You do not need to finish every Grand Theft Auto game before GTA 6. Rockstar’s published synopsis introduces Jason and Lucia in Leonida without making earlier campaigns a prerequisite. For the most relevant refresher, play GTA V Story Mode; add GTA IV and its Episodes for more modern-era backstory, or the classic trilogy if you want series history.

Rockstar currently lists GTA 6 for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its story centers on Jason and Lucia after an easy score goes wrong. Check Rockstar’s official GTA 6 page for any release-date or platform changes.

Do you need to play the older GTA games before GTA 6?

No. Rockstar’s public GTA 6 synopsis presents a new story about Jason and Lucia and a criminal conspiracy across Leonida; it does not say that players must know earlier protagonists or complete earlier campaigns. The safest approach is to treat older games as optional context, not required homework.

Shared city names, brands, or tone are not by themselves proof that every Grand Theft Auto plot is one continuous story. If your goal is to be ready for GTA 6, prioritize the game most directly relevant to the numbered series: GTA V.

Which games should you play to catch up?

Choose a route based on how much background you want and which games are available on your platform. The recommendations below are editorial guidance based on story relevance and the contents Rockstar describes, not a list of official GTA 6 requirements.

Route What to play Best for Availability note
Short refresher GTA V Story Mode A focused recap of the previous numbered game and its central trio: Franklin, Michael, and Trevor. Rockstar Store lists GTA V with Story Mode and GTA Online; check that the edition you choose includes Story Mode. Rockstar Store: GTA V
Expanded modern-era route GTA IV, The Lost and Damned, The Ballad of Gay Tony, then GTA V More time in Liberty City and three interwoven stories featuring Niko, Johnny, and Luis. Rockstar Store describes the Complete Edition as containing GTA IV and both Episodes. Its surfaced listing is for PC; formats and availability vary by platform and market. Rockstar Store: GTA IV: The Complete Edition
Classic-era sampler GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas in The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition Series history, including Vice City’s 1980s setting and San Andreas’s early-1990s setting. Rockstar confirms the bundle includes all three games. Its PC listing has specific launcher, account, activation, and periodic entitlement-verification requirements; console editions have different requirements. Rockstar Store: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition
Optional online epilogue GTA Online, including The Contract if you want Franklin’s later appearance Players curious about story material set after GTA V’s campaign. Rockstar calls GTA Online an evolving online world, so its content is separate from a concise single-player catch-up and can change. Rockstar Newswire: The Contract

Start with GTA V Story Mode for the most relevant refresher

GTA V is the clearest single-game choice if you want one campaign before GTA 6. Rockstar’s description follows Franklin, a young street hustler; Michael, a retired bank robber; and Trevor, a volatile criminal, as they get pulled into dangerous heists and the criminal underworld. That makes the campaign the most direct refresher on the previous numbered entry—not a confirmed prerequisite for understanding GTA 6.

When choosing a product, distinguish GTA V Story Mode from GTA Online. Rockstar’s store lists the two together on its GTA V page and also identifies Online as a separately available standalone product, with a Story Mode upgrade available in-game. Verify the contents of the exact platform edition before buying.

Add GTA IV and its Episodes for more Liberty City stories

If you want a longer modern-era route, play GTA IV followed by The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, then move on to GTA V. Rockstar’s Complete Edition listing presents these as three interwoven Liberty City stories, following Niko Bellic, Johnny Klebitz, and Luis Lopez.

This route adds character and setting context beyond GTA V, but Rockstar’s GTA 6 page does not say it is necessary. The cited Complete Edition store listing is for PC; do not assume the same packaged edition is sold for every current console or in every market.

Choose the trilogy for classic series context, not as a bridge you must cross

The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition bundles GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. Rockstar’s descriptions place Vice City in the 1980s and San Andreas in the early 1990s. These games can help you explore the series’ earlier settings and style, but the available Rockstar material does not establish them as required background for GTA 6.

For the PC edition, Rockstar’s store listing specifies the Rockstar Games Launcher, a social account, internet access for activation, and periodic entitlement verification. Those requirements are specific to the listed PC version; check the requirements for the platform edition you intend to use.

Where GTA Online fits

GTA Online is not needed for a concise campaign recap. It does include story content: Rockstar described The Contract as bringing GTA V’s story into present-day Online through Franklin. Consider it an optional epilogue if you already play Online or want that additional thread, rather than a substitute for or requirement alongside GTA V Story Mode.

A simple decision guide

  • Want one game? Play GTA V Story Mode.
  • Want a deeper modern-era route? Play GTA IV, both Episodes, then GTA V.
  • Want to explore earlier GTA settings? Choose the Trilogy as optional series history.
  • Already play GTA Online? Add The Contract if you want Franklin’s later story appearance.

There is no reliable completion-time comparison established here, so choose based on your interest and available time rather than an assumed number of hours. Platform and edition availability can differ; confirm that the version you select contains the campaign you intend to play.
