Use an operating-system region capture when the part you need is visible. On Windows, open Snipping Tool and choose a rectangular snip. On macOS, press Shift+Command+4 and drag over the page area. If the target extends below the viewport or you want webpage content without browser chrome, use Firefox’s screenshot tool or Microsoft Edge Screenshot Tool instead.

Choose the right capture method

The important distinction is the capture boundary. An operating-system tool records pixels currently visible on your display. A browser tool can select webpage content and, in supported cases, include content below the fold.

What you need Best method What it captures
A visible rectangle, including browser chrome if selected Windows Snipping Tool or macOS selection Visible screen pixels
A portion of the webpage only Firefox screenshot selection Selected page content
An area that continues below the viewport Firefox or Edge page screenshot Page content beyond the current screen when supported
An entire long page Firefox or Edge full-page capture The webpage from top to bottom

Menu names and availability can differ by browser version, operating system, device and market. If a label is missing, update the browser or check its current help documentation.

Capture a visible part of a webpage on Windows

Use Snipping Tool

  1. Open the webpage and position the exact section you want inside the browser window.
  2. Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu. You can also press Windows+Shift+S to open the screen-snipping overlay.
  3. Choose the rectangular snip mode.
  4. Drag from one corner of the desired area to the opposite corner. Include only the pixels you want; the selection is limited to what is visible.
  5. Open the notification or Snipping Tool editor, annotate or crop further if necessary, and save the image.

This method captures everything inside the rectangle, including browser tabs, the address bar, scrollbars or desktop elements if you select them. To produce a page-only image, keep the drag entirely inside the webpage viewport.

When a Windows crop is not enough

Snipping Tool cannot select content that is currently below the viewport as one continuous webpage region. Scroll and take multiple captures, or use a browser’s full-page or selected-area feature instead.

Capture a visible part of a webpage on macOS

Use the screenshot selection

  1. Open the webpage and arrange the portion to be captured on screen.
  2. Press Shift+Command+4. The pointer becomes a crosshair.
  3. Drag over the desired portion of the page. Hold the mouse or trackpad button while positioning the edges.
  4. Release to capture. macOS normally saves the image to the desktop unless your screenshot settings specify another destination.

The selection records visible screen pixels. It does not automatically follow the webpage as you scroll, so a region extending below the current viewport requires a browser capture or several screenshots.

Check app restrictions

Apple notes that some apps may not allow screenshots of their windows. If the browser or a particular protected page refuses capture, try the browser’s own screenshot command, capture a permitted section, or ask the site owner for an export.

Select webpage content in Firefox

Firefox’s screenshot feature can select a region, save the visible page, or capture the full page. It is useful when you want the webpage rather than the surrounding desktop.

  1. Open the page in Firefox.
  2. Open the page context menu and choose the screenshot command. The exact label and location can vary with Firefox release and interface configuration.
  3. Choose the area or selection option.
  4. Drag the selection handles around the required content. Adjust the edges before confirming.
  5. Download or copy the resulting image.

For content below the fold, choose the full-page option or enlarge the selection as the tool permits. Full-page capture may need the page to finish loading first; wait for images and interactive content before confirming.

Firefox Developer Tools for technical workflows

Firefox Developer Tools includes a full-page screenshot control. Technical users can also use its command-line screenshot options, including device-pixel ratio, delay and filename. These controls help reproduce a capture at a known scale or allow lazy content time to render, but they are unnecessary for an ordinary visible crop.

Select an area or full page in Microsoft Edge

  1. Open the webpage in Edge.
  2. Open Screenshot (also called Screenshot Tool in some releases) from the browser toolbar or menu.
  3. Choose a selected area to drag around the required content, or choose full-page capture for the entire document.
  4. Review the result, then copy or save it.

Edge can capture material outside the visible viewport. Microsoft cautions that availability and functionality vary by device type, market and browser version, so your controls may not exactly match these steps.

Page content versus screen pixels

Use an OS crop when visible pixels are the goal

  • It is fastest for a small, visible rectangle.
  • It works regardless of which browser displays the page.
  • It can include browser controls or other on-screen elements if your selection crosses them.

Use a browser capture when webpage boundaries matter

  • You can avoid address bars, tabs and desktop background.
  • You can capture a region that is not wholly visible without stitching separate images.
  • You can request a full document, including content below the fold, where supported.

Improve the result before saving

  • Close cookie notices, newsletter dialogs and chat bubbles if they cover the target. If the page requires a consent choice, make it before capturing.
  • Wait for fonts, images and lazy-loaded media to finish rendering.
  • Set the browser zoom and window width first; changing them afterward changes the captured layout.
  • For text, use the largest readable scale that still includes the required context.
  • Check the saved file at 100% zoom for clipped edges, missing images or overlays.
  • Blur or crop passwords, email addresses, tokens and other private information before sharing.

Common problems and fixes

The selection is blank or black

Some protected windows and GPU-rendered content may resist OS capture. Try the browser screenshot feature, disable hardware acceleration only if your organization permits it, or capture a non-protected section.

The bottom of the page is missing

You used a screen crop, which only records the viewport. Use Firefox or Edge full-page capture, or scroll and capture separate sections.

Images are missing in a full-page capture

Lazy-loaded images may not load until their section approaches the viewport. Scroll through the page first, wait for network activity to stop, then repeat the browser capture. Dynamic pages can still change while the capture is assembled.

A popup covers the exact area

Dismiss the popup, complete the site’s consent prompt, or use a browser reader/print view when the page supports it. Do not use a screenshot that exposes personal data accidentally hidden behind the popup.

The browser menu has no screenshot command

Feature names and placements change. Update the browser, search its built-in help for “screenshot,” or use the operating-system method for a visible region.

Automate captures instead of using a desktop browser

For recurring jobs, a screenshot API gives you a URL, image format and rendering options without maintaining a local browser. ScreenshotNeo is the first service to try here because it removes consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan.

cURL

Install cURL, set your key, and run:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const data = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', data));

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request parameters and response headers. You can request PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF; full-page output can load lazy images; and options include CSS-selector element capture, viewport and device presets, retina scale, dark mode, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicks, waits, hidden selectors, blocked resources, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage data and an OpenAPI specification. Existing parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, easing migrations.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request and returns the rendered file. Cookie banners, popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Cost, reliability and privacy considerations

  • Local Snipping Tool, macOS screenshots, Firefox and Edge features do not add a separate capture-service charge.
  • Automated captures depend on the target site’s availability, scripts and access controls. A page can look different from an interactive browser session.
  • Keep API keys out of client-side code and logs. Treat captured images as potentially sensitive artifacts.
  • For repeatable output, record the URL, viewport, zoom, browser version or API options, capture time and any consent or authentication state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I capture only an image, paragraph or button from a webpage?

Yes. A browser-native selection can isolate the visible area, while ScreenshotNeo can capture one element by CSS selector for an automated workflow.

Will a screenshot include content hidden by scrolling?

An operating-system selection will not. Firefox and Edge can capture full-page content, subject to the page and browser version.

Which format should I save?

PNG is suitable for crisp text and transparency, JPEG for smaller photographic files, WebP for compact modern images, and PDF when the deliverable is a document.
