Microsoft Family has no single “convert to adult” button. If the account’s birth date is wrong, correct it through the Microsoft account that gave consent. If the person is already an adult and wants fewer controls, they can stay in the family group while an organizer changes reporting settings, or leave the group—with possible loss of shared benefits.
First decide what needs to change
Microsoft uses the birth date on the account and the applicable country or region’s age rules to determine whether parental consent is required. Correct an inaccurate birth date; do not change a correct one just to bypass age restrictions. If the birth date is accurate and the person simply wants privacy or different Family Safety settings, adjust the settings or consider leaving the group instead.

Correct an inaccurate birth date
For a child account, the adult Microsoft account that originally granted consent should manage the child’s personal information. Microsoft’s interface instruction is to choose “Edit this child’s personal info.”

- Sign in to the adult Microsoft account that gave consent, then open Microsoft’s birth-date help page.
- Follow the link to manage child accounts and select the child account.
- Choose “Edit this child’s personal info,” update the birth date to the correct one, and save.
If the child account does not appear, another adult in the family may hold the consent. If there is no edit option, Microsoft says the account may no longer be classified as a child or the person may already be above the statutory age for their region. Check the account profile and follow Microsoft’s consent steps if the profile is not editable or requests consent.

Age thresholds depend on location
In Microsoft’s described consent flow, the adult account holder must generally be at least 18; the stated exception for Canada is 19. The statutory age varies by country or region. Check Microsoft’s parental consent guidance for the relevant location rather than applying one threshold worldwide.
Stop activity reporting while staying in the family group
An adult can remain a family member; Microsoft says family members can be any age. If the goal is to stop activity reports, the organizer can open the person’s settings and turn off Activity reporting on each of the four device-platform tabs. Other organizer-managed controls, such as content filters or screen time, may still apply to an adult member.

Microsoft’s current guidance distinguishes adult members from organizers and adults outside a family group. An organizer must change an adult member’s safety configurations. If settings remain enforced on a device after the account is outside a family group, use Microsoft’s Family Safety troubleshooting guidance and its instructions for settings enforced on adults.

If the person wants to end family-group participation, they can sign in to the Microsoft Family group and select “Leave family group” if that option is available. An organizer can remove another member. When the account is still treated as a child account, the organizer may need to remove consent first; only the adult who granted consent can remove it. Removing consent and removing someone from the family group are separate steps.

Leaving or removal does not delete the Microsoft account. However, the person can lose Family Safety features and access to products, services, or digital purchases shared by other members. That can include a Microsoft 365 Family subscription. Review what is shared before leaving or removing the account.

Start by checking the account profile and whether its birth date is accurate. If it is wrong and editable, correct and save it. If the profile is not editable or asks for consent, follow Microsoft’s consent instructions; where consent has already been granted, the adult who granted it must use the child-account management flow. Microsoft’s help page covers the case described as “I’m an adult, but Microsoft thinks I’m a child.”
