Use a rectangular or selected-area capture, not a full-desktop shortcut. On Windows, press Windows + Shift + S, choose Rectangle, and drag around the monitor you want. On macOS, press Shift + Command + 4 and drag across one display, or open Shift + Command + 5 and choose Capture Selected Portion. These methods keep the second monitor out of the image. Use a window capture instead when you need only one application.
Choose the capture scope first
With two monitors, the operating system treats the displays as one extended desktop. A full-screen command can therefore produce a canvas containing both screens. Decide which boundary you need before pressing a shortcut:

|---|---|---|
| Everything visible on one physical monitor | Rectangle or selected-area capture | A manually bounded image of that display only |
| One application, regardless of its monitor | Window capture | The app window, without the rest of the desktop |
| Both monitors intentionally | Full-screen capture | The combined desktop |
| A file you can edit | Built-in capture editor | Annotation, cropping, copying and saving controls |
| An image placed directly in another app | Clipboard destination | No intermediate file is required |
The key distinction is scope: select a rectangle that stops at the target display’s edges, or select the application window on that display.
Windows 10 and Windows 11: capture one monitor
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool supports freeform, rectangular, window, full-screen and video snips. The quickest isolated-monitor workflow is its rectangular snip.

Step-by-step rectangular capture
- Move the pointer onto the monitor you want to capture. This makes it easier to begin at the correct display edge.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. A capture overlay appears at the top of the desktop.
- Select Rectangle if it is not already selected.
- Place the crosshair at one corner of the target monitor. Drag to the opposite corner, staying inside the display’s visible boundaries.
- Release the mouse button. Windows copies the snip to the clipboard and shows a Snipping Tool notification.
- Click the notification to open the editor. From there you can annotate, crop, copy again, save, or share the image.
When displays have different scaling or resolutions, the seam may not be a straight horizontal line in the virtual desktop. Follow the visible edges of the monitor you are capturing rather than assuming both screens have identical dimensions.
Capture one application window
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- Choose Window in the overlay.
- Move over the application on the desired monitor. Snipping Tool highlights the detected window.
- Click the highlighted window, then use the notification to edit or save.
Window mode is safer than drawing a rectangle when the app is maximized, because it excludes neighboring desktop areas. It also avoids accidentally including part of the second display at a monitor seam.
Capture a menu or tooltip that disappears
Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu, select its delay control, and choose a delay from 1 to 5 seconds. Set up the menu or tooltip during the countdown, then let the rectangular or window snip run. The delay is useful for context menus, hover states and menus that close as soon as you press a shortcut.

Why Print Screen is usually wrong for this job
Print Screen creates a full-screen image in the clipboard. On an extended two-monitor desktop, that can include both displays, so it is not the appropriate shortcut when the second monitor must be excluded. Use Windows + Shift + S and define the boundary yourself.
macOS: capture one display
macOS provides shortcuts for the entire desktop, a selected rectangle, and a Screenshot app with additional controls. For a single monitor, use a selected area or a window capture.
Selected-area capture with Shift + Command + 4
- Press Shift + Command + 4. The pointer changes to a crosshair.
- Move the crosshair to a corner of the display you want.
- Press and hold the mouse or trackpad button, then drag to the opposite corner.
- Release. macOS saves the screenshot to the desktop by default.
- Click the thumbnail that briefly appears to mark up or crop it, or wait for the file to finish saving.
Drag along the monitor’s visible top, bottom and side edges. If the displays use different scaling, use the actual screen boundaries rather than trying to match pixel dimensions.
Use the Screenshot app for a timer or destination
- Press Shift + Command + 5.
- Choose Capture Selected Portion and drag the rectangle over one monitor.
- Open Options to set a timer and choose a save location.
- Click Capture.
The same toolbar also offers full-screen and window modes. Choose full screen only when including both displays is intentional.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Capture one application window
- Press Shift + Command + 4.
- Press the Space bar. The pointer changes to a camera.
- Move over the application window and click it.
- Hold Option while clicking if you want to exclude the window shadow.
This captures the app rather than the monitor, so the second display is excluded even when the window is not maximized.
Save to a file or copy to the Clipboard
macOS saves screenshots to the desktop by default. Add Control to the shortcut—for example, Control + Shift + Command + 4—to copy the result to the Clipboard instead of creating a file. The Clipboard workflow is convenient for pasting into email, chat, documents or an image editor.
How to get exact boundaries on mixed displays
Start and finish inside the target screen
At the seam between monitors, a one-pixel error can include a strip of the neighboring display. Begin at a corner that is clearly inside the target screen, drag past the opposite corner, and inspect the preview before saving. If the target monitor has a menu bar, taskbar or dock, include it deliberately rather than trimming it by accident.
Account for different scaling and arrangements
Displays may be arranged side by side, vertically, or with one screen offset above the other. A rectangle follows the on-screen coordinate space, not necessarily the physical bezel outline. If the operating system’s display arrangement leaves an offset region, avoid dragging through empty desktop space; select only the visible monitor area.
Choose a window when the monitor contains unrelated content
A selected-area image records everything inside its rectangle, including notifications, wallpapers and other windows. Window capture records only the application and is preferable for bug reports or documentation that must not expose other content.
Troubleshooting a two-monitor capture
The image contains both monitors
You used a full-screen command such as Print Screen, Windows full-screen snip, Shift + Command + 3, or the full-screen option in Screenshot. Repeat with Windows + Shift + S and Rectangle on Windows, or Shift + Command + 4 / Capture Selected Portion on macOS.
The wrong monitor was captured
Cancel the selection and begin with the pointer clearly over the intended display. On macOS, move the crosshair to the target monitor before pressing and dragging. On Windows, move the pointer there before opening the overlay, then verify the rectangle’s edges before releasing.

Mixed display scaling, an offset monitor arrangement, or starting on the seam can shift the selection. Redo the drag using visible corners, keep the pointer inside the target screen at the start, and check the preview at 100 percent before saving.
An application is black or blank
Some applications restrict window screenshots. Apple specifically notes that certain apps, including Apple TV, may not allow window captures. Try capturing a selected area instead, if the content is permitted, or use the application’s own export function. Do not attempt to bypass content protection.
You cannot find the saved file
On Windows, open the Snipping Tool notification to save explicitly. On macOS, check the desktop unless you changed the Screenshot app’s save location in Options. If you used Control with a macOS shortcut, look in the Clipboard rather than for a new file.

Preserve readable text
Capture at the monitor’s native display scale when possible. Avoid enlarging a low-resolution crop after the fact; if you need a close-up, capture the application window or a smaller rectangle at native size. For documentation, add annotations in Snipping Tool or the macOS thumbnail editor rather than repeatedly recompressing the image.

A monitor rectangle can include notifications, account names, tabs, messages or another person’s work. Close or hide unrelated windows, disable notifications temporarily, and inspect all four edges before sending the file. Window capture reduces exposure but does not remove sensitive data inside the app itself.
Make recurring captures consistent
Use the same monitor arrangement, scaling and window size for each capture. Prefer window mode for application screenshots and a documented rectangle for whole-display screenshots. Record whether the destination is a file or Clipboard so teammates know where to look.
Or skip the browser setup
If what you really need is a screenshot of a web page—not the physical monitor around your browser—ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one request. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
See the complete parameter list and authentication details in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Here is a direct cURL request:

r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
For automation, options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper sizes and page ranges, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture only the monitor where my mouse pointer is?
The pointer location helps you begin on the correct display, but the capture is determined by the rectangle or window you select. Verify the boundary before releasing.
Recommended Free Tools
How do I capture one monitor while leaving the other active?
Use a rectangular or selected-area snip. It does not turn off, lock, or change the second monitor; it simply records the selected region.
What format should I use for a screenshot?
Use PNG for interface text and sharp edges, JPEG for smaller photographic files, and WebP when your destination supports it. The built-in tools normally choose the format for you when saving.
