For one complete page in desktop Chrome, open DevTools, press Ctrl+Shift+P ( ⌘+Shift+P on Mac), search for Capture full-page screenshot, and run it. Chrome saves an image that extends beyond the visible viewport. Use Print to PDF when selectable text matters, Chrome Headless for repeatable jobs, or an extension for a one-click workflow. These methods capture one webpage; capturing every URL in an entire site requires a separate crawl or batch process.
Choose the right capture route
| Rank | Route | Best for | Important behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ScreenshotNeo API | Automated, clean captures from code or AI agents | Consent banners, popups and chat widgets are removed before capture; only clean shots are billed. |
| 2 | DevTools full-page screenshot | A fast, no-install image | Built into Chrome and captures content beyond the viewport. |
| 3 | Print to PDF | Searchable or printable records | Selectable text and natural page breaks; print CSS can change the appearance. |
| 4 | Chrome Headless | Scripts, regression checks and repeatable jobs | Command-line flags produce screenshot or PDF files; viewport settings affect the result. |
| 5 | Full-page extension | One-click scrolling and export | Convenient, but permissions, page structure and extension updates affect reliability. |
For the cleanest one-off image, start with DevTools. Choose PDF for a document, Headless for automation, and an extension when you need a toolbar button or annotation workflow.
Capture a full-page image with Chrome DevTools
Step-by-step
- Open the target webpage in desktop Chrome and let the visible content finish loading.
- Open DevTools with Menu > More tools > Developer tools. You can also use F12 or the platform shortcut.
- Open the DevTools Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows/Linux or ⌘+Shift+P on macOS.
- Type Capture full-page screenshot into the command search.
- Run that command, not the similarly named viewport, area or node commands. Chrome renders content below the current viewport and downloads the resulting image.
Verify the result
- Open the downloaded image and inspect the bottom, side edges and any repeated header.
- Check sections that load only when scrolled into view. A lazy image or embedded frame may need a second capture after the page has initialized.
- If the page uses a nested scroll panel, scroll that panel separately before capturing; a browser-level full-page command cannot always expand an independently scrolling element.
When DevTools is the best choice
This is the practical default for a single image because it requires no extension and preserves the page’s screen styling. It is not a site crawler: one command captures the currently open URL, not every page linked from it.
Save the whole page as a PDF
Interactive print flow
- Open the page in Chrome.
- Choose Menu > Print, or press Ctrl+P ( ⌘+P on Mac).
- In the destination/printer list, choose Save to PDF.
- Set pages, paper size, orientation, margins and scale as needed, then save.
PDF is preferable when readers must search, copy or print the content. It naturally divides a long document into pages, but print styles can hide elements, change colors or rearrange columns compared with the screen view. Review the first and last pages before sharing.

Headless PDF output
Chrome Headless can print a URL without opening a window:
chrome --headless --print-to-pdf=page.pdf https://example.com
The DevTools Protocol Page.printToPDF method prints the whole document when no page range is supplied. In unattended jobs, wait for the page’s data to load and inspect the generated PDF because authentication, delayed scripts and print CSS can change what appears.
Automate captures with Chrome Headless
Screenshot command
Chrome for Developers documents the --screenshot flag for writing an image file:
chrome --headless --screenshot=page.png --window-size=1440,900 https://example.com
Use the Chrome executable name installed on your operating system (for example, a platform-specific Chrome or Chromium binary). The window size controls the rendered viewport, so choose it deliberately and verify whether the page’s length, lazy content and responsive breakpoint produced the output you need. For a guaranteed full-page image in a one-off desktop workflow, use the DevTools command above.

Repeatable-job checklist
- Run the same Chrome version and viewport dimensions in your build or test environment.
- Use a stable URL and wait until required client-side content has appeared before taking the file.
- Keep the output filename deterministic for visual regression comparisons, and archive the browser version with the artifact.
- Test pages with cookie dialogs, bot checks, infinite scroll, sticky navigation, nested scrollers and cross-origin frames; these behaviors can produce a different image than a simple static page.
Use a full-page Chrome extension
GoFullPage
GoFullPage’s Chrome Web Store listing describes a scroll-and-stitch capture with PNG, JPG and PDF export. Install it only from the Chrome Web Store, review its current permissions, then open the page and select its toolbar button. The listing’s change log includes a 2026-09-24 entry for Chromium 153 URL requirements and other compatibility fixes, so extension behavior can change as Chrome changes.
Full Page Screen Capture
Another Chrome Web Store listing, Full Page Screen Capture, advertises one-click whole-page capture with annotation, redaction, OCR and PNG/JPG/PDF export. Compare the current listing, permissions and supported formats before installing.
Extension failure cases
Scroll-based extensions can miss content that appears only after a long delay, duplicate sticky headers in every stitched segment, or stop at an embedded frame or nested scroll area. If the result is incomplete, retry after dismissing overlays, allow the page to settle, or switch to DevTools or PDF.

Handle dynamic and difficult pages
Lazy-loaded images and infinite scroll
A full-page command or extension may trigger ordinary page scrolling, but a site that loads content only after user interaction can still end early. Scroll through the page once, wait for images to appear, then capture. Infinite-scroll pages have no fixed endpoint; capture the loaded portion or use the site’s own export.
Sticky headers and overlays
Sticky navigation can be repeated in stitched images, while cookie banners, newsletter prompts and chat widgets can cover content. Close them before a local capture. If you need a clean automated result, ScreenshotNeo can remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture.
Frames and protected content
An embedded frame, login wall, CAPTCHA or bot check may not render like the surrounding document. Confirm that you are authorized to capture the page, sign in when appropriate, and inspect the final image rather than assuming every frame was included.

Troubleshoot an incomplete or unusable capture
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The command is missing | DevTools is not focused, or the search text is wrong. | Click inside DevTools, reopen the Command Menu, and search for the exact phrase Capture full-page screenshot. |
| Bottom sections are blank | Lazy loading, delayed JavaScript or a failed request. | Reload, wait for the page to settle, scroll through it once, then capture again. Check the live page for the same failure. |
| A sticky bar appears repeatedly | A scrolling extension stitched each viewport with the fixed element. | Hide the bar temporarily with page controls or use the DevTools full-page command. |
| PDF looks different from the screen | Print CSS, margins, scale or hidden background graphics. | Adjust print settings and inspect the PDF; use an image capture when visual fidelity is more important than selectable text. |
| Headless output is cropped or responsive | The chosen viewport dimensions changed the layout. | Set an explicit --window-size, rerun, and verify the resulting file at its edges and bottom. |
| An extension stops partway | Nested scrolling, an iframe, a delayed request or a compatibility change. | Retry after content loads, review the current Chrome Web Store listing, or switch to DevTools/PDF. |
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture it accepts the cookie/consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the outcome with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

What “entire website” means in Chrome
Chrome’s built-in command, print dialog, Headless flags and extensions operate on the currently opened webpage. They do not automatically discover and capture every URL in a domain. For a multi-page archive, make a URL list, run a controlled Headless job or use an API with bulk capture, then review failures and duplicate content separately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Chrome capture a page that is taller than the screen?
Yes. DevTools’ Capture full-page screenshot command renders content beyond the visible viewport and saves one image. A print-to-PDF workflow creates paginated output instead.
Will a full-page screenshot include an embedded iframe?
It may not match the surrounding page, especially for cross-origin, delayed or protected frames. Inspect the final image and test the actual page rather than assuming every frame rendered.
Can I capture every page on a website with one Chrome command?
No. Chrome’s full-page features capture the open URL. Capturing a whole domain requires collecting URLs and running a separate batch or crawl process.
