Identify the material before you clean the shoe: genuine suede is leather, while faux suede is synthetic and can differ from one shoe to another. For either type, start with the shoe maker’s care instructions, clean gently, and let the shoe air-dry away from direct heat. Avoid soaking, machine washing, and tumble drying; the wrong method can change suede’s texture or color.
Identify the shoe material before cleaning
Genuine suede is leather finished to create a soft, velvety nap. Vagabond describes it as split leather or the reverse side of leather that has been sanded, and notes that it is sensitive to water and dirt. Faux suede is synthetic, but the name does not identify one uniform material or construction. Miista, for example, describes its faux suede as woven synthetic fabric. That difference matters: a cleaner or brush suitable for one shoe may be unsuitable for another.
Check the shoe’s care label and the maker’s product-care page first. Look for an explicit material description, permitted cleaning method, and warnings about water, brushes, or products. If the label simply says “suede” or “faux suede” and does not explain the finish, do not assume that a product made for another shoe will be safe. When the material or finish remains unclear, ask the maker or a professional cleaner before applying liquid cleaner or protector.

- Faux suede: begin with the maker’s instructions. A soft microfiber cloth and gentle brushing are examples of maker-approved approaches, not a universal protocol for every synthetic shoe.
- Either material: test any permitted product on a hidden area first, and stop if the test changes the color or texture.
Material identification is also a way to avoid unnecessary treatment. A shoe with surface dust may need only a gentle brush or cloth, while a localized mark may call for a compatible eraser or cleaning block. A more extensive stain is not automatically a reason to reach for a stronger cleaner: if the finish is delicate or the product’s suitability is uncertain, ask for help instead.

What to gather before you start
Choose the tool to match the shoe and the mark rather than reaching for a general household cleaner. For ordinary surface dust on genuine suede, a soft suede brush is the basic tool. For a localized mark, a suede eraser or cleaning block may help if the maker permits it. For faux suede, some makers recommend a clean, soft cloth and a clean eraser used gently on a localized stain.
- Soft suede brush: intended for gentle surface cleaning and raising the nap. Some shoe makers warn against metal brushes; Stuart Weitzman specifically cautions against metal suede brushes for its shoes.
- Cleaning block or suede eraser: for localized marks where the shoe’s instructions allow it. Use a clean one and avoid aggressive rubbing.
- Cleaner and cloth: use only a cleaner labeled for the shoe’s material and follow its directions. A damp cloth is not permission to wet the whole shoe.
- Protector spray: use only if both the spray label and the shoe maker’s instructions support the exact material and finish.
Before cleaning, remove loose dust and make sure the shoe is dry enough for the method you plan to use. Work gently and in a small area; brushing or rubbing hard can alter the surface you are trying to restore.
When choosing between tools or methods, consider four things: whether they are compatible with the material, how large or persistent the mark is, how much cleaning the maker permits, and the chance of changing the shoe’s color or texture. A brush is a low-intensity starting point for loose dirt on genuine suede; a block or eraser is a more focused option for a localized mark, if allowed. Liquid cleaner adds moisture, so use it only when the shoe’s instructions and the product directions support that approach. No single brand or product is established as the best choice for every suede shoe.

How to clean genuine suede shoes
For routine care, use a gentle sequence: let dirt dry, remove loose soil with a suede brush, treat a persistent mark only with a compatible tool or cleaner, then let the shoe dry naturally and brush to restore the nap. This follows the general approaches in the care guidance from Vagabond, Dr. Martens, and PUMA; the precise cleaner and tools still depend on the shoe.
- Let damp dirt dry. Do not scrub wet dirt into the nap. If the shoe is wet, follow the wet-shoe guidance below before attempting dry brushing.
- Brush off surface dirt gently. Use a suede-specific brush, working lightly rather than pressing or scraping. Avoid a metal brush unless the shoe maker explicitly permits it.
- Address a stubborn localized mark only if the maker allows it. Use a cleaning block or suede cleaner as directed. Vagabond’s care guidance describes using a block for tougher marks and applying cleaner with a damp cloth. Dr. Martens describes gentle cleaning with its suede cleaner and a damp sponge or cloth.
- Let the shoe air-dry. Keep it away from direct heat. Do not use a tumble dryer or place it near a heat source to speed up drying.
- Brush the dry surface to restore the nap. Use a gentle brush and follow the grain or natural direction of the surface. Dr. Martens recommends brushing with the soft rubber side of a brush after cleaning.
Different makers can specify different tools. PUMA recommends a suede-specific brush, while Dr. Martens describes a soft rubber brush side; Stuart Weitzman advises against metal brushes for its shoes. Follow the instructions for the particular pair instead of treating one brush design as right for every finish. Dr. Martens footwear designer Charlie O’Byrne puts the handling principle simply: “Be gentle with it. Don’t attack it. Brush it like your favourite pet.”
Keep the cleaning limited to what the mark requires. Do not treat a cleaner’s directions as permission to saturate the shoe: Vagabond’s cleaner method uses a damp cloth, while Dr. Martens describes a damp sponge or cloth with its cleaner. Those are specific maker instructions, not a universal recipe for every suede. If a small treatment does not help, avoid repeating it with greater pressure or more liquid. More aggressive handling can introduce the very color or texture change you are trying to prevent.

How to clean faux-suede shoes
Faux suede is a category, not a single standardized fabric, so the shoe maker’s directions take precedence over generic advice. The guidance from Miista and Charles & Keith illustrates methods for their products; it does not establish that every synthetic suede shoe can be treated the same way.
- Read the care instructions for the exact shoe. Confirm whether the maker permits brushing, an eraser, or any moisture. If instructions are missing or unclear, contact the maker before applying a cleaner.
- Remove dust with a soft, clean cloth. Miista recommends a soft microfiber cloth for dust on its faux suede.
- Brush gently if the maker allows it. Miista advises brushing in the natural grain direction. Use light strokes rather than scrubbing against the surface.
- For a localized mark, use an eraser only if permitted. Miista describes a suede eraser for more aggressive staining; Charles & Keith recommends a clean, unused soft pencil eraser used gently, followed by a soft-bristle brush to restore the nap. These are maker-specific recommendations.
- Stop if the surface changes. If the material begins to look shiny, distorted, or different in color, stop rubbing and seek advice from the shoe maker or a cleaner experienced with the material.
Miista warns that machine washing, tumble drying, or soaking its faux suede can cause synthetic fibers to warp, bubble, or stiffen. Charles & Keith also advises avoiding wetting its faux suede. Because constructions vary, those cautions are not a substitute for the care instructions supplied with another shoe; they are a strong reason not to assume a synthetic shoe is washable.
Do not transfer a method from genuine suede simply because the surfaces look similar. For instance, a spray labeled for suede and nubuck may still exclude microsuede. Likewise, a recommendation to use a pencil eraser on one maker’s faux suede does not mean an eraser is approved for all synthetic finishes. When a maker allows an eraser, keep it clean, use it gently on the mark rather than abrading a broad area, and follow any instruction for restoring the nap afterward.
What to do if suede shoes get wet
Avoid soaking suede shoes. If a shoe gets wet, check the maker’s care instructions, blot excess moisture, and let it dry naturally away from direct heat. Do not machine wash or tumble dry it. PUMA warns that submersion, machine washing, and tumble drying can affect suede texture and color. Stuart Weitzman also advises avoiding extreme weather, humidity, and heat for its suede products.
- Blot excess moisture. Use a clean, absorbent cloth and press gently. Do not rub the wet surface.
- Let the shoe dry away from direct heat. Allow natural drying rather than using a heater, hair dryer, or tumble dryer.
- Follow the shoe maker’s next steps. Once dry, brush genuine suede gently if the instructions allow it. For faux suede, use only the maker-approved method for that construction.
- Get help if the finish changes or the shoe is heavily wet. For a delicate finish or a significant water mark, ask the shoe maker or a professional suede cleaner before trying stronger treatments.
Do not interpret “water resistant” or “protected” as permission to wash or submerge a shoe. The sources do not establish that a protector makes suede safe to soak, machine wash, or dry with heat.
Recommended Free Tools
Water and heat are separate risks: avoiding a soak does not make a hair dryer or radiator a safe shortcut. Several maker instructions emphasize natural or air drying, and PUMA’s warning includes tumble drying as well as submersion and machine washing. Once the shoe is dry, return to the method approved for that specific material. Do not assume that a water mark needs a stronger liquid treatment; if the mark remains, a professional cleaner can assess it without you escalating at home.

Should you apply a suede protector?
Protector sprays are material-specific. Do not use a genuine-suede product on faux suede or microsuede unless the shoe maker and product label explicitly say it is suitable. The 3M Scotchgard Suede & Nubuck Protector instructions cover genuine suede and nubuck and say not to use that product on microsuede, which 3M identifies as fabric.
For that 3M product, the maker directs users to test colorfastness on a hidden area, apply two light coats rather than one heavy coat, and reapply after cleaning, when water and stain repellency fades, or about every six months, whichever comes first. These directions apply to that product; they are not a universal schedule for every protector spray. Read the actual can label, verify that it matches the shoe’s material and finish, and follow its ventilation and application instructions.
- Do not spray a shoe merely because the label says “suede” if the shoe is faux suede or microsuede.
- Do not skip a hidden-area colorfastness test when the product instructions call for one.
- Do not assume a test on one shoe or finish proves compatibility with another pair.
- If the maker’s instructions and product label do not clearly agree, do not apply the product.
The order of checks matters: first confirm the shoe’s material and finish, then read the spray’s intended materials and directions. If either description excludes the shoe or leaves compatibility unclear, do not use that spray. The 3M example shows why the broad word “suede” on a product name is not enough: its Suede & Nubuck Protector is not intended for microsuede. Only follow the two-coat and six-month guidance when using that specific product as its maker directs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a cleaning method by material and stain
There is no single tested “best” cleaner or brush established for all suede shoes. Choose by material compatibility first, then by how extensive the mark is and how much cleaning the maker permits. A dry, localized mark may be a better candidate for a permitted eraser or block than for liquid cleaner; extensive staining or an uncertain finish calls for professional advice rather than escalating pressure or moisture at home.
| Situation | Reasonable first step | Key limit |
|---|---|---|
| Loose dust on genuine suede | Gently use a suede-specific brush | Avoid aggressive strokes and metal brushes unless the maker allows them |
| Localized mark on genuine suede | Use a cleaning block or suede cleaner as the shoe maker directs | Cleaner and damp-cloth methods are not interchangeable across all shoes |
| Dust on faux suede | Use a soft cloth; brush gently in the grain direction if permitted | Faux suede construction and care instructions vary |
| Localized mark on faux suede | Use a clean, soft eraser gently if the maker permits it | Stop if rubbing changes the color, nap, or surface |
| Extensive staining or delicate finish | Ask the shoe maker or a professional suede cleaner | A stronger home treatment can create texture or color changes |
Use this comparison as a way to choose the least intensive permitted step, not as a guarantee of stain removal. A brush or cloth is for dust and loose surface dirt; an eraser or block is a localized option where the maker approves it; a liquid cleaner is appropriate only when the material and directions match. The larger or more persistent the stain, the more important it is to weigh the risk of color transfer or texture change before trying another treatment.
What care products are worth having?
A small, material-appropriate kit can be more useful than a collection of general cleaners. For genuine suede, a soft suede brush is a directly supported basic tool for surface dirt and restoring the nap. A suede eraser or cleaning block can be useful for a localized mark if the maker allows it. A compatible suede-and-nubuck protector is an option only for genuine suede or nubuck when the particular spray’s label and the shoe’s instructions agree. For faux suede, a soft cloth and, where the maker permits it, a clean eraser are the more relevant examples.

If shopping for a kit, a search phrase such as suede shoe care kit brush eraser can help locate options, but check the actual contents and the materials each item is intended for. A kit label does not establish that every brush, eraser, or spray is suitable for your shoe. In particular, confirm whether a brush has metal bristles and whether a protector excludes microsuede. There is no verified product ranking or established cost comparison here, so choose by compatibility and the maker’s directions rather than an assumed “best” kit.
When home cleaning is the wrong choice
Consult the shoe maker or a professional suede cleaner when the stain is extensive, the finish is delicate or metallic, the material cannot be identified, or gentle maker-approved cleaning does not resolve the problem. Stuart Weitzman recommends professional suede cleaning for more extensive cleaning. That is especially useful when you cannot confirm that a liquid, brush, or eraser is compatible with the shoe.
Stop a home attempt if the nap becomes noticeably flattened, the color changes, or the surface begins to look different. Do not respond by scrubbing harder, adding an unapproved household cleaner, or applying a protector to conceal the change. Tell the cleaner what you used and follow the shoe maker’s advice about further treatment.
Professional cleaning is also a sensible next step when the pair has a finish that could be especially sensitive to abrasion or moisture, or when a stain covers a broad area rather than one small spot. Stuart Weitzman’s guidance specifically calls out more extensive cleaning as a reason to seek a professional. If you contact a cleaner, describe whether the shoe is genuine or synthetic suede if known, explain how it became stained or wet, and list any products or tools already used. This helps the cleaner assess the finish and avoids repeating an incompatible treatment.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Cleaning before identifying the material: genuine suede and synthetic faux suede do not necessarily share the same care method.
- Scrubbing wet dirt: let loose dirt dry before brushing, and blot moisture rather than rubbing a wet surface.
- Using too much water: avoid soaking suede. Some faux-suede makers specifically warn that wetting, washing, or soaking can damage their materials.
- Using heat to dry faster: let shoes air-dry away from direct heat; avoid tumble drying.
- Assuming protector sprays are interchangeable: 3M explicitly excludes microsuede from its Suede & Nubuck Protector.
- Applying force to a stubborn mark: gentle, limited cleaning is safer than aggressive brushing or rubbing, especially on an unknown finish.
- Assuming a similar-looking shoe has the same care needs: synthetic constructions and finishes vary, so another brand’s instructions may not apply.
- Using a tool just because it is sold for suede: brush designs differ, and some makers caution against metal brushes.
- Repeating a treatment without reassessing: if the color or nap changes, stop and ask for advice instead of adding more cleaner or pressure.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I clean genuine suede shoes?
Let loose dirt dry, then brush gently with a suede-specific brush. Use a cleaning block or a cleaner labeled for the shoe’s material only if the maker permits it. Let the shoe dry naturally away from direct heat, then brush gently with the grain to raise the nap.
Can suede shoes get wet?
Avoid soaking them. If they get wet, check the maker’s instructions, blot excess moisture with a clean cloth, and let them air-dry away from direct heat. Do not machine wash or tumble dry them; PUMA warns those methods and submersion can affect suede texture and color.

How do I clean faux-suede shoes?
Follow the care instructions for the exact shoe because faux suede can have different synthetic constructions. Depending on the maker’s directions, start with a soft microfiber cloth, brush gently in the grain direction, or use a clean eraser gently on a localized mark. Avoid assuming that all faux suede can be wetted or washed.
Can I use a suede protector on faux suede or microsuede?
Do not assume it is suitable. Check both the shoe maker’s instructions and the spray label. 3M says its Suede & Nubuck Protector is not for microsuede, which it identifies as fabric. Follow any required hidden-area colorfastness test and do not apply the spray if compatibility is unclear.
Can I put suede shoes in the washing machine or dryer?
No. Avoid machine washing and tumble drying suede shoes, and do not soak them. PUMA warns these methods can affect texture and color; a faux-suede maker also warns that washing, soaking, and tumble drying can warp, bubble, or stiffen synthetic fibers.
