To pixelate part of a picture in Photoshop, select the area you want to hide, then choose Filter > Pixelate > Mosaic and adjust the cell size. For an editable workflow, convert the layer to a Smart Object first so Mosaic is applied as a Smart Filter. Mosaic replaces image detail with square blocks of color; it is a visual obscuring effect, not a verified privacy guarantee. Adobe’s pixelation guide documents the filter and selective workflow.
How to pixelate part of a picture in Photoshop
- Open the image and select the layer you want to edit in the Layers panel. Keep the original intact by duplicating the layer or converting the working layer to a Smart Object.
- Select the area to censor. Use the Marquee tool for a rectangular region or a Lasso tool for a freeform area, such as a face, logo, address, or license plate.
- Choose Filter > Pixelate > Mosaic.
- Adjust the cell-size control until the square blocks obscure the detail you want to hide, then apply the filter.
- Inspect the result at the image’s intended delivery size. If identifying detail is still visible near an edge, expand the selection or refine the mask.
Adobe describes Mosaic as redrawing pixels into square blocks of color. The result is a pixelated mosaic, rather than a soft blur. See Adobe’s guide to pixelating an image for its documented selective workflow.
How to censor only part of an image
Select the region directly
For one face or object, select that region with the Marquee or Lasso tool before applying Mosaic. The filter affects the selected area, letting the rest of the image remain unchanged.

If the subject should stay clear while the surrounding background is pixelated, choose Select > Subject, then Select > Inverse. Apply Mosaic to the inverted selection. The result depends on how accurately Photoshop detects the subject, so check the selection edges before applying the effect. Adobe documents this approach in its pixelation guide.

Refine coverage with a mask
A layer mask gives you a revisable way to control which parts of a layer show through. Select an area, add a mask, then edit the mask in the Layers panel to reveal or hide coverage as needed. Adobe explains mask creation and editing in Add and edit layer masks in Photoshop.
Use masks for detected objects
When an image contains multiple objects Photoshop detects, choose Layer > Mask All Objects to generate masks for them. You can then choose a masked object and apply a filter to it. See Adobe’s instructions for creating layer masks for all detected objects.

Which Photoshop mosaic method should you use?

For a Smart Filter workflow, convert the working layer to a Smart Object before applying Mosaic. This keeps the filter editable, so you can revisit its settings rather than committing the effect directly to the pixels. Keep a layered working file, then export a flattened copy for delivery.

Mosaic or blur: which should you use?
Mosaic creates obvious square blocks of color. If you prefer a softer appearance, select the area and choose a suitable effect from Filter > Blur instead. Adobe presents blur as an alternative for obscuring part of an image in its pixelation guide.

Does a Photoshop mosaic securely hide private information?
Adobe’s instructions explain how to create and control the visual effect, but do not establish a universally safe cell size, quantify privacy protection, or test whether obscured details can be recovered. Treat Mosaic as visual obscuring, not as a proven security method. Check the exported file at its actual delivery size, including the edges of the censored region, before sharing it.
