after saving
- Refresh the file list and reopen Details.
- Check that you changed the label on the audio file, not on a source Word document, OneNote page, or notebook.
- Allow time for OneDrive synchronization and policy evaluation.
- Check whether a policy automatically reapplied a higher-priority or mandatory label.
- Ask an administrator to verify the file’s label and audit or policy status if the value continues to revert.
What label inheritance does—and does not—tell you
Microsoft documents label inheritance for supported Copilot content-creation workflows. When content is created from labeled source files, the highest-priority label among those sources can be inherited. Microsoft also says a user may override or replace an inherited label when the configured policy permits it.
That general inheritance guidance does not establish that an audio overview remaining inside a Copilot Notebook has an editable sensitivity label. Nor does it establish that a label on a notebook source will be copied to an audio file saved later. Treat the saved audio as its own artifact and inspect its label directly.
Inheritance also does not override encryption rights. If a source file is protected and your account lacks the rights Copilot needs, the overview may fail to generate or may not be savable through the documented flow. If generation succeeds but relabeling is blocked, the file’s current protection and your label permissions still control the result.

How to choose the replacement label responsibly
Match the audio to its actual contents
An audio overview can summarize every reference in a notebook or source file, including material that is more sensitive than the file name suggests. Before selecting a less restrictive label, consider whether the recording contains personal data, confidential business information, regulated material, or details that should remain limited to the original audience.

Keep protection requirements intact
If the existing label encrypts the file or limits forwarding, changing it can alter who can open, copy, print, or share the audio. Choose a label whose protection settings match the approved audience. If you are unsure which label is appropriate, ask the data owner or your organization’s information-protection team.
Do not treat relabeling as a way to bypass policy
A label change should follow the published policy and any required approval. Downloading the MP3, copying it into an unsanctioned location, or converting it to another format does not make a prohibited label change legitimate. Those actions can also create additional copies that need their own classification.
Requirements and supported languages
A Copilot Notebook audio overview requires at least one reference file, such as a Word document or OneNote page. Microsoft lists support for English, Spanish, Japanese, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, and Chinese. Language availability does not determine whether a sensitivity label can be changed; labeling remains controlled by the Microsoft 365 service, tenant policy, file support, and user permissions.
For the separately documented OneDrive flow, the source-file encryption condition matters: Microsoft identifies the Save to OneDrive option for non-encrypted source files. If your source is encrypted, the available save actions and Copilot’s ability to use the content can differ.
When to involve an administrator
Contact your Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Purview administrator when any of these conditions applies:
- The desired label is not published to your account.
- The Details pane shows a label but no edit control.
- The label applies encryption and you need to change protected access.
- Mandatory labeling blocks removal or the policy repeatedly restores another label.
- The audio was created from encrypted material and Copilot cannot access or save it.
- The file is in a shared library or site where you do not have the required permissions.
- You need confirmation that the final MP3’s label, not merely the source document’s label, meets your organization’s policy.
Provide the administrator with the OneDrive or SharePoint path, file name, current label, intended replacement label, and any message shown in the Details pane. That information lets the administrator distinguish a missing policy assignment from a client or storage limitation.
