Use your platform’s built-in capture shortcut. On Windows, press Windows + Shift + S and select a rectangle, freeform shape, window or full screen. On Mac, press Shift + Command + 4 and drag around the area. For a webpage that extends below the screen, use Edge’s Screenshot command or Firefox’s Save full page. These methods copy or save an image without installing software.
Capture part of your screen on Windows
Windows 11 and supported Windows editions include Snipping Tool. It can capture the entire display, one window, or only the region you draw.
- Arrange the desktop so the content you need is visible.
- Press Windows + Shift + S. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool toolbar appears.
- Choose a mode: Rectangle for a box, Freeform for an irregular outline, Window for one application window, or Full screen for the whole display.
- For Rectangle or Freeform, drag over the target and release. Window and Full screen capture immediately.
- A notification opens the result in Snipping Tool. From there, annotate with the pen or highlighter, crop it, copy it, save it, or share it.
The capture is placed on the clipboard automatically. Press Ctrl + C in Snipping Tool to copy again, or Ctrl + S to save. Microsoft describes the utility as: “The Windows Snipping Tool captures all or part of your PC screen.”

Keep a menu open with a delay
If opening the snipping overlay would close the menu you want to show, open Snipping Tool from the Start menu, select the delay control, and choose 1–5 seconds. Open the menu during the countdown, then complete the selection.

Extract words instead of saving a picture
After a capture, choose Text actions to copy recognized text. Microsoft says this OCR processing is performed locally on the device. Review the extracted text before sharing it; OCR can misread small type, unusual fonts and low-contrast text.
Capture a selected area on a Mac
- Press Shift + Command + 4. The pointer changes to a crosshair.
- Click and hold the mouse or trackpad button, then drag around the area.
- Release to capture. By default, macOS saves the image to the desktop.
- Click the thumbnail that appears briefly in the corner to edit, mark up or crop the image.
Press Esc before releasing the pointer to cancel. While dragging, hold Space to move the selected rectangle without changing its dimensions. To copy rather than save, hold Control while invoking the shortcut, or open the thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard.
Use the Screenshot app for timers and output controls
Press Shift + Command + 5 to open the Screenshot app. Its Options menu lets you set a timer, choose a destination, keep or hide the floating thumbnail, and show or hide the pointer. On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, the format choices include SDR/PNG and HDR/HEIF. The available format choices depend on the Mac and macOS version.
Capture part of a webpage in Microsoft Edge
Edge’s Screenshot command captures a selected region or a complete long page, including content below the visible viewport.

- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- Open the webpage in Edge.
- Right-click the page and choose Screenshot, or press Ctrl + Shift + S.
- Drag over the section you want, or choose the full-page option when the page continues below the screen.
- Use the pen or touch tools for markup.
- Choose Copy to put the result on the clipboard or Save to download it.
Edge describes the feature as capturing “a full page or a selected area—including long or moving webpages—then add comments or markup using pen or touch before copying or saving your screenshot.” A full-page capture is generally preferable to stitching several viewport screenshots because it preserves one continuous document.
When Edge captures the wrong content
- Wait for images, charts and embedded frames to finish loading before starting.
- Close sticky banners or expand collapsed sections if they are part of the content you need.
- If a page uses an internal scroll panel, scroll that panel to the desired position first; full-page capture may follow the document rather than the nested panel.
- For a moving page, pause animation where the site allows it, then capture.
Capture a webpage section in Firefox
- Open the page in Firefox.
- Right-click an empty area and select Take Screenshot. Alternatively use Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + S on macOS.
- Drag a custom region, or let Firefox highlight a page part automatically and click the highlighted element.
- Choose Save full page for the complete document or Save visible for only the current viewport.
- Click Download to save a PNG in Firefox’s download folder, or Copy to place it on the clipboard.
Firefox can move the screenshot crosshair with the arrow keys. Its documentation notes that this movement does not work on Wayland. Firefox also provides controls for technical and interaction-data collection; its screenshot telemetry does not include the URL or image details.
Choose the method that matches the job
| What you need | Best built-in choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A rectangle or irregular area anywhere in Windows | Snipping Tool | Rectangle and Freeform modes select exactly the region you draw. |
| One application window on Windows | Snipping Tool Window mode | Captures the selected window directly. |
| A selected region on macOS | Shift + Command + 4 | The crosshair gives precise control. |
| A section of a webpage in Edge | Edge Screenshot | Supports selected-area capture, full-page capture and markup. |
| A webpage longer than the screen | Edge full-page or Firefox Save full page | Captures content beyond the visible viewport. |
| Clipboard-first sharing | Snipping Tool, Control-plus-Mac shortcut or Firefox Copy | Each has a documented copy workflow. |
| A menu that disappears when you start capturing | Snipping Tool delay or Screenshot app timer | A countdown gives you time to open the menu. |
Scrolling and full-page captures: what can go wrong
A scrolling screenshot is not the same as selecting a larger rectangle. The browser must repeatedly render and join content as it moves down the document. Lazy-loaded images may appear only after you scroll, fixed headers can be repeated, and animated or personalized sections may differ between segments.
Recommended Free Tools
- Let the page finish loading before starting.
- Scroll through important sections once so lazy images and charts have a chance to load.
- Use a browser’s full-page command rather than manually stitching images when continuity matters.
- Check the saved image from top to bottom for duplicated headers, missing frames or blank areas.
If you need one element rather than the entire page, select just that element in Edge or Firefox when the browser identifies it. Otherwise, capture the smallest useful region and crop it before distribution.

Privacy, accessibility and protected content
Minimize what you share
Select only the necessary region. Crop account numbers, addresses, private messages and browser tabs before sending the file. Add an annotation or opaque mark rather than relying on a temporary selection highlight. Remember that screenshots can preserve information hidden outside the visible focus, such as notification previews or another monitor’s content when using full-screen mode.
Keyboard and pointer considerations
All four workflows have keyboard shortcuts. On Windows, use the delay when a menu must remain open. On macOS, the Screenshot app can show or hide the pointer and provide a timer. In Firefox, arrow-key crosshair movement can help with precise selection, except on Wayland sessions.
Why a screenshot may be blocked
Some protected applications prevent capture. Apple specifically notes that some apps, including Apple TV, may not allow screenshots of their windows. A black or blank result can therefore be an application restriction rather than a shortcut problem. Do not attempt to bypass access controls; use an approved export or sharing feature instead.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. A GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Options for production captures
ScreenshotNeo supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, a single element selected by CSS selector, dark mode, 12 device presets or any viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size, margins, landscape and page ranges, HTML/CSS-to-image rendering, custom CSS and JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, and transparent backgrounds.
For network and identity control, you can block ads, trackers, requests or resource types; set custom headers, cookies, a user agent, Authorization, timezone and geolocation; resize images; cache with a TTL you choose; create signed links for public <img> tags; submit asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks; capture up to 100 URLs per call; query usage; and use the OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Troubleshooting checklist
The shortcut does nothing
- On Windows, confirm the Windows key is not disabled by a gaming-mode utility and launch Snipping Tool from Start to test it.
- On macOS, verify that screenshot permissions are enabled in System Settings under Privacy & Security, then Keyboard Shortcuts.
- In a browser, use the right-click command if another extension has claimed the shortcut.
The saved image is blank or incomplete
- Wait for the page and images to finish loading.
- Retry after disabling a blocking extension or private browsing restriction.
- For protected applications, use the application’s export function; some windows cannot be captured.
- For full-page browser shots, check whether the missing content is inside an embedded frame or nested scroll area.
The wrong monitor or window was captured
- Use Rectangle or Window mode instead of Full screen.
- Move the target window to the active display before invoking the shortcut.
- On macOS, drag only the required region and use the Screenshot app’s destination controls to avoid losing the file.
The screenshot is too large to send
Crop first, then export a format suited to the content. PNG preserves sharp text and interface edges; JPEG is usually smaller for photographs. If you automate captures, request an appropriate output format, viewport and image size rather than resizing a huge full-page file afterward.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture only one monitor on a multi-monitor setup?
Yes. On Windows, use Window or Rectangle mode; on Mac, drag the region on the desired display rather than selecting the entire screen.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What is the difference between a screenshot and a screen recording?
A screenshot is one still image. A recording captures time-based activity; use the Screenshot app or another approved recorder when motion is essential.
Why does a full-page capture have repeated headers?
Sticky headers are rendered in each scrolling segment. Use a selected-region capture, hide the fixed header where the browser permits, or adjust the page before capturing.
Can a screenshot include content behind a login?
Only when you are already authorized and the capture method can access that session. Do not share credentials or bypass an access control.
