You can start with Critical Role Campaign 4, Episode 1—no earlier campaign is required. Campaign 4 begins a new story in Aramán rather than Exandria, the setting of the earlier campaigns. Watch the episodes in order, and use the official campaign page’s recaps and lore resources when you need a refresher.
Do you need to watch earlier Critical Role campaigns first?
No. Critical Role presents Campaign 4 as a new story intended to welcome first-time viewers. Its setting is Aramán, separate from the Exandria setting used in the earlier campaigns, so you do not need to catch up on those campaigns before starting.
The official story description centers on Thjazi Fang and people from his life who come together after he is marked for execution. You can follow that story from the beginning without prior campaign knowledge. See Critical Role’s Campaign 4 page.

Start at Campaign 4, Episode 1, then follow the official episode index in order. The Campaign 4 page is the best starting point: it brings together episode links, recaps, lore resources, character information, and extra videos.
#1 Best Overall
- First major D&D adventure book within Critical Role’s world of Exandria, taking players from levels 3–12
- Multi-continental story that spans the scarred Wastes of Xhorhas, introduces the continent of Marquet, and eventually plunges players into the Netherdeep—a terrifying cross between the Far Realm and the deep ocean
- Bursting with lore and all new art depicting Exandria
- Includes a poster map of Ank’Harel
- Adds magic items, creatures, and introduces rival NPCs
Full episodes are the way to experience the campaign itself. Recaps and lore pages can help you recall plot points or look up details, but Critical Role does not describe them as a complete abridged replacement for watching every episode.

Do you need to buy anything to follow the campaign?
No purchase is required to watch or catch up. Campaign Four uses the 2024 rules, so the Dungeons & Dragons 2024 Player’s Handbook is an optional reference if you want to look more closely at the mechanics—not a prerequisite for following the story. Critical Role’s Campaign Four introduction provides more about the campaign and its rules.
