To help a cordless tool battery last, follow the manual for the exact battery and charger, keep the pack dry and away from temperature extremes, and charge it only within the maker’s permitted temperature range. Storage charge recommendations differ—even between manufacturer pages—so there is no universal percentage to target.
Start with the battery and charger manual
Battery care varies by brand, model, and tool platform. Check the tool or battery manual for its permitted charging and storage temperatures, storage charge guidance, cleaning instructions, and approved charger. If replacing a battery or charger, verify compatibility with the exact tool platform and model rather than relying on appearance or a broad product description.
Store batteries dry and within the maker’s limits
Choose a dry storage location and avoid temperature extremes. Do not assume one temperature or charge level is right for every rechargeable power-tool battery. For example, STIHL’s published recommendations vary by page and region:

These are manufacturer-specific recommendations, not a single universal storage prescription. Use the guidance for your battery’s exact model and market. If you keep spare packs, STIHL USA advises using them in rotation.

- User Guide:When installing the battery, align it with the slot and apply moderate pressure until you hear a click, indicating it is securely in place. After installation, gently pull the battery to verify it is locked. Clean the contacts regularly and use compatible batteries to ensure proper operation.
Charge only within the permitted temperature range
Check the manual before charging a pack that has been stored in a cold or hot place. STIHL’s charging guidance, dated 18 January 2026, gives 5–40°C as the charging range for its lithium-ion batteries. It notes that a charger may wait for a hot battery to cool, and warns not to heat a battery to make it charge. Follow the range specified for your own battery, rather than applying STIHL’s figure to another brand or model. See STIHL’s charging guidance.
Partial charges are acceptable for lithium-ion packs
For lithium-ion batteries, STIHL says partial charging does not cause the “memory effect” associated with older nickel-cadmium batteries. You do not need to deliberately drain a lithium-ion pack completely before recharging it. This advice is specific to lithium-ion chemistry; follow the instructions for any other battery type.

Clean batteries without damaging them
DEWALT recommends cleaning batteries with a clean, slightly damp cloth and says not to use solvents. Its safety guidance also warns against liquids and oils. Keep the pack and its contacts dry, and use the cleaning method specified in your product documentation. See DEWALT’s battery safety tips.
Choose compatible replacement batteries and chargers
Battery platforms and chargers are not automatically interchangeable. Check the exact tool and battery model documentation before buying or using a replacement. DEWALT recommends authentic DEWALT batteries with DEWALT tools and chargers; for other brands, follow that manufacturer’s compatibility guidance. A battery that physically fits is not, by itself, proof that it is approved for the tool or charger.

Retire batteries through an appropriate collection route
When a battery reaches end of life, use a suitable battery collection or disposal route rather than putting it in ordinary household waste. DEWALT directs users to service centers for lithium-ion battery disposal regardless of manufacturer, but acceptance can vary by location. Check with the service center or local waste authority before you travel.

STIHL states that one of its lithium-ion batteries loses 1–3% of capacity per year through self-discharge. That is a manufacturer statement about self-discharge, not a general estimate of battery lifespan or cycle life. The reviewed manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal expected service life for power-tool batteries.
