Chrome can select a rectangular part of a webpage through Gemini in Chrome, but Google’s documented workflow attaches that selection to a Gemini prompt rather than saving it as an image file. Open Gemini in Chrome, choose Add → Select from screen, drag around the page area, and adjust the selection if needed. If your goal is a reusable PNG, JPEG, or WebP file, use your operating system’s own screenshot utility or an automated screenshot service; Chrome’s Gemini documentation does not establish one universal save-to-file shortcut for every desktop platform.
First decide what “capture” should produce
People use “capture part of a webpage” to mean three different tasks. Choosing the right one prevents you from following a workflow that cannot produce the result you need.

Select part of a webpage for Gemini in Chrome
Google’s current Chrome Help workflow lets eligible desktop users draw a box around page content and include it in a Gemini conversation.

- Open the webpage in Chrome on a supported desktop computer.
- Open Gemini in Chrome. The entry point can vary by Chrome release and account, so use the Gemini control shown in your browser.
- In the Gemini side panel, select Add.
- Choose Select from screen.
- Drag a rectangle around the webpage area you want Gemini to examine. Include enough surrounding context for labels, charts, or controls to make sense.
- Submit your question in Gemini. Chrome attaches the selected content to that prompt automatically.
Adjusting a selection
You do not have to redraw everything when the first box is imperfect. Google documents that you can change the selection’s size or position, create overlapping selections, remove an individual selection, or clear all selections by closing the Gemini side panel. Press Escape to leave selection mode. Overlapping selections are useful when a diagram and its caption are separated by page spacing.
What this method does not promise
This is a context-sharing feature for Gemini. The official wording says the selected content is automatically attached to your Gemini prompt; it does not say Chrome downloads that rectangle as a standalone PNG, JPEG, or WebP. If you need an image attachment for a design review, bug report, or archive, use an image-capture workflow instead of assuming the Gemini selection is a file.
Check whether Gemini selection is available
Google lists all of the following conditions for selecting page content in Gemini in Chrome:
- You are 13 or older.
- You have access to Gemini in Chrome on desktop.
- You are in a country where the feature is supported.
- You use Chrome on a Chromebook Plus, Mac, or Windows computer.
These are eligibility conditions, not a guarantee for every account, organization, browser channel, or location. A managed computer may have Gemini disabled even when its operating system is supported. If Select from screen is missing, verify that Chrome is up to date, that you are signed in to an account with Gemini access, and that your administrator has not disabled the feature. Do not treat the absence of the menu as evidence that your webpage is unselectable.
Use Chrome’s visual-search selection instead
Chrome separately documents a way to select page content for visual search from the address-bar experience labeled Ask Google about this page. Open that experience, choose the visual-selection control, and draw over the part of the page you want to search. This is intended to find or identify visual information, not to create a screenshot file.
Google says this route depends on Google being your default search engine. Activity and history settings can also affect the suggestions or results you receive. If the visual-search option is unavailable, check Chrome’s search-engine setting and the account activity controls that govern suggestions.

When you need an actual image file
The documented Gemini and visual-search tools answer questions about a region, but neither is established here as a cross-platform “save selected area” command. For a one-off image, use the screenshot facility built into your operating system and select the area interactively. The exact keystroke and save dialog vary by Windows edition, macOS version, and ChromeOS release, so confirm the instructions for your platform rather than applying an unverified shortcut.
Prepare the page before capturing
- Scroll to the exact state you need; a cookie dialog, chat bubble, or sticky header can obscure the subject.
- Set the browser zoom and window size deliberately. Zoom changes the number of CSS pixels visible in the selection.
- Wait for fonts, images, charts, and lazy-loaded content to finish rendering.
- Close unrelated tabs or private information before sharing the capture.
- For a long page, capture separate logical sections or use a full-page tool; a viewport selection cannot include content that is not rendered.
Preserve quality and context
Prefer lossless PNG for text, diagrams, and UI screenshots. JPEG is smaller but can introduce compression around small type. Keep the page title or URL in your accompanying note when the image may be viewed out of context. If the page is responsive, record the viewport width because the same URL can lay out differently on a narrow phone-sized viewport and a desktop window.

Configure a precise partial capture
Capture one element
Identify a stable CSS selector such as a component ID or data attribute instead of a position-dependent selector. If the element is below the fold, enable full-page or the documented wait behavior so lazy content has time to load. A selector that matches several nodes may produce an unexpected result; make it unique and verify it after page redesigns.

Remove obstructions
Use hide-selector or custom CSS to suppress fixed headers, cookie layers, ads, and chat launchers. If the page requires a consent action before content appears, use the click-before-capture option, then hide the resulting overlay. Do not hide an element that supplies context you need in the final image.

Control timing
“Network idle” is useful for JavaScript applications that load data after the initial HTML. A selector wait is better when one known chart or panel signals readiness. A fixed delay is the fallback for animations or third-party widgets, but keep it only as long as necessary because it increases latency.
Match the reader’s viewport

Gemini in Chrome may not be enabled for your account, country, age group, device, or managed browser. Confirm the four eligibility conditions above and check with the administrator of a work or school profile.

The selection is attached, but there is no image to download
That is the documented behavior: the region is context for a Gemini prompt. Use your operating system’s screenshot utility for a file, or call a screenshot API for repeatable output.
Visual search does not appear
Chrome’s address-bar visual-search route requires Google as the default search engine and can be affected by activity and history settings. Correct those settings or use Gemini selection when your objective is analysis rather than search.
The automated image is blank or incomplete
Wait for a selector or network idle, enable lazy-image loading or full-page capture, and check whether authentication, geolocation, or a consent action is required. Inspect X-Page-Verdict and the HTTP status before treating the file as valid.

Record the response’s X-Billed header and your selected cache TTL. A cache hit is not billed, but a changed URL, parameters, or expired TTL can require a fresh capture.
Security, privacy, and reliability checks
- Never place an API key in client-side JavaScript, a public image URL, or a committed repository. Keep it in a server-side secret store.
- Review whether the page contains personal, confidential, or account-only information before sending a URL or credentials to any capture service.
- Use signed links for public
<img>tags when you need controlled access rather than exposing the capture endpoint directly. - For recurring jobs, save the URL, viewport, selector, wait condition, format, verdict, billing header, and timestamp with each artifact.
- Retry transient network failures with backoff, but do not blindly retry authorization failures, CAPTCHA responses, or deterministic selector errors.
Chrome’s screenshot restrictions in managed environments
Google enterprise documentation describes screenshot prevention for managed users and browsers with a Chrome Enterprise Premium license. This is an administrator-controlled policy, not a consumer capture instruction. If a screenshot command is blocked on a work device, ask the administrator whether policy is responsible instead of trying to bypass it.
