Use the care instructions for your exact smart contact lens and the guidance of the eye care professional who fitted or prescribed it. There is no safe, universal cleaning recipe for electronic or sensor-enabled lenses: a solution, case, rubbing method, or replacement schedule suitable for one lens may not be suitable for another. Until you have model-specific instructions, do not guess or adapt an ordinary contact-lens routine.

If you are trying to work out how to clean smart contact lenses, whether regular contact-lens solution is safe, or whether smart contacts can get wet, the most important answer is the same: first identify the exact lens and its approved care system. General hygiene precautions can help reduce risk, but they do not establish that a particular product is compatible with a particular smart lens.

Why smart lenses need model-specific care

A smart contact lens is still worn on the eye, so ordinary contact-lens hygiene matters. But a smart lens may also have materials or components that make compatibility with a standard solution or cleaning method uncertain. A routine that is suitable for an ordinary soft lens—or for one smart-lens design—cannot automatically be transferred to a different device.

The FDA’s contact-lens list, accessed October 9, 2026, provides information and instructions for use for devices reviewed and released for sale in the United States. The sources reviewed for this article did not establish a currently marketed smart-lens model with a matching patient care label. That is not proof that no smart lens exists; it means you should verify the instructions for the specific device rather than assume that a general-purpose contact-lens product is appropriate. FDA also notes that additions to its list may lag a release by several weeks.

For context, the CDC says 45 million people in the United States wear contact lenses, a figure presented on its contact-lens overview page in 2025. That describes contact-lens wearers generally, not smart-lens use or the safety of any particular smart lens.

Find the instructions before handling or cleaning the lens

  • Use the manufacturer’s instructions for use for the exact lens model and follow the eye care professional who fitted or prescribed it.
  • Check that any solution, case, rinse, or cleaning accessory is explicitly approved for that lens. If compatibility is not clear, ask the manufacturer or eye care professional before using it.
  • Confirm the prescribed wear and replacement schedule. Do not infer how long to wear, store, or reuse a smart lens from the routine for another lens.
  • Keep the device name and its instructions together so that you can refer to the right care directions each time. If you have only a product description or a seller’s general claim, that is not a substitute for the device’s care instructions.

Before the first use, make sure you can answer practical questions from the device instructions: which care system is required, whether the lens is removed for cleaning or storage, what case or fluid is specified, and when the lens must be replaced. These details should come from the product directions and fitting professional, not from a guess based on the lens’s appearance or on how another contact lens is maintained.

Safe handling before cleaning

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Dry them completely before touching a lens; do not handle lenses with wet or dirty hands.
  2. Follow the device’s removal and cleaning instructions. Use only the stated method and products. Do not improvise a cleaning, charging, storage, or disinfection step for an electronic or sensor-enabled lens.
  3. Use fresh care solution when the approved system calls for it. Do not top off a case, reuse discarded solution, or mix old solution with fresh solution. Saline is not a disinfectant, and a daily cleaner may clean without disinfecting.
  4. Store the lens only as directed. Use the specified case and storage conditions; do not substitute a different case or fluid based on appearance or convenience.
  5. Follow the stated schedule each time. If the instructions specify a sequence, use that sequence rather than skipping a step because the lens looks clean. If a direction is unclear or appears inconsistent with advice you received, pause and check with the eye care professional or manufacturer.

These are hygiene safeguards, not a substitute for a smart lens’s own instructions. If the device instructions conflict with a general contact-lens routine, pause and ask the eye care professional or manufacturer which procedure applies to that model. Do not try to resolve an apparent conflict by combining instructions from two different products.

How ordinary contact-lens care systems differ

Contact-lens products are not interchangeable. CDC guidance describes different routines for soft lenses and rigid gas permeable lenses, and some systems require separate cleaning and disinfection steps. The following distinctions help explain why the specific lens label matters; they do not establish compatibility with a smart lens.

Care system or product What it does or requires What to check
Multipurpose solution for soft lenses For a soft lens when that system is intended for it, CDC says to rub and rinse the lens and store it in fresh solution each time it is removed. Confirm the lens is a soft lens and that its instructions approve the solution and routine. Never top off or reuse solution.
Saline May be used for rinsing where directed, but it does not disinfect. Do not treat saline as a cleaning-and-disinfection replacement.
Daily cleaner Cleans, but does not disinfect on its own; additional steps may be necessary. Follow the full labeled system and the lens instructions rather than stopping after the cleaning step.
Hydrogen peroxide system Requires the special case supplied with the product and the full labeled neutralization time. Never put unneutralized peroxide in the eye or use it to rinse a lens immediately before insertion. Misuse can cause burning, irritation, or eye damage.
Rigid gas permeable lens system Uses a care system that differs from soft-lens systems. Do not assume that a product made for soft lenses is appropriate.

How to compare a care product with a lens label

Do not choose a solution based only on a label saying it cleans or disinfects contact lenses. Check the lens type the product is intended for, whether it cleans, rinses, and disinfects in one system or requires distinct steps, and whether it uses hydrogen peroxide with a supplied neutralizing case. Then confirm that both the lens instructions and the eye care professional approve that system for the exact lens. These are useful comparison points for ordinary lens-care systems, not a way to infer smart-lens compatibility.

In particular, a bottle labeled saline is not interchangeable with a disinfecting solution. Saline may be used for rinsing where directed, but it does not disinfect. Likewise, a daily cleaner is not necessarily the whole care routine: it cleans but does not disinfect by itself, so additional steps may be required. Read and follow the complete product directions as well as the lens instructions.

Special caution with hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide systems are not used like multipurpose solution. FDA guidance says to use the special case supplied with the product and allow the full labeled neutralization time. Do not put unneutralized peroxide in your eye, and do not use it to rinse a lens immediately before insertion. Misuse can cause burning, irritation, or eye damage. If you are not sure whether neutralization is complete or which case belongs with the system, do not insert the lens; check the product label and ask an eye care professional.

Never adapt a peroxide routine to a smart lens unless the exact lens instructions approve it. A system that is appropriate for one ordinary lens type is not automatically suitable for a lens with different materials or components.

Keep the case clean, but use the approved method

CDC recommends cleaning a contact-lens case with solution rather than water, then storing it upside down with the caps off after use. CDC also recommends replacing the case at least every three months. Apply those case-care steps to a smart-lens setup only if its instructions permit that case and method. Do not assume that a case meant for an ordinary lens is appropriate for a smart lens, or replace a specified case with a different one for convenience.

Follow the case’s own directions as part of the lens-care system. If you are told to use fresh solution, discard what remains rather than adding new solution to it. If the case or storage method is not identified in the smart-lens instructions, ask the manufacturer or fitting professional instead of treating a generic case as a safe default.

Keep smart lenses away from water

Do not rinse or store contact lenses in tap, bottled, distilled, lake, or ocean water. Remove them before showering, swimming, or using a hot tub. Water can deform soft lenses and expose the eyes to germs, including Acanthamoeba. The CDC puts it plainly: “Contact lenses and water are a bad combination—even when showering, swimming, or using a hot tub.” The quotation comes from CDC’s “Healthy Habits: Keeping Water Away from Contact Lenses,” updated May 27, 2025.

Water is not a substitute for a lens rinse or disinfectant, even if it looks clean or comes from a bottle. Keep lenses and cases away from water during washing, bathing, and water activities. If your smart-lens device has separate instructions for a particular activity or exposure, follow those exact directions too; do not infer that electronics or sensors make a lens waterproof.

If water touches a lens

CDC guidance says to remove a lens promptly and either discard it or clean and disinfect it overnight before wearing it again. For a smart lens, follow any more specific device instruction instead of assuming that overnight disinfection is safe for its materials or components. If there is no specific instruction, leave the lens out and ask the eye care professional or manufacturer what to do.

Do not put a water-exposed lens back on the eye simply because it looks unchanged. Nor should you choose between discarding and overnight disinfection by guessing which option is more convenient: a smart lens’s own instructions may limit what can be done to it. If you cannot confirm a safe next step, keep it out until you have professional guidance.

Wear, sleep, and replacement schedules

Do not sleep in contact lenses unless your eye care professional has directed you to do so. Follow the exact smart lens’s prescribed wear and replacement schedule; do not extend wear or reuse a lens because it looks clean or appears to work normally. A general schedule for another lens type does not establish the safe schedule for a smart lens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single replacement interval or wear duration to apply to every smart lens based on the information here. Confirm how long the device may be worn, when it should be removed, and when it must be replaced from the model-specific instructions and the person who prescribed it. Do not assume that a lens can be worn longer because it is electronic, sensor-enabled, or still functioning. If the schedule is missing or unclear, ask before continuing to wear it.

When to stop wearing the lens and get help

Remove the lens and contact an eye care professional if you develop redness, irritation, pain, or a change in vision. Do not put the lens back in merely because cleaning it seems likely to help. If symptoms are severe or worsening, seek prompt professional advice.

When asking for help, explain which lens model you have, what care product or method you used, and when the symptoms began. This information does not replace an examination, but it helps the professional understand the situation. Do not use a different solution, repeat a cleaning step, or reinsert the lens as a test when symptoms have occurred.

What is known about smart-lens availability

Smart-lens development and availability have changed over time, and a project announcement is not the same as a current product-care label. On January 6, 2023, Mojo Vision CEO Drew Perkins wrote that the company had decided to “decelerate work on Mojo Lens.” That statement describes that project at that time; it does not establish the current status of the whole smart-lens field.

Before buying, using, or cleaning a device described as a smart contact lens, verify that you have the exact model’s instructions and professional fitting or prescribing guidance. Without those, there is no evidence-backed basis for recommending a particular solution, storage case, or cleaning accessory. FDA’s list concerns devices reviewed and released for sale in the United States, and FDA says its additions may lag a release by several weeks; it is one place to check, not a guarantee that every product worldwide appears there.

No smart-lens model comparison or specific cleaning product can be recommended without verified compatibility for the device. General contact-lens products may be relevant to ordinary lens wear, but an unspecified smart lens could have different care requirements. Treat a product recommendation as applicable only when the lens’s own instructions or a qualified professional confirms that it is appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use regular contact-lens solution on smart contacts?

Not unless the instructions for your exact smart lens or your eye care professional say that the solution is compatible. Lens-care systems vary: soft and rigid gas permeable lenses use different systems, and some products clean without disinfecting. Do not infer compatibility from a product being described as multipurpose or suitable for ordinary contacts.

Can smart contact lenses get wet?

Keep contact lenses away from water. CDC advises removing lenses before showering, swimming, or using a hot tub, and not rinsing or storing them in tap, bottled, distilled, lake, or ocean water. If water touches a smart lens, remove it promptly and follow its specific instructions; if those do not say what to do, leave it out and ask an eye care professional or the manufacturer.

Can I use saline to clean or disinfect a smart lens?

Saline may be used for rinsing where directed, but it does not disinfect. Do not use it instead of the full cleaning and disinfection system specified for the lens.

Is hydrogen peroxide contact solution safe for a smart lens?

Only if the exact lens instructions approve that system. Hydrogen peroxide systems require the supplied special case and the full labeled neutralization time. Never put unneutralized peroxide in the eye or rinse a lens with it just before insertion; misuse can cause burning, irritation, or eye damage.

What should I do if I sleep in a smart contact lens by accident?

Remove it when you are able and follow the device’s instructions and your eye care professional’s advice. Do not make a habit of sleeping in lenses unless your professional has directed you to do so, and contact an eye care professional if you have redness, irritation, pain, or a change in vision.

When should I stop wearing a smart contact lens?

Remove it and contact an eye care professional for redness, irritation, pain, or changed vision. Do not reinsert it just because it looks clean after rinsing or cleaning. Seek prompt professional advice if symptoms are severe or worsening.

How often should I replace a smart-lens case?

Follow the instructions for the specific device and its approved case. CDC recommends replacing ordinary contact-lens cases at least every three months, but apply that recommendation to a smart-lens setup only if its instructions permit that case and method.

The Bottom Line

There is no universal cleaning routine for smart contact lenses. Use the exact device instructions and your eye care professional’s guidance, use only approved products and storage methods, keep lenses away from water, and never reuse or top off solution. If the instructions are missing or symptoms develop, leave the lens out and get professional advice rather than guessing.
