Use your computer’s built-in screenshot control, choose a partial or rectangular capture, drag over the area you need, then save or copy the image. The shortcut depends on your operating system: Windows + Shift + S on Windows, Shift-Command-4 on Mac, and Shift + Ctrl + Show windows on Chromebook.
Choose the instructions for your computer

The keys and save locations are different, so use the section matching your operating system rather than trying one platform’s shortcut on another.
Windows: capture a selected area with Snipping Tool
Standard rectangular selection
- Press Windows + Shift + S. A Snipping Tool overlay appears and the screen becomes slightly gray while it waits for your selection. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.
- Choose the Rectangular snip icon if it is not already selected.
- Click and drag from one corner of the area to the opposite corner, then release.
- The result opens in Snipping Tool. Annotate or crop it, copy it with Ctrl + C, or save it with Ctrl + S.
Microsoft says captured snips are automatically saved to your Screenshots folder. Save behavior can vary with the Windows version and settings, so use Ctrl + S when you need a specific filename or folder.
Irregular or non-rectangular area
For a shape that cannot be represented by a box, choose Freeform snip before dragging. Draw around the object with the mouse or trackpad and release to complete the outline. Snipping Tool also includes window and full-screen modes if selecting a region is not the right target.

Capture a menu or other temporary interface
- Open Snipping Tool and choose its Delay control.
- Select a delay from 1 to 5 seconds.
- Start the capture, open the menu or tooltip during the countdown, and drag the required region when the overlay appears.
Delay is useful when opening the screenshot command would otherwise close the menu you are trying to show.
Windows-specific caveats
- Microsoft’s Perfect screenshot can adjust a rectangular selection around prominent visible content, but it is limited to eligible Windows 11 AI PCs/Copilot+ PCs. It is not a general Windows shortcut.
- Some applications protect their content or draw it in a way that does not appear in a capture. If the selected region is blank, try the application’s own export or screenshot command.
Mac: drag a selection with Shift-Command-4
Capture the selected rectangle
- Press and release Shift-Command-4. The pointer changes to a crosshair.
- Click and drag across the region you want.
- Release the mouse or trackpad button to capture it.
- Press Esc before releasing if you decide not to take the screenshot.
By default, macOS saves the image on the desktop. A floating thumbnail appears briefly; click it to open editing tools.
Move the selection while keeping its size
After you begin dragging, hold the Space bar to move the selection box without changing its dimensions. Release Space to continue resizing, then release the mouse or trackpad to capture.

Copy instead of saving a file
Hold Control while using the screenshot shortcut to place the result on the clipboard. You can also Control-click the floating thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard, then paste into an email, document, chat, or image editor.
Use the full Screenshot app
Press Shift-Command-5 to open macOS’s Screenshot app. Its Options menu provides a timer and a choice of save location. Apple documents the Screenshot app for macOS Mojave 10.14 and later in its Mac screenshot guide. Supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later may also offer SDR/PNG and HDR/HEIF choices; those format options are not required for a partial capture.

When a Mac capture is blocked
Some apps prohibit screenshots of protected windows. Apple gives Apple TV as an example. A black or empty result can therefore be an application restriction rather than a faulty shortcut.
Chromebook: take a partial screenshot
Keyboard method
- Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key usually has a rectangle with two vertical lines.
- If an external keyboard has no Show windows key, Google lists Ctrl + Shift + F5 as the alternative.
- Choose Screenshot, then choose Partial screenshot.
- Click and drag around the area, then release.
The capture is copied to the clipboard and saved to Downloads by default. Google says you can change the destination in Screen Capture settings. See Google’s Chromebook screenshot help.

Use the on-screen controls
Select the time in the bottom-right corner, choose Screen capture, select the partial-screenshot tool, and drag over the region. This route is helpful when your keyboard layout does not match the printed shortcuts.
Tablet and external-keyboard variations
- On a Chromebook tablet, Google’s shortcut reference lists Power + Volume down for a screenshot.
- Ctrl + Shift + Show windows opens additional screenshot features on supported Chromebook keyboards.
- Touchscreen gestures and external-keyboard keys vary by device. Consult your Chromebook’s on-screen Screen capture control if a shortcut does nothing.

Save, copy, and edit the selected capture
When you need an image file
- Windows: use Snipping Tool’s Save command to choose a filename and location; Microsoft also documents the Screenshots folder for automatic saves.
- Mac: look on the desktop unless you changed the location in Screenshot app Options.
- Chromebook: check Downloads unless Screen Capture settings specify another folder.
When you need to paste immediately
Windows copies with Ctrl + C. Mac copies when you hold Control with the screenshot shortcut. Chromebook captures are copied to the clipboard as part of the normal partial-screenshot workflow. Paste with your operating system’s usual paste command into the destination app.

Check the selection before sharing
- Confirm that the selection includes the complete control, border, or text you intended.
- Crop out passwords, private messages, account numbers, and browser tabs before sharing.
- Use annotations or a redaction tool for sensitive details; drawing a translucent mark may leave text readable underneath.
Troubleshooting a partial screenshot
The shortcut does nothing
- Verify that you are using the shortcut for the correct operating system.
- On Windows, open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and use its New command.
- On Chromebook, use the bottom-right time menu and Screen capture, or try the external-keyboard alternative.
- On Mac, confirm that screenshot shortcuts are enabled in System Settings under Keyboard and Keyboard Shortcuts.
The wrong area was captured
Cancel and start again rather than editing a misshapen selection. On Mac, press Esc before releasing; on Windows and Chromebook, dismiss the overlay and reopen it. Keep the pointer inside the target’s corner before beginning the drag.

Use Windows Snipping Tool’s 1–5 second delay, or on Mac open Shift-Command-5 and set a timer. A delayed capture gives you time to open a menu before selecting the area.
The image is blank or black
The application may block screen capture, as Apple documents for protected content such as Apple TV. Try the app’s export feature or capture an unprotected portion of the desktop.
The file cannot be found
Check each platform’s default destination: Windows Screenshots, Mac desktop, and Chromebook Downloads. Then inspect the tool’s save or Screen Capture settings for a changed folder.
The capture includes too much or too little
For a regular rectangle, start at one exact corner and drag diagonally to the opposite corner. On Windows, switch to Freeform when the subject has an irregular outline. On Mac, hold Space while dragging to reposition a fixed-size box.

Built-in tools
Windows, macOS, and ChromeOS provide these partial-capture controls without separate hardware or a paid service. They are best for a one-off image of what is currently visible, but the result depends on the application allowing capture and on your remembering the correct save location.
API capture
An API is useful when the source is a webpage and you need repeatable dimensions, automation, element selection, or PDF output. Keep API keys out of browser-side code, set a timeout appropriate for the page, and inspect the returned verdict and billing headers before storing a result. Privacy
Before sharing any screenshot, inspect visible personal data, authentication tokens, private URLs, and notifications. For API requests, send only URLs and credentials that your organization permits a third-party capture service to process, and use custom authorization or cookies only when required.
