For a screenshot of an Ionic, Cordova, or PhoneGap app, run the app in the Android Emulator or iOS Simulator and capture the rendered device screen there. Use Android Emulator’s Take screenshot control or adb for Android; on Apple platforms use Simulator’s File > Save Screen Shot, xcrun simctl, or Xcode Device Hub. If the layout is wrong, inspect the app’s WebView first, then capture the corrected screen. A website screenshot API is useful for a hosted web version, but it does not replace a native emulator or device capture.
Choose the capture method that matches what you need to show
The right capture depends on whether you need a repeatable development screenshot, a view of actual device hardware, or an image saved by the app itself. Emulator and simulator captures are usually quickest to reproduce. A physical phone is the better check for hardware-specific rendering, operating-system chrome, safe areas, font appearance, and WebView behavior that a simulator may not reproduce.

Prepare a reproducible app state
A screenshot is only useful for comparison when the app and its display conditions are known. Build the commit and configuration you intend to document, navigate to the same route and state, and set the device profile and orientation before capturing. Where possible, remove transient loading indicators, animations, blinking carets, random data, and time-dependent content from the view.

- For responsive Ionic layouts, capture each relevant breakpoint or size class rather than assuming one device represents them all.
- Use a stable route and test account or fixture data when the page depends on login or backend state.
- Use live reload only if the simulator or device can reach the development server; a failed connection can make the result differ from the intended build.
Build and deploy with Ionic and Cordova
The Ionic Cordova commands provide a consistent route from web assets to a native simulator or device. The emulate command builds web assets, prepares the Cordova project, and invokes the platform’s native tooling. CLI flags can vary with the installed Ionic version, so check the help output for the version used by the project if a flag is rejected.

Run in an emulator or simulator
- From the project directory, run
ionic cordova emulate androidorionic cordova emulate ios. - If multiple targets are available, list them with
ionic cordova emulate android --listorionic cordova emulate ios --list, then select a target with--target, for exampleionic cordova emulate android --target=<target-name>. - For a development session, add
--livereloadonly when the target can access the development server:ionic cordova emulate android --livereload.
Build for a physical device
For a device build, use the relevant platform with the device option, such as ionic cordova build android --device or ionic cordova build ios --device. Deploy using the project’s normal device run workflow, then navigate to the exact screen you want. A physical-device screenshot is particularly useful when validating safe-area insets, real system bars, text rendering, or a platform-specific WebView issue.
Capture an Android screen
Use Android Studio Emulator
- Launch the app in the intended Android Emulator profile and navigate to the target state.
- Click Take screenshot in the Emulator toolbar.
- Review the image, then copy or save it. The documented default filename format is
Screenshot_yyyymmdd-hhmmss.png.
Automate with the Emulator command line
Android Emulator documentation also lists these screenshot commands:
screenrecord screenshot [destination-directory]adb emu screenrecord screenshot [destination-directory]
The emulator writes a timestamped PNG by default. Supply a destination directory when you want the output stored in a known location; use the syntax supported by the installed emulator and Android tooling.

Capture from a physical Android device
After deploying the app, use the device’s operating-system screenshot gesture or an available device capture command. For layout diagnosis, connect the phone to a computer with USB debugging enabled and inspect its WebView through Chrome DevTools. Connector type depends on the phone, so use a compatible data cable if the device’s USB connection is required.
Capture an iOS screen
Save from Simulator
- Start the app in the intended iOS Simulator and navigate to the screen.
- Choose File > Save Screen Shot.
- Use the saved image from the Mac desktop.
Capture from a script
With the intended simulator booted, run this in Terminal, substituting a destination filename:

The booted target refers to a booted simulator. If multiple simulators are involved, make sure the intended device is the one targeted before capturing.
Use Xcode Device Hub for simulated or physical Apple devices
- Run the app on the simulated or physical device in Device Hub.
- Navigate to the target layout.
- Click the Screenshot button below the device canvas.
- Find the resulting capture on the Mac desktop.
Apple documents Device Hub captures at the full resolution of the simulated or physical device. This makes it useful when the required artifact should reflect device resolution rather than a browser viewport.
Inspect the WebView when the layout is wrong
Do not try to fix a CSS or viewport issue by repeatedly recapturing the same broken screen. Inspect the rendered WebView, identify the geometry or style difference, make the correction, then capture again.
Android: Chrome DevTools
- Enable WebView debugging in the app’s native Android code.
- Connect the device or run the app in the emulator with Chrome available on the development computer.
- Open
chrome://inspectin Chrome. - Find the app’s debug-enabled WebView and click Inspect.
DevTools can inspect the WebView much like a remote browser tab. Check viewport dimensions, media-query matches, safe-area handling, computed styles, and the DOM before deciding whether the mismatch comes from CSS or the emulator/device configuration.
iOS and iPadOS: Safari Web Inspector
Booted simulators appear in Safari’s Develop menu automatically. For a physical device, enable Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced > Web Inspector, connect or pair it with the Mac, then select the app’s inspectable content from Safari’s Develop menu. Inspection setup is separate from taking the screenshot; use Simulator, Device Hub, or the device’s capture method for the final image.

Save a screenshot from inside a Cordova or PhoneGap app
If the requirement is for the app to save its own current screen, rather than for a developer to document a build from the outside, a Cordova screenshot plugin is a separate option. The cordova-plugin-screenshot project documents installation through the Cordova CLI and a method to capture the current screen to the phone. Its documented notes say iOS supports JPG only and Android uses the default WebView.

Do not assume plugin output is interchangeable with an emulator screenshot. Validate the plugin on the exact Cordova and WebView versions, Android storage behavior, iOS version, device, and output quality in your project. Platform behavior and compatibility can change independently of the app’s web code.

The screenshot is blank or shows a loading screen
- Confirm the app has finished loading the intended route before capture; a screenshot records the screen at the instant it is taken.
- For live reload, check that the target can reach the development server. Otherwise build and deploy the app without relying on that server.
- For a hosted web route, confirm it loads in a normal browser and does not require a local-only hostname or session unavailable to the capture service.
The layout differs between simulator and phone
- Compare the device profile, orientation, OS version, font scaling, viewport, and safe-area behavior.
- Inspect the WebView on the affected target, then capture that physical target if hardware rendering is the issue under investigation.
- Do not treat a simulator image as proof of how every physical device renders the app.
The Ionic command rejects a flag or target
Check ionic cordova emulate --help and the platform-specific command help for the installed CLI version. Use --list to see available targets, then select a listed target with --target. A target identifier from another machine or emulator configuration may not exist locally.
Chrome does not show the Android WebView
Verify that WebView debugging is enabled by the native app, that the app is running, and that the device or emulator is connected to the development computer. Then reload chrome://inspect and check for a debug-enabled WebView.

Boot the simulator, or on a physical device enable Web Inspector in Safari’s Advanced settings and connect or pair it with the Mac. Select the app’s inspectable content after it appears.

The Cordova plugin’s image format or saved file is unsuitable
Check the plugin’s platform-specific behavior on the exact target. The project documents JPG-only support on iOS and default-WebView use on Android; confirm storage permissions and file handling against the app’s current OS and plugin versions.
Keep capture performance and reliability predictable
For repeated documentation or regression captures, prefer a stable emulator or simulator profile, a deterministic route, and a fixed orientation. Scriptable capture with adb or simctl reduces manual variation, but does not eliminate differences caused by app state, OS version, fonts, or device configuration. Save the screenshot with its build and device metadata so a later comparison can reproduce the same conditions.
There is no documented comparative success rate or image-quality score for these methods. Choose based on the artifact needed: native-device evidence calls for emulator, simulator, Device Hub, or physical-device capture; WebView diagnosis calls for remote inspection; app-triggered saving calls for a validated plugin; hosted web-page capture can use an API.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture a PhoneGap screen using the same workflow as Cordova?
PhoneGap is based on Cordova-style projects, but plugin compatibility depends on the project’s actual platform and WebView versions. Validate any in-app screenshot plugin against those versions before relying on it.
Will a simulator screenshot include the phone’s physical bezel?
The documented capture paths save the device display image; they do not establish that a physical bezel is included. If the deliverable specifically needs a photo of the hardware, use a camera rather than a screen-capture command.
Can a website screenshot API capture an installed app’s private screen?
No. A website screenshot API captures a reachable web URL; it cannot reproduce an app’s native installed state, private session, or device chrome unless those are exposed as a web page.
