WinAppDriver and standard WebDriver do not document a switch that limits a full-desktop screenshot to the primary monitor. If you need only the application under test, capture its window or an element instead. If you need desktop pixels, capture the desktop and crop the image to the primary display’s bounds, queried at runtime. That distinction is why GetScreenshot() can include another monitor.
Why does GetScreenshot include my other monitor?
A desktop or root-session screenshot can represent more than the application window: it may include the virtual desktop across multiple displays. A WinAppDriver Q&A addressing this exact issue recommends cropping the resulting screenshot or taking an application screenshot instead: the two-monitor WinAppDriver screenshot discussion.
The cited WinAppDriver feature list documents an element screenshot endpoint, GET /session/:sessionId/element/:id/screenshot, but does not list a primary-monitor-only option for desktop capture. Selenium likewise documents a screenshot of the current browsing context, separately from window positioning; positioning a window on the primary monitor is not the same as selecting one monitor for a desktop screenshot. Choose application capture or desktop capture and crop
| Approach | Best for | What appears | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Application or element screenshot | A test asserting or recording a particular app window or UI element | The target application surface or element, rather than unrelated monitor pixels | It does not provide a full desktop view. The desired target must be represented by an application session or element. |
| Full desktop screenshot followed by a crop | Evidence that must reflect a region of the desktop, including overlays when needed | The full capture initially, then only the selected display rectangle in the saved crop | More image-processing work; coordinate mapping, monitor arrangement and DPI scaling must be handled correctly. |
Window or element capture is generally the simpler way to exclude another monitor. Cropping is the practical fallback when the desktop itself is what you need. Cropping does not make an occluded application visible: it selects pixels from the screenshot you already captured.
Popups and overlays change the choice
Microsoft’s newer UI Automation CLI distinguishes window capture from screen capture. Window capture targets the application surface; screen capture includes popups, flyouts and overlays. Use a screen capture when those elements are part of the evidence, and a window or element capture when you want to exclude surrounding desktop content. The distinction is described in Microsoft’s UI Automation CLI documentation. If you choose desktop capture, crop afterward if only the primary display belongs in the output.
How to capture only the primary monitor with WinAppDriver
- Decide what the test needs. If the target is an app surface or element, use the application session and the relevant screenshot method. WinAppDriver documents an element screenshot endpoint at
GET /session/:sessionId/element/:id/screenshot; the endpoint is scoped to an element, not a monitor. - For desktop evidence, take the ordinary screenshot. Save the returned image bytes before attempting to crop them. Microsoft’s repository includes test code that saves a
GetScreenshot()result as PNG; the normal call itself is not a primary-display filter. - Query display geometry at runtime. Obtain the primary display’s bounds in the Windows test process. Do not assume its top-left is
(0, 0), that secondary displays sit to the right, or that every display uses the same scale. - Map display bounds into screenshot coordinates. Determine how the screenshot library represents the virtual desktop and account for any origin offset and DPI scaling. Intersect the mapped primary-display rectangle with the image rectangle.
- Crop, save and log the result. Save the cropped image, and record the reported monitor bounds, screenshot dimensions and DPI-awareness mode so a misplaced or empty crop can be diagnosed.
- Test the actual display arrangements you support. Include secondary displays to the left (negative desktop coordinates), portrait orientation and mixed DPI settings if those occur in your test environment.
The crop step is an implementation pattern, not a universal coordinate recipe. Windows can place a secondary display at negative coordinates, and mixed DPI or portrait orientation changes rectangle dimensions. Your display API’s coordinate space and the screenshot library’s image space must agree before the rectangle can be used.

Illustrative C# crop pattern
This example shows the basic flow using Selenium’s screenshot bytes, a Windows primary-display bounds query and ImageSharp. It is deliberately not presented as a drop-in coordinate conversion for every setup: the mapping between desktop coordinates and screenshot pixels must be verified for your driver, image and DPI-awareness mode.
using System.Drawing;
using OpenQA.Selenium;
using SixLabors.ImageSharp;
using SixLabors.ImageSharp.PixelFormats;
using SixLabors.ImageSharp.Processing;
using System.Windows.Forms;
var shot = ((ITakesScreenshot)driver).GetScreenshot();
using var full = Image.Load<Rgba32>(shot.AsByteArray);
var primary = Screen.PrimaryScreen.Bounds;
// This direct mapping is valid only when the screenshot's pixel origin,
// scale and dimensions correspond to these display bounds.
var crop = Rectangle.Intersect(
new Rectangle(0, 0, full.Width, full.Height),
new Rectangle(primary.Left, primary.Top, primary.Width, primary.Height));
if (crop.Width <= 0 || crop.Height <= 0)
throw new InvalidOperationException(
"Primary monitor is outside screenshot bounds; map desktop coordinates to image pixels first.");
using var onlyPrimary = full.Clone(ctx => ctx.Crop(crop));
onlyPrimary.Save("primary.png");
The Screen.PrimaryScreen.Bounds query requires a Windows desktop test process and the relevant Windows Forms reference. The image calls assume ImageSharp packages are installed. In production, replace the direct rectangle use if the screenshot has a different origin or scale; otherwise the crop may be shifted, clipped or empty. The exact image-library APIs can also vary by package version.
Can Selenium capture only one display?
The Selenium documentation describes a screenshot for the current browsing context. It also covers window positioning, including placement at the top-left of the primary monitor, but does not document a desktop screenshot parameter for choosing a monitor. A browser window positioned on the primary display and a screenshot of the entire multi-monitor desktop are different operations.

For a browser test, capture the current page or target element when that is the evidence you need. If your automation is instead capturing the screen or virtual desktop through a separate mechanism, apply the same runtime-bounds-and-crop approach. The Selenium language binding may change how you save or decode a screenshot, but it does not create a documented primary-monitor selector.
Coordinate and DPI edge cases to check
- Primary display not at the image origin: A monitor layout can place displays at negative coordinates. Do not crop using guessed offsets.
- Mixed scaling: Windows display bounds and screenshot pixels may not share a one-to-one scale. Verify the mapping rather than assuming dimensions match.
- Portrait or differently sized monitors: The primary rectangle can have dimensions unlike the secondary display or a landscape assumption.
- Empty intersection: If the mapped primary rectangle does not overlap the image, stop and diagnose the coordinate transform; do not save a misleading empty crop.
- Overlays matter: A window or element capture may exclude popups and flyouts. Choose screen capture only if those are part of the desired evidence, then crop if needed.
- Window position mistaken for monitor selection: Moving a browser window to the primary monitor does not, by itself, prove that a desktop screenshot is restricted to that display.
Troubleshooting a primary-monitor crop
The saved image still contains the other monitor
Check that the saved file is the cropped image rather than the original screenshot, and that the crop rectangle was built from the primary display rather than the full virtual desktop. Log the input image size and bounds before saving.
The crop is blank, clipped or shifted
Do not assume display coordinates equal image-pixel coordinates. Check the virtual desktop origin, negative monitor positions and DPI scaling, then map the primary display rectangle into the screenshot’s coordinate system before intersecting and cropping.

A popup or flyout is missing
Use screen capture if the overlay itself is required evidence. Application-window capture targets the app surface and may not include separate popups or overlays, as Microsoft’s UI Automation CLI documentation explains.
The application screenshot has the wrong scope
Confirm that the session or element represents the surface you intended to capture. An element screenshot is scoped to that element, while a browsing-context screenshot is scoped to the current browser context; neither should be treated as a full desktop capture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe code does not compile with the image package
Image-loading, cropping and save method signatures depend on the library and version in your project. Keep the sequence—decode bytes, map and intersect bounds, crop, save—but adapt the calls to the installed package’s API.
