If a fingernail or toenail is partly detached after an injury, do not pull it off, glue it down, or pierce it to release trapped blood. Protect the area, control any bleeding, and arrange prompt medical assessment when the nail is torn, displaced, badly crushed, the finger or toe looks deformed, or symptoms are worsening. Home care is limited to a minor injury in which bleeding stops quickly, the nail is not cut or torn and remains attached to the nail bed, and the digit is straight and normally shaped.

What a partially detached nail can mean

A nail that is lifting from the nail bed after a door slam, fall, impact, or crush may represent a partial nail avulsion or an injury to the nail bed beneath it. The visible nail is only a cover; the tissue underneath can be cut even when the split is small. A loose nail can also result from non-traumatic nail separation (onycholysis), infection, skin disease, repeated moisture or chemical exposure, or another medical condition. This guide addresses first aid and triage, not diagnosis.

Do not tug the nail to see how loose it is. Pulling can enlarge a tear, disturb the nail bed, and cause bleeding. Do not use household or cosmetic nail glue to reattach it. Adhesive can trap contamination and make a clinician’s examination or treatment more difficult. Do not push a lifted section back under the cuticle or try to make the nail look normal before it is assessed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to do in the first few minutes

  1. Remove rings or tight footwear. Swelling can make them difficult to remove later. If a ring cannot be taken off because swelling is rapid, seek urgent help rather than forcing it.
  2. Control external bleeding. Place clean gauze or a clean cloth over the wound and apply steady, gentle pressure. If blood continues despite sustained pressure, obtain prompt medical care.
  3. Rinse minor surface dirt. For a small cut or scrape, gently wash with clean running water. Do not scrub under a lifted nail or probe the nail bed.
  4. Cover for protection. A clean bandage or non-stick sterile dressing can protect a minor wound from catching on clothing. Keep the dressing clean and change it according to a clinician’s instructions if the injury has been treated.
  5. Reduce pain and throbbing. MedlinePlus advises wrapping an ice pack in cloth and applying it intermittently, rather than placing ice directly on skin. Elevating the hand or foot above heart level can reduce throbbing.
  6. Leave the nail in its current position. Do not push it back under the cuticle, tape it tightly, or attempt to reconstruct it.

These measures are temporary protection. They do not replace an examination when the nail is displaced, torn, or associated with a significant crush. If you are unsure whether bleeding has stopped, whether the nail is still attached, or whether the digit is straight, choose medical advice rather than repeatedly handling the nail to check.

A quick severity check

Before deciding that an injury is minor, look at the whole finger or toe, not just the nail. Ask four practical questions:

  • Has bleeding stopped quickly with gentle pressure?
  • Is the nail itself intact, uncut, and still attached to the nail bed?
  • Is the finger or toe straight and normally shaped?
  • Can you leave the nail alone without it being displaced, hanging, or exposing a wound?

All four answers need to be reassuring for home care to be reasonable. A single “no” changes the plan to contacting a healthcare professional. This distinction helps prevent a nail-bed cut or fracture from being treated like an ordinary surface scrape.

When home care is reasonable—and when it is not

Criteria for a minor, stable injury

MedlinePlus describes home care as appropriate only when bleeding stops quickly, the nail is not cut or torn and remains attached to the nail bed, and the finger or toe is not bent or misshapen. A superficial scrape around an otherwise firmly attached nail may fit this category. If any one of those conditions is absent, contact a healthcare professional for advice rather than treating it as a simple nail problem.

Arrange prompt medical assessment

  • The nail is sitting on top of, beside, or away from the nail bed instead of lying normally in place.
  • A substantial section is torn, hanging, split, or completely detached.
  • Bleeding does not stop with sustained direct pressure.
  • The finger or toe is bent, crooked, numb, unusually pale, or otherwise misshapen.
  • The injury was a forceful crush, especially if the fingertip or toe is very swollen or painful.
  • You cannot tell whether the nail bed is cut, or the nail has separated enough to expose it.

Significant nail injuries can occur with a fracture. A clinician may need to clean the wound, numb the digit, obtain imaging, remove part or all of the nail, repair a nail-bed laceration, or protect the nail bed while it heals. A nail that is merely loose at one corner is not automatically an emergency, but it still needs careful protection and a low threshold for assessment if its position changes.

Can you trim the loose edge?

If a small projecting edge is catching on fabric, NHS guidance says an injured loose nail may be cut back only to the point where it remains attached. This is conservative trimming, not removal of the nail. Use clean clippers, make a single small cut away from attached nail and skin, and stop if cutting causes pain or bleeding. Never cut through a section that is still attached to the nail bed, and do not attempt this when the nail is substantially torn, displaced, or the digit is deformed; those situations need clinical assessment.

If you cannot clearly see where the nail is still attached, do not trim it. A jagged edge is less important than preserving the attachment and avoiding a second injury. A clinician can remove damaged portions under clean conditions if that becomes necessary.

What not to do

  • Do not pull or rip the nail off. A nail that is still attached may be protecting injured tissue.
  • Do not glue it back. Cosmetic or household adhesives are not a substitute for medical repair.
  • Do not drill, burn, or pierce the nail. Creating a hole to drain a blood collection (trephination) should be performed only by a healthcare professional. Cleveland Clinic explains the procedure at its nail-trephination guidance.
  • Do not force a dressing under the nail. Packing can worsen a tear and introduce bacteria.
  • Do not use leftover antibiotics or steroid creams without advice. Treatment depends on the wound, contamination, and any fracture; not every nail injury requires antibiotics.

There is no safe home technique for “reattaching” a partially detached nail. The useful home goals are controlling bleeding, reducing swelling, preventing catching, and getting the right level of medical evaluation.

Signs of infection or a complication

Monitor the skin and wound over the following days. Increasing redness, warmth, swelling, or pain around the nail; pus or other drainage; or fever warrants contact with a healthcare provider. Red, swollen, warm, sore skin around a nail should not be dismissed as normal healing. Seek urgent evaluation for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain out of proportion to the visible injury, loss of sensation, or a digit that becomes pale or blue.

A nail that remains improperly positioned, keeps splitting, or develops a persistent gap also deserves review. A clinician can distinguish a healing traumatic separation from infection, inflammatory skin disease, or another cause of onycholysis. Cleveland Clinic’s overview of nail separation is available at Onycholysis (Nail Separation): Symptoms & Treatment.

Improvement should generally move in the right direction: bleeding settles, swelling and pain ease, and the nail stays protected. A new or worsening symptom is more important than how dramatic the nail looked immediately after the accident.

What a clinician may do

Evaluation starts with the circulation, sensation, movement, alignment, and condition of the finger or toe, followed by inspection of the nail and nail bed. X-rays may be considered when the mechanism or examination suggests a fracture. The treatment is matched to the injury; a partly lifted nail does not automatically need removal.

  • Cleaning and numbing: The provider may irrigate the wound and use a local anesthetic before examining or repairing it.
  • Nail-bed repair: A cut nail bed may be closed with fine stitches or another appropriate method to restore its surface.
  • Nail management: MedlinePlus notes that a clinician may remove part or all of a damaged nail. If the original nail cannot be reattached, a substitute material may temporarily protect the nail bed.
  • Protection during healing: A dressing, splint, or other protection may be recommended, particularly when the fingertip or toe is vulnerable to further impact.

Follow the provider’s exact wound-care and dressing-change instructions. Ask which pain medicines are safe for you, when to return, and what changes should trigger earlier review. Do not assume that an antibiotic is needed simply because the nail is detached; the decision depends on the wound and clinical findings.

Blood under the nail: why home drainage is risky

A dark collection under a nail can be painful because pressure builds in a confined space. It may accompany a crush or fracture, and a lifted or split nail can indicate deeper damage. Do not make a hole yourself with a needle, drill, heated object, or commercial “trephination” tool. Only a healthcare provider should decide whether drainage is appropriate and perform it under clean conditions. If the nail is separated or split, the clinician may need to address the nail bed rather than simply release pressure.

Trying to drain it yourself can create an additional wound, contaminate the nail bed, or miss an associated fracture. The fact that blood looks trapped does not by itself tell you whether the nail needs drainage, removal, repair, or observation.

Recovery and nail regrowth

The injured nail may shed as a new nail advances from its growth area. MedlinePlus puts it this way: “Often, a new nail will grow in and replace the old nail, pushing it off as it grows.” The timetable depends on the digit, the extent of nail-bed damage, age, circulation, and other health factors. The published estimates are ranges, not promises:

What is healing or growing Approximate time Source and qualification
Nail bed after nail loss About 7–10 days MedlinePlus, “Nail injuries,” reviewed 2025-10-01; an approximate healing estimate.
New fingernail About 4–6 months MedlinePlus, reviewed 2025-10-01; growth estimate after loss or injury.
Injured fingernail Usually within 6 months NHS, “Nail problems”; the page’s search listing did not provide a publication date.
New toenail About 12 months MedlinePlus, reviewed 2025-10-01.
Injured toenail Up to 18 months NHS, “Nail problems”; the page’s search listing did not provide a publication date.

The difference between the MedlinePlus and NHS toenail estimates reflects normal variation in guidance, not a guaranteed deadline. A regrowing nail can show ridges, grooves, discoloration, or an altered shape. The appearance may improve as it advances, but a nail-bed scar can leave a lasting change. Protect the new growth from repeated impact and keep follow-up appointments if the clinician recommends them.

Regrowth is gradual, so a nail can look uneven for weeks or months without that alone proving infection. What matters is the trend and the condition of the surrounding skin. Persistent pain, drainage, increasing separation, or a nail that grows in an abnormal position should be reviewed rather than watched indefinitely.

If the nail is lifting without an obvious injury

Gradual separation, repeated lifting, or several affected nails is not the same problem as a single acute avulsion. Moisture, irritants, fungal infection, psoriasis and other skin conditions, medication effects, and systemic illness can contribute. Do not assume that glue, aggressive filing, or an over-the-counter antifungal is appropriate without identifying the cause. Arrange a routine medical assessment, especially if the separation persists, spreads to other nails, or is accompanied by skin changes, pain, or discharge.

A non-traumatic separation may need a different examination and treatment from a crush injury. Mention any recent injury, repeated wet work or chemical exposure, skin symptoms, and other affected nails when you seek care. That history helps the clinician decide whether the nail bed, surrounding skin, or another condition needs attention.

A practical monitoring checklist

  • Check that bleeding has stopped and that the digit remains warm, normally colored, and sensitive.
  • Keep the dressing clean and dry; replace it when wet, dirty, or according to clinical instructions.
  • Use protection that does not press on or pull the loose nail.
  • Each day, look for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pain, pus, or fever.
  • Do not test looseness by moving the nail and do not attempt home drainage.
  • Keep any scheduled review, even if the pain improves, when the nail bed was repaired or the digit was splinted.
  • Compare the nail’s position and the surrounding skin over time, rather than repeatedly lifting the edge to inspect underneath.

Frequently asked questions

Should I remove a nail that is partly hanging off?

No. Do not pull or rip it away. If only a tiny projecting edge is catching, NHS guidance allows conservative trimming back to the point where the nail remains attached. A substantially torn, displaced, or painful nail should be assessed instead.

Can I use nail glue, super glue, or tape to hold it down?

No. Glue is not a substitute for nail-bed repair and can trap contamination or interfere with examination. Do not tape the nail tightly or force it under the cuticle. Use a loose protective dressing only as needed.

How do I know whether I can treat it at home?

Home care is limited to bleeding that stops quickly, an intact nail that remains attached to the nail bed, and a finger or toe that is straight and normally shaped. If any one of those conditions is missing, contact a healthcare professional.

When should I seek urgent help?

Seek prompt assessment for a displaced or substantially avulsed nail, bleeding that will not stop, a bent or misshapen digit, a severe crush, numbness, or a nail that exposes a suspected nail-bed wound. Increasing redness, swelling, pain, pus, or fever also requires medical attention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I drain the dark blood under the nail myself?

No. Trephination should be decided and performed by a healthcare provider. A split or lifted nail may require nail-bed treatment rather than simple drainage, and an underlying fracture can be missed by home treatment.

Will the old nail fall off?

It may. MedlinePlus explains that a new nail often grows in and pushes the old nail off. Do not force that process. Protect the nail and follow instructions if a clinician has repaired or dressed the injury.

How long will a replacement nail take?

MedlinePlus estimates about 4–6 months for a new fingernail and about 12 months for a toenail. NHS guidance says an injured fingernail usually regrows within 6 months and a toenail can take up to 18 months. These are estimates, not deadlines.

Is a ridge or odd shape during regrowth normal?

Ridges, grooves, discoloration, or altered shape can occur while the nail grows and may improve as it advances. A lasting change is possible if the nail bed scarred. Persistent separation, pain, drainage, or worsening appearance merits review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if several nails are lifting without an accident?

Arrange a routine medical assessment. Gradual or multiple-nail separation can have causes such as infection, psoriasis, irritants, medication effects, or systemic illness and should not be treated as a single traumatic avulsion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I pull off a partially detached nail?

No. Pulling can enlarge the tear and injure the nail bed. Leave it in place; only a small projecting edge that is clearly unattached may be trimmed back to where the nail remains attached.

Can I glue the nail back on?

No. Household or cosmetic glue can trap contamination and interfere with examination or repair. Use a protective dressing instead and seek care when the nail is torn or displaced.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When is home care acceptable?

Only when bleeding stops quickly, the nail is not cut or torn and remains attached to the nail bed, and the finger or toe is straight and normally shaped.

When should I see a clinician?

Seek prompt assessment for a displaced or substantially torn nail, uncontrolled bleeding, a bent or misshapen digit, a significant crush, or increasing redness, swelling, pain, pus, or fever.

Can I pierce the nail to release blood?

No. Nail trephination should be performed only by a healthcare provider, who can also assess for nail-bed damage or fracture.

How long does regrowth take?

MedlinePlus estimates 4–6 months for a fingernail and about 12 months for a toenail. NHS guidance gives up to 6 months for fingernails and up to 18 months for toenails.

The Bottom Line

Do not pull, glue, or pierce a partially detached nail. Control bleeding, gently clean only minor surface dirt, protect the area, use cloth-wrapped ice and elevation for swelling, and seek prompt assessment if the nail is torn or displaced, the digit is deformed, bleeding persists, or infection signs develop.
