Short answer: Start with the jacket’s care label, wash the shell when it is dirty or no longer comfortable, and use a small amount of liquid detergent made for technical outerwear. Dry or apply heat only when the label permits it. After the jacket is clean and dry, test whether water beads on the face fabric; apply a compatible DWR treatment only if beading has not returned.
DWR (durable water repellent) keeps water from saturating the outer textile, while the membrane or coated construction provides the waterproof barrier. A jacket can therefore remain waterproof after its face fabric begins to wet out, although comfort and perceived breathability may decline.
DWR and the waterproof membrane do different jobs
The outer face fabric of a rain shell is usually treated with a durable water repellent, or DWR. This finish makes droplets bead and run off instead of soaking into the textile. Beneath that face fabric, a waterproof membrane, coating, or sealed construction blocks liquid water from passing through. Seams may also depend on tape or bonded construction.

When DWR wears off, the face fabric can darken and look saturated during rain. That condition is called wetting out. It can make the jacket feel clammy and reduce the comfort you expect from the garment, but it does not by itself prove that the waterproof barrier has failed. The GORE-TEX FAQ explains that a product can still be waterproof when water repellency is gone, even though the wearer may no longer feel the expected comfort: GORE-TEX FAQs.

Home care can clean contamination and renew surface repellency. It cannot, on the evidence available here, be treated as a repair for a punctured membrane, failed seam tape, delamination, or a torn shell.
Check the jacket before putting it in the washer
Care labels take priority over general advice. Construction, trims, insulation, coatings, and model-specific finishes can change the permitted wash cycle, temperature, detergent, and drying method. Patagonia likewise directs owners to follow the garment label in its waterproof-jacket washing guide.
1. Identify the exact care instructions
- Read the sewn-in label and any model-specific instructions from the maker.
- Look for warnings about machine washing, tumble drying, ironing, dry cleaning, bleach, or special shell constructions.
- Do not assume that a temperature or cycle suitable for one waterproof jacket is safe for another.
2. Remove loose contamination
Brush or wipe off mud, grit, salt, and other loose debris before washing. Dirt, body oils, sunscreen, smoke, and similar contaminants can interfere with water repellency, so cleaning is the first treatment rather than an optional cosmetic step.

3. Prepare closures and pockets
Empty every pocket. Close zippers, hook-and-loop tabs, and other fasteners if the garment instructions call for them. Securing loose closures helps prevent snagging and keeps the shell’s shape during the cycle; the label remains the authority if it specifies a different preparation.

How to wash a waterproof outdoor jacket
Use the following sequence unless the jacket’s own instructions require another method.
- Choose a suitable cleaner. Use a small amount of liquid detergent intended for technical outerwear. Patagonia recommends a mild, water-based liquid detergent without dyes, whiteners, brighteners, or fragrance. A dedicated technical cleaner is another option when its label says it is suitable for waterproof shells.
- Avoid incompatible additives. General GORE-TEX care guidance says to avoid powder detergent, fabric softener, and chlorine bleach. Do not add stain treatments or other laundry chemicals unless the jacket maker specifically permits them.
- Select the label-approved cycle. GORE-TEX gives warm water at 105°F/40°C as general outerwear guidance, but that figure is not a universal setting. Use the temperature, cycle, and rinse instructions printed for your garment if they differ.
- Wash the shell separately when practical. Keeping a technical jacket away from heavily soiled laundry reduces the chance that oils, lint, or residue will be redeposited. If the label permits washing with other items, follow that instruction instead.
- Run an additional rinse when residue is a concern. Detergent left in the fabric can affect hand feel and repellency. Use an extra rinse only if the care label and machine instructions allow it.
- Inspect after the cycle. Check the face fabric, cuffs, hood, zippers, and seam areas for remaining dirt or damage before drying. If contamination remains, repeat the approved cleaning process rather than adding more aggressive chemicals.
Nikwax describes Tech Wash as a cleaner for waterproof, windproof, and fleece clothing and equipment. It performs the cleaning job; it is not itself a DWR reproofing treatment.
Dry the jacket and reactivate DWR only when allowed
Drying is part of the care process, but the correct method depends on the garment. Some manufacturers allow tumble drying or controlled ironing after washing because movement and permitted heat can help restore a DWR finish. GORE-TEX includes those methods in its general instructions. That does not authorize heat on every shell.
- Read the drying symbols and written instructions again after washing.
- If air drying is specified, hang or lay the jacket as directed, away from direct heat sources that could damage coatings, trims, or adhesives.
- If tumble drying is allowed, use only the permitted temperature and duration. Stop if the jacket becomes unusually hot or shows signs of damage.
- If ironing is allowed, follow the label’s temperature and barrier instructions exactly; never place a hot iron directly on a shell that forbids ironing.
Do not apply a generic heat treatment to a special construction. The most important example is GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY, described below, which specifically prohibits tumble drying and ironing.

Test the clean, dry shell before reproofing
Once the jacket is completely clean and dry, perform a simple exterior test. Sprinkle or drip a small amount of water onto several areas of the face fabric, including the shoulders, hood, sleeves, and back. Observe whether droplets bead and roll away or spread into a dark, wet-looking patch.
If water beads again
The cleaning and permitted drying process has restored the surface behavior sufficiently for the guidance cited here. There is no need to add a DWR product immediately. Continue using the jacket and repeat the test when it becomes dirty, develops an odor, or begins wetting out again.
If water still spreads into the fabric
Apply a compatible DWR treatment according to that product’s instructions. Patagonia’s guide states: “If water still doesn’t bead up on your shell after a wash and dry, then it’s time to re-proof it.” The treatment must be suitable for the jacket’s fabric and construction; do not assume that a product made for one shell works with every waterproof garment.
Choose between spray-on and wash-in DWR treatments
Manufacturers describe two common application formats. The practical differences are where the treatment is deposited and how much control you have over coverage.

| Format | Where it is applied | What the instructions require | Best decision point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spray-on | Directly onto the clean outer face fabric | Thorough, even coverage of all required panels; follow drying or activation directions on the product label | Useful when you want to target the exterior and can methodically cover every area |
| Wash-in | Distributed through the wash bath and into the garment | Use the stated dose, cycle, and compatibility instructions; treat the entire item as directed | Convenient when treating a whole garment in one wash process |
Patagonia notes that wash-in treatment can be easier because it treats the entire item, while spray-on treatment can be equally effective when every area is covered thoroughly. The source does not establish universal differences in breathability, durability, environmental impact, or performance among all products, so those outcomes should not be assumed.
How to apply a spray-on treatment
- Confirm that the shell is clean, compatible with the product, and still damp or dry as the product directions specify.
- Lay or hang the jacket so all outer panels are accessible.
- Apply an even coat to the face fabric, paying attention to shoulders, upper sleeves, hood, and other high-exposure areas.
- Wipe or redistribute excess only if the product instructions call for it.
- Dry or heat-activate exactly as directed and permitted by the jacket label.
How to apply a wash-in treatment
- Verify that the product is intended for the jacket’s fabric and construction.
- Use the stated amount and washing procedure; more product is not automatically better.
- Run the specified cycle and rinse steps without adding ordinary fabric softener or bleach.
- Dry the jacket using the garment label and the reproofing product’s compatible instructions.
Keep cleaner and reproofing treatment separate
A technical wash removes oils, dirt, and residue. A DWR product adds or renews water-repellent chemistry after cleaning has failed to restore beading. Treating those jobs as interchangeable leads to unnecessary product use or an incomplete repair.
Nikwax separates these functions: its garment-care guidance identifies cleaning as one stage, while TX.Direct is identified for re-waterproofing when cleaning does not revive beading. Follow the labels for both products and prioritize the jacket maker’s compatibility instructions.
Special exception: GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY
GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY garments have no textile outer layer. The brand’s outerwear care instructions say these garments do not need DWR treatment. The listed care is delicate machine washing at 105°F/40°C, with no dry cleaning, tumble drying, ironing, bleaching, or DWR treatment.

| Symptom | Likely interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The face fabric darkens in rain, but the inside stays dry | DWR may be depleted while the waterproof barrier is still functioning | Wash with suitable liquid detergent, dry as permitted, then test beading and reproof only if needed |
| Water no longer beads after washing, drying, and a second test | Surface repellency has not returned | Use a compatible spray-on or wash-in DWR product according to its instructions |
| The jacket smells or feels oily | Body oils, smoke, sunscreen, or other contaminants may remain | Clean again with the approved detergent and rinse method; do not compensate with extra DWR |
| The inside becomes wet during ordinary rain | Possible membrane, seam-tape, coating, zipper, or physical damage; the cause cannot be diagnosed from wetting alone | Inspect for visible damage and consult the maker’s repair guidance or a qualified repair service |
| The shell has a special care warning | General washing or heat advice may be unsafe | Follow the model-specific instruction and disregard generic settings that conflict with it |
| Beading varies across panels | Coverage, abrasion, contamination, or wear may differ by area | Clean first, then apply a treatment with complete coverage if the product and garment labels allow it |
When should you wash or reproof?
No universal number of washes, seasons, or months is established in the cited manufacturer guidance. Use condition-based triggers instead:
- Wash when the jacket is visibly dirty.
- Wash when it develops an odor or feels contaminated by oils, sunscreen, smoke, or grime.
- Wash when the face fabric begins wetting out, then test after drying.
- Reproof only when cleaning and permitted drying do not restore beading.
GORE-TEX advises washing as often as needed to remove impurities. That is deliberately different from promising a fixed annual schedule or a guaranteed lifespan extension.

DWR treatment acts on the exterior textile. It does not patch a hole, recreate missing seam tape, reverse delamination, or repair a failed zipper. A jacket that leaks through one damaged area may need a manufacturer repair rather than another bottle of water repellent.
Document the problem before sending the jacket for service: note where water enters, photograph visible tears or peeling layers, and identify the exact model from its label. Patagonia publishes general product care and repair instructions; other manufacturers may provide different procedures or warranty routes.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes that shorten a shell’s useful life
- Using powder detergent by default: General GORE-TEX guidance calls for a small amount of liquid detergent instead and excludes powder.
- Adding fabric softener or chlorine bleach: These are specifically excluded in the cited GORE-TEX outerwear instructions.
- Reproofing a dirty jacket: Contaminants can interfere with repellency, so wash first.
- Applying heat without checking the label: Heat can help some garments and damage others, including SHAKEDRY.
- Assuming wetting out equals a failed membrane: A saturated face fabric and an interior leak are different observations.
- Spraying only the obvious panels: Spray-on products depend on thorough coverage; missed shoulders, hood, or sleeves can leave uneven protection.
- Using a cleaner as if it were a reproofer: Technical washes remove contamination; they do not automatically add a new DWR finish.
- Expecting a fixed service interval: Condition-based care is supported; a universal timetable is not.
A practical decision flow
- Read the label. Record the permitted detergent, water temperature, cycle, and drying method, including any special-construction warning.
- Inspect and clean. Remove loose dirt, secure closures as directed, and wash with a small amount of compatible liquid detergent.
- Dry within the rules. Use air drying or permitted tumble/iron settings only.
- Run the bead test. If droplets bead, stop. If they spread, continue.
- Select a compatible DWR format. Choose spray-on or wash-in based on the garment and product instructions, then apply complete coverage.
- Escalate real leaks. If the inside wets through or damage is visible, seek maker-specific repair guidance instead of repeating surface treatments.
