The correct screenshot shortcut depends on your laptop’s operating system. On Windows, press Windows + Shift + S to start a screen selection. On a Mac, press Shift-Command-3 for the full screen, Shift-Command-4 for an area, or Shift-Command-5 for Screenshot controls. On a Chromebook, use the dedicated Screenshot key or Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The capture mode and default save location differ by platform.

Windows: use Windows + Shift + S
Capture part of the screen
- Press Windows + Shift + S together.
- When the Snipping Tool selection interface appears, select the screen region or capture mode you need.
- Complete the selection. Use the Snipping Tool notification or window to review, edit, copy, or save the result.
This shortcut starts a workflow; it is not the same as an immediate full-screen file save. The exact save behavior can vary with the current Snipping Tool version and your Windows settings, so use the save control shown after the capture rather than assuming a particular folder.
If the Windows shortcut does nothing
- Press the Windows key by itself to confirm that the keyboard recognizes it.
- Try the shortcut again with all three keys pressed at the same time.
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and capture from its interface. This separates a keyboard problem from an application problem.
- If you use a compact or remapped keyboard, check its Windows-key and function-layer settings.
Mac: choose full screen, area, window, or controls
Capture the entire display
- Press and release Shift-Command-3.
- Find the image on the desktop, the default macOS destination.
Apple’s documented instruction is: “To take a screenshot, press and then release these three keys together: Shift, Command and 3.”

Capture a selected area
- Press Shift-Command-4. The pointer becomes a crosshair.
- Drag across the area to capture, then release.
- Open the resulting file from the desktop unless you previously changed the destination.
Capture a window or menu
- Press Shift-Command-4.
- Press the Space bar. The pointer changes to a camera.
- Click the window or menu you want to capture.
Open Screenshot controls
On macOS Mojave 10.14 or later, press Shift-Command-5. The controls provide screenshot and screen-recording options, including an Options menu for choosing where files are saved.

Copy instead of saving a file
Hold Control with the relevant shortcut. For example, Control-Shift-Command-3 copies a full-screen capture to the clipboard. Paste it into an email, document, editor, or chat with Command-V.
Some apps can block screenshots of their windows. If a capture is blank or refuses to work only in one app, test another window and check that app’s security policy.
Chromebook: use the Screenshot key or Show windows shortcut
Open screen capture
- If your keyboard has a dedicated Screenshot key, press it.
- Otherwise press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key is the key used to display open windows on a Chromebook keyboard.
- Choose full-screen, partial-area, or window capture in the screen-capture interface.
Google’s shortcut reference also lists Ctrl + Show windows for a screenshot and Shift + Ctrl + Show windows for a partial screenshot. The interface-based command is useful when you want to choose the capture scope rather than remember separate combinations.

Use an external keyboard without Show windows
Press Ctrl + Shift + F5, the fallback Google documents for external keyboards that do not include a Show windows key.
Find and relocate Chromebook screenshots
ChromeOS saves screenshots and recordings in Downloads by default. Open the screen-capture settings to select a different destination if you prefer a folder in Files.
Choose the right shortcut for the result you need
- Whole display: use Mac Shift-Command-3, or open the Windows or ChromeOS capture interface and select full-screen mode.
- Only one region: use Windows + Shift + S, Mac Shift-Command-4, or ChromeOS partial capture.
- A single window: on Mac use Shift-Command-4, then Space; on Windows or ChromeOS choose window mode in the capture interface.
- Paste immediately: on Mac add Control to the shortcut. On Windows and ChromeOS, use the capture interface’s copy control after selecting the image.
- Record the screen: on macOS Mojave 10.14 or later, open Shift-Command-5 and choose a recording option.
Where did my screenshot go?
Windows
Windows’ documented shortcut opens Snipping Tool, but Microsoft does not establish one universal default folder for every configuration. Look for the Snipping Tool notification or open the app to use its save command. If you copied the image instead of saving it, paste it into an editor to verify the clipboard contents.

Mac
Check the desktop first. If nothing is there, press Shift-Command-5 and inspect Options for the selected save location. A Control-modified shortcut places the image on the clipboard rather than creating a desktop file.

Chromebook
Open the Files app and check Downloads. If the file is not there, reopen screen-capture settings and check the destination configured for screenshots and recordings.
Troubleshooting shortcut failures
The keys are on a different layout
Keyboard legends vary by country, laptop model, and external-keyboard design. Identify the key that performs the operating system’s Windows, Command, Show windows, or Screenshot function rather than relying only on its printed symbol. Function layers and manufacturer remapping can also change what a key sends.

A work or school app blocks capture
Some applications deliberately restrict screenshots. Test the shortcut on the desktop or in a different app. If only one protected window fails, the restriction is likely application-specific rather than a broken keyboard.
The result is blank or incomplete
Repeat the capture after the page or window finishes rendering. For a selected-area capture, start the drag just outside the intended content and release only after the entire region is covered. If the problem occurs consistently in one app, check that app’s capture policy.
You need a different output than a laptop screen image
Built-in shortcuts capture what is displayed locally. They do not automatically create a clean, full-page image of a website, remove consent dialogs, or render content that has not loaded in the visible viewport. For that job, a website screenshot service is more appropriate.
