Use a rectangular screen selection around the PDF area you need. On Windows 10 or 11, press Windows+Shift+S, choose Rectangle, and drag over the page. On a Mac, press Shift-Command-4 and drag, or use Preview’s File > Take Screenshot > From Selection. In Adobe Acrobat Reader, choose Edit > More > Take A Snapshot, drag a rectangle, then paste the image where you need it.
The best method depends on whether you want a saved file or clipboard image, whether the PDF is already open in Acrobat, and whether you need annotation or OCR. The steps below cover each case, including fixes when copying is restricted or the result is blurry.
Choose the right capture method

Capture part of a PDF on Windows 10 or 11
Use a rectangular snip
- Open the PDF and scroll until the page area you need is visible.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The Snipping Tool capture overlay appears.
- Select Rectangle in the capture controls.
- Drag from one corner of the desired PDF region to the opposite corner, then release.
- Click the notification or open Snipping Tool to inspect the capture.
- Use Ctrl+C to copy it again, or choose Save (or press Ctrl+S) to write an image file.
The rectangle includes everything inside the selection: PDF text, page background, margins, and any visible viewer controls. Move the PDF window or hide side panels first if you want a cleaner crop.
Annotate, crop, or extract text
Snipping Tool can add annotations and crop the result after capture. Its text actions can also recognize words in the image, which is useful when you need text from a diagram or a scanned page but cannot select the original PDF text. OCR output should be checked against the page, especially for small type, columns, or mathematical symbols.

Include a temporary menu or tooltip
If the part you need appears only after a menu opens, start Snipping Tool and set a delay before making the rectangle. Open the PDF menu during the delay, then complete the selection while the transient interface is visible.
Capture part of a PDF on a Mac
Fast system-wide shortcut
- Open the PDF in Preview, a browser, or another viewer and position the required area on screen.
- Press Shift-Command-4. The pointer changes to a crosshair.
- Drag across the PDF region you want and release.
- Find the resulting image on the desktop by default, or use Screenshot settings to choose another location.
This method works for any visible application window, so it is useful when the PDF is not open in Preview. The selection is a bitmap; links, selectable text, and document layers are not retained.
Use Preview’s PDF-native selection
- Open the PDF in Preview.
- Choose File > Take Screenshot > From Selection.
- Drag across the required area and release.
- Preview opens the result as an image, where you can mark it up before saving or copying it.
Preview’s command is convenient when you want the result immediately in an image window rather than relying on the desktop save location.

On macOS Mojave 10.14 or later, press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot app. It provides controls for selecting a portion, window, or entire screen and for changing where captures are saved. Use the portion option when you need to adjust the capture workflow without memorizing the crosshair shortcut.

Capture a selected PDF area in Adobe Acrobat Reader
- Open the document in Acrobat Reader and display the page area you need.
- Choose Edit > More > Take A Snapshot.
- Drag a rectangle around the desired PDF content.
- Switch to the destination application and paste with Ctrl+V on Windows or Command+V on macOS.
Acrobat’s Snapshot command copies the selected area as an image, so it is a good choice when the PDF is already open and you need to paste a clean crop into an email, document, presentation, or graphics editor.
When Snapshot is unavailable
Some PDFs restrict copying. Check the document’s security or permissions settings before troubleshooting the application. If copying is disallowed, Acrobat may disable Snapshot or refuse to place an image on the clipboard. A system screen capture can still capture what your account is allowed to view, subject to your organization’s policies and applicable copyright or privacy rules.
Make the screenshot readable
Set the view before selecting
- Zoom until body text is legible but the complete section still fits in the window.
- Use a single-page or continuous-page view according to the layout you need.
- Close bookmarks, thumbnails, comments, and toolbars that would otherwise appear in the crop.
- For a chart or table, include its title, axis labels, legend, and page number so the image remains understandable out of context.
Choose a suitable image format
Use PNG when text and line art must remain sharp. JPEG can produce smaller files for photographic pages but may introduce compression around small type. WebP is useful when your destination accepts it and file size matters. If you need to edit the result repeatedly, keep the original capture rather than repeatedly recompressing a JPEG.
Remember what a screenshot cannot do
A screenshot records pixels, not the PDF’s underlying text, links, bookmarks, form fields, or accessibility structure. Keep the original PDF alongside the image when readers may need to search, copy, or verify the source.

Capture content that does not fit in one screen
The shortcuts above select only the visible screen area. For a long section, zoom out until it fits, capture adjacent portions separately, or use the PDF application’s export and print features to create a document or page image instead of a screen crop. Separate captures are often clearer than one tiny, zoomed-out image. Name them in reading order, such as report-page-04-top.png and report-page-04-bottom.png.
Privacy, permissions, and sensitive documents
- Check that account numbers, personal data, comments, and hidden side panels are outside the rectangle.
- Do not paste a capture containing confidential content into an unapproved cloud service or chat.
- Respect the PDF owner’s copying restrictions and your organization’s handling rules.
- Delete temporary captures from the desktop or clipboard history when the document is sensitive.
Troubleshooting
The shortcut does nothing on Windows
Press the Windows key and Shift together before pressing S, then release all keys and try again. If another application has remapped the shortcut, open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and choose a new capture manually. Confirm that the PDF window is visible rather than minimized or covered.
The Mac capture is saved somewhere unexpected
Open the Screenshot controls with Shift-Command-5 and inspect the save-location setting. The default is the desktop, but it can be changed. Preview’s From Selection command instead opens the image in Preview first.

Increase the PDF zoom before drawing the rectangle and recapture. Avoid enlarging a small screenshot after the fact; that scales existing pixels and cannot restore detail. On a high-density display, capture at the largest practical on-screen size.

Viewer controls are in the crop
Hide sidebars and toolbars, move the pointer away, and wait for hover controls to disappear. Then redraw the rectangle. Snipping Tool’s delay can help when a control appears only after a click.
Acrobat Snapshot is greyed out or pastes nothing
Inspect the PDF’s security permissions to see whether copying is restricted. If it is, use a permitted screen capture of the visible page or ask the document owner for an unrestricted copy. Also test pasting into a simple image-capable application to rule out a destination that accepts text but not bitmap data.
The result contains a blank page or black area
Wait for the PDF page to finish rendering, scroll slightly, and capture again. Hardware-accelerated viewers can occasionally redraw while a selection is in progress; switching to Preview, Acrobat, or the system screenshot overlay can avoid that viewer-specific behavior.

Does a PDF screenshot preserve clickable links or selectable text?
No. A screenshot is a bitmap image. Keep the original PDF when readers need to follow links, search, copy text, or use accessibility features.
Which format is best for a cropped page containing mostly text?
PNG normally keeps small type and straight lines cleaner than JPEG. Choose JPEG when photographic content and a smaller file are more important, or WebP when your destination supports it.
Can I capture a PDF section that is behind a login?
Desktop tools can capture content you are authorized to view. For an automated URL capture, the service must be given the required authentication headers or cookies, and you should confirm that automated access is permitted.
