Start with the care label on that specific garment. It is the best authority for washing, water temperature, drying method and heat, bleach, ironing, and dry-cleaning. If machine washing is allowed, turn a printed shirt inside out, then use the label’s cycle and temperature. For drying, follow the label; a custom-apparel provider recommends either low-heat tumble drying or laying the shirt flat to air dry, but that is practical guidance rather than a guarantee for every fabric and print.

This guide explains how to read the instructions, wash and dry graphics with less unnecessary wear, handle ironing and stains cautiously, and decide what to do when advice conflicts. It does not claim that one method works for every ink, fabric, or decoration.

The care label is the controlling instruction

Graphic T-shirts can combine different fibers, dyes, inks, coatings, and trims. Because those combinations vary, a general rule from the internet should not override the label sewn into your shirt. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Care Labeling Rule requires covered apparel labels to state the regular care needed for ordinary use. Depending on the garment, that information includes whether to wash by hand or machine, necessary water temperature, whether to dry by machine or another method, and any necessary dryer temperature. Manufacturers and importers must have a reasonable basis for the instructions they provide, which can include reliable evidence or successful testing. Read the FTC rule at ftc.gov/legal-library/browse/rules/care-labeling-textile-wearing-apparel-certain-piece-goods-text.

Before the first wash, identify every instruction on the label:

  • Ironing: the permitted temperature or a “do not iron” warning.
  • Dry-cleaning: whether it is allowed, required, or prohibited, and any stated method.

If the label uses symbols rather than words, use the FTC/ASTM chart at ftc.gov/system/files/documents/rules/care-labeling-textile-wearing-apparel-certain-piece-goods/astm_care_symbols_chart.pdf. Do not infer a temperature, cycle, or chemical permission that the symbol does not show.

Before washing: make a quick inspection

Look over the whole garment before placing it in a washer. Confirm that the label belongs to the shirt, is still legible, and has not been covered by a removable tag or a second instruction from the printer. If the shirt has a separate hood, patch, trim, or attached decoration, note whether it could rub the graphic or require a different treatment. Empty pockets and close zippers, hooks, and other fasteners. Hard objects and open fasteners can scrape the printed face or other garments; closing them is a simple mechanical precaution, not a substitute for following the label.

Check the graphic while it is dry. If it is already cracked, lifting, tacky, or peeling, photograph the condition and ask the maker for advice before washing. A pre-existing defect can make it difficult to tell whether a later change came from laundering or from normal wear. Do not try to press a lifted edge flat or glue it down unless the responsible maker gives a specific repair instruction.

A low-risk wash routine for a printed shirt

The following routine works only when the garment’s label permits machine washing. Where the label gives a more specific instruction, use that instruction instead.

  1. Check the entire label. Confirm washing is permitted, note the cycle and maximum temperature, and look for restrictions on bleach, drying, ironing, and dry-cleaning.
  2. Empty pockets and close fasteners. Zippers, hooks, and hard objects can rub against the printed face. This is a mechanical precaution, not a substitute for the label.
  3. Turn the shirt inside out. Custom Ink recommends this for custom T-shirts, including garments described on its care page as screen printed or digitally printed. The FTC defines “wash inside out” as turning the product inside out to protect the face of the fabric. See customink.com/care_instructions/ and the FTC rule linked above.
  4. Use the labeled cycle and water temperature. Do not select a hotter or more aggressive setting because the shirt looks sturdy. The label’s maximum temperature and cycle are the relevant limits for that garment.
  5. Use detergent or soap suitable for ordinary machine washing. The FTC’s rule describes machine washing as cleaning with water, detergent or soap, and agitation. The available evidence does not establish that a particular brand or “print-safe” formula protects every graphic better, so a specialty product is not a universal requirement.
  6. Remove the shirt promptly when the cycle ends. This helps avoid prolonged damp contact and creasing. It is a handling practice, not a tested claim about print lifespan.

Turning a shirt inside out protects the graphic’s face from direct contact with the drum and other garments. The sources support that protective purpose, but they do not quantify how many additional washes it provides.

What “inside out” does and does not mean

Turn the shirt so the printed surface faces inward before it enters the washer. Keep it that way through the wash unless the label or maker says otherwise. Inside-out washing is a way to reduce direct exposure of the face of the fabric to rubbing; it does not change the permitted water temperature, cycle, detergent, bleach rule, or drying method. It also cannot correct damage that already exists.

How to dry a graphic T-shirt without unnecessary heat

Drying can expose a print and the base fabric to heat and mechanical tumbling. The label decides whether a dryer is allowed and which setting is acceptable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If tumble drying is allowed

Choose the lowest heat permitted by the label. Custom Ink’s provider guidance recommends low-heat tumble drying for its custom T-shirts. Treat that as practical provider advice, not a tested guarantee for every garment, ink, or fabric. If the label says “do not tumble dry,” do not use a dryer even on low heat.

If the label calls for air drying

Use the method shown: line dry, drip dry, or dry flat. Custom Ink specifically recommends laying its custom T-shirts flat to air dry as an alternative to low-heat tumbling. Dry the garment in a clean, well-ventilated place and keep the printed surface from rubbing against rough or dirty surfaces.

When a label specifies flat drying, support the shirt so its weight does not distort the shape while wet. When it specifies line or drip drying, use the stated method rather than substituting a dryer for convenience. Let the garment become completely dry before folding or storing it. Do not fold it while damp, because prolonged moisture contact and creasing are avoidable handling risks.

Why “can I put a printed shirt in the dryer?” has no single answer

Some printed shirts may be tumble dried at a specified temperature; others must be air dried. A provider’s low-heat recommendation cannot override a garment label that prohibits machine drying. Check the label each time you care for a shirt whose instructions are unfamiliar or whose label has faded.

Ironing, bleach, and dry-cleaning require label-level decisions

Ironing

Use the iron symbol and temperature limit on the label. If it says “do not iron,” do not iron the garment. The reviewed sources do not establish one safe technique for placing an iron over every type of graphic, so do not treat a cloth barrier, reverse-side ironing, or a particular temperature as universally safe. When an item has no usable instruction, ask the maker before applying heat to the print.

If ironing is permitted, interpret the symbol’s temperature as the garment’s limit, not a suggestion to test higher heat. Keep the iron moving as directed by the label and avoid assuming that the unprinted side has the same tolerance as the graphic. The label and maker remain the appropriate authorities for any decoration-specific instruction.

Bleach

Follow the bleach symbol exactly. A “do not bleach” symbol means not to use bleach. Because inks, dyes, and fibers differ, do not prescribe chlorine bleach, oxygen bleach, or a homemade substitute as a universal stain treatment.

Dry-cleaning

If the label requires or permits dry-cleaning, use the stated instruction and tell the cleaner that the garment has a graphic. The FTC consumer compliance guide explains that a garment cannot be labeled “Dryclean Only” unless there is proof that washing would harm it. That regulatory requirement does not authorize you to disregard the label on an individual shirt. See ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/clothes-captioning-complying-care-labeling-rule.

Reading the main care symbols

The FTC/ASTM chart organizes symbols by the care stage they control. Use the actual symbol on your garment; the table below is a navigation aid, not a replacement for the chart.

Symbol family What it controls What to verify on the garment
Wash tub Washing method and cycle Whether washing is allowed, the cycle, and the maximum water temperature
Bleach triangle Bleaching Whether bleach is allowed and any restriction shown by the symbol
Square Drying Tumble-dry permission, heat level, or air-drying method such as line or flat drying
Iron Pressing Permitted iron temperature or a “do not iron” instruction
Circle Professional dry-cleaning Whether dry-cleaning is allowed and the method or restrictions shown

The chart includes symbols for maximum water temperatures, drying cycles and methods, iron temperatures, and “do not” instructions. If the label combines words and symbols, follow the more specific restriction rather than guessing.

How to resolve a symbol you cannot identify

Use the FTC/ASTM chart rather than relying on a social-media graphic or a guess based on the shape alone. A wash tub, square, triangle, iron, and circle each govern a different stage. Dots, bars, crosses, and other marks can change the permitted heat, cycle, or method. If the label is too small, photograph it and enlarge the image, then confirm the result against the official chart. If the symbol remains ambiguous, contact the maker before washing.

Stains: why there is no universal recipe

There is no reliable, cross-garment stain-removal method established for all printed apparel in the available evidence. A treatment that is acceptable for one cotton shirt may discolor another fabric or affect a particular ink or coating. Before spot-treating:

  1. Read the garment label and any instructions supplied by the printer or maker.
  2. Check whether the label prohibits bleach, specifies a wash temperature, or requires professional cleaning.
  3. Ask the maker for print-specific advice when the stain is important or the graphic is valuable.
  4. If you try a permitted product, test it on an inconspicuous area first and stop if color or surface changes appear.

Do not assume that solvents, strong bleaching agents, abrasive scrubbing, or high heat are safe because they remove a mark quickly. The evidence does not support one chemical or one heat setting for every combination of print and fabric.

For a fresh spill, first follow the label’s allowed cleaning route rather than improvising a chemical treatment. Avoid rubbing the graphic aggressively while deciding what to do. If a stain requires professional cleaning, show the cleaner the label and identify the printed area so the service can evaluate it under the stated restrictions.

Screen print, DTG, DTF, and embroidery: what can and cannot be inferred

Custom-apparel guidance discusses screen printing, direct-to-garment (DTG), direct-to-film (DTF), and embroidery in its care information. However, the reviewed sources do not provide controlled durability comparisons or prove that each process requires a different washing temperature, cycle, or drying method. Do not choose a hotter wash for one process or a special routine for another based only on the decoration’s name.

For practical decisions, use these supported axes instead:

  • the garment-specific wash method and maximum temperature;
  • the garment-specific drying method and heat limit;
  • bleach and ironing restrictions;
  • any instructions supplied by the company that made or printed the garment.

Two shirts with the same print process can still have different fabrics and labels. Conversely, two shirts made from similar fabric can carry different instructions because of their decoration or construction.

When advice conflicts

You may find a printer’s webpage, a retailer’s tag, and a friend’s laundry rule all saying different things. Treat the sewn-in label as the garment’s formal care instruction and provider webpages as guidance for that provider’s products. Contact the responsible maker when the instructions conflict, and keep the written response with your order details. Follow the more restrictive direction until the maker confirms that a label is incorrect or has been replaced.

Do not use a generic instruction for “all screen prints” or “all cotton shirts” to overrule a specific prohibition. The FTC rule requires a reasonable basis for covered care information, but it does not turn a general provider recommendation into a universal instruction for every garment sold elsewhere.

Troubleshooting common care mistakes

The print feels cracked or starts lifting after washing

Stop using the hottest or most aggressive settings until you have rechecked the label. Turn the shirt inside out for permitted machine washes, use the labeled cycle and temperature, and choose the label-approved drying method. Do not apply an iron or chemical treatment to “reset” the print without maker guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The shirt label is missing or unreadable

Do not invent a temperature or bleach rule. Contact the manufacturer, printer, or retailer with the garment’s details and ask for the original care instructions. Until you receive them, avoid bleach, high heat, and direct ironing on the graphic; these are risk-reduction choices, not a substitute for verified instructions.

The label conflicts with advice from the printer or a friend

Ask the printer to clarify the conflict and keep the written answer. The sewn-in label is the garment’s formal care instruction, while provider pages are general guidance for the provider’s products. Follow any more restrictive instruction unless the responsible maker confirms a correction.

The shirt must be cleaned immediately

Use only the method the label permits. If it says hand wash, do not switch to a machine for convenience. If it says dry-clean only, use a professional cleaner rather than improvising a home solvent treatment.

The graphic was washed correctly but the shirt is still damp

Use the label-approved drying method and allow the garment to dry fully before storage. If the label permits a dryer, select only the stated heat; if it requires air drying, do not finish with an unapproved hot cycle. Keep the printed face from contacting rough or dirty surfaces while it dries.

Storage and handling between washes

Care does not end when the cycle finishes. Store the shirt clean and completely dry, with the graphic protected from prolonged rubbing against rough surfaces. Avoid folding it while damp. If you hang it, use a hanger that does not distort the shoulders; if the label or fabric calls for flat drying, preserve that shape while it dries. These handling steps reduce avoidable abrasion and moisture exposure, but they are not a measured guarantee of print life.

Keep the care label attached when possible. If you cut it out because it irritates your skin, save a photograph or written copy of every instruction. That record can prevent guessing later, especially when a symbol includes a temperature or a “do not” restriction.

A one-minute checklist

  • Locate and read the complete care label.
  • Confirm the allowed wash method and maximum temperature.
  • Turn the shirt inside out when machine washing is permitted.
  • Use ordinary detergent or soap and the labeled cycle.
  • Choose only the labeled drying method and heat; use low-heat tumbling or flat air drying only when compatible with the instructions.
  • Follow the bleach and ironing symbols; never assume a print-safe chemical or iron setting.
  • For stains, consult the label and maker before spot-treating.
  • When instructions are missing or conflicting, contact the responsible maker instead of guessing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I wash a graphic T-shirt without ruining the print?

Read the shirt’s care label first. If machine washing is allowed, Custom Ink recommends turning a custom T-shirt inside out, then using the label’s cycle and maximum water temperature. Follow the label for bleach, drying, and ironing as well.

Can I put a printed shirt in the dryer?

Only if the garment label permits tumble drying. Use the specified heat, with the lowest permitted setting being the cautious choice. Custom Ink recommends low-heat tumbling for its custom shirts, but that guidance does not override a “do not tumble dry” label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should every printed shirt be washed inside out?

Inside-out washing is provider-recommended for custom T-shirts because it protects the face of the fabric from direct contact. Apply it when machine washing is allowed, but still follow any more specific instruction on the garment label.

Is cold water always safest for graphics?

There is no universal temperature rule in the cited guidance. Use the maximum water temperature and cycle shown on the garment’s label rather than substituting a generic cold-water rule.

Can I use bleach on a graphic shirt?

Only when the bleach symbol permits it and the maker’s instructions agree. Do not assume chlorine bleach, oxygen bleach, or a homemade substitute is safe for every ink, dye, and fabric.

What should I do if the care label is missing?

Contact the manufacturer, printer, or retailer for the original instructions. Until you receive them, avoid bleach, high heat, and direct ironing on the graphic; these precautions do not replace verified care information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does screen printing need different care from DTG or DTF printing?

The cited sources do not provide controlled durability comparisons or prove process-specific temperatures or cycles. Use the individual garment’s wash, dry, bleach, and ironing instructions instead of relying on the decoration’s name.

How should I remove a stain from printed apparel?

No single stain method is established for all print and fabric combinations. Check the label and maker’s directions first, ask for print-specific advice when the garment matters, and test any permitted product on an inconspicuous area before proceeding.

The Bottom Line

Follow the specific garment label above all generic laundry advice. When machine washing is permitted, turn the shirt inside out and use the labeled cycle and temperature. Dry only by the permitted method and heat; low-heat tumbling or flat air drying are provider recommendations, not universal guarantees. Treat bleach, ironing, dry-cleaning, and stain products as label-dependent, and contact the maker whenever instructions are missing or conflict.
