Pause the video if you need a particular frame, put the YouTube page in the state you want to preserve, then use your device’s screenshot shortcut. Choose a selected region or browser window to keep tabs and unrelated screen content out; use a scrolling or full-page option only if you need content below the visible screen.
Before you capture: choose what should be in the image
A standard screenshot records what is visible on the display at that moment. On a YouTube page, that can include the video, title, channel information, playback controls, browser tabs, and anything else occupying the screen. Decide whether you need a video frame, the visible page, or additional content below the viewport.
For a specific frame from the video
- Open the video and seek to the moment you want.
- Pause playback. If controls are visible over the picture, wait for them to fade or move the pointer away before taking the screenshot.
- Choose a region capture around the player if you want to exclude the page or browser controls.
For the page or browser window
Scroll the page to the content you want to show, then use a window capture if you want the browser area without the rest of the desktop. Use a rectangular selection for tighter framing. A full-screen capture is fastest when you need everything visible, but may include notifications and unrelated windows.

Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open the image-snipping overlay. Choose the capture mode, then select the area or window. Microsoft documents freeform, rectangular, window, full-screen, and video snips in Snipping Tool. For a still image of a YouTube page, use a rectangular, window, or full-screen snip.

- Pause and frame the video or scroll the page to the section you need.
- Press Win + Shift + S.
- Select Rectangle and drag around the player or page, or select Window and click the browser window.
- Open the capture in Snipping Tool to edit, save, or share it. Microsoft’s current documentation says captures are automatically saved in the Screenshots folder; check the app if you need to confirm the location.
Pressing Print Screen copies the entire screen to the clipboard. That is useful when you want the full display, but it is less selective than the snipping overlay. Microsoft describes Snipping Tool as a way to “Take a snapshot to copy words or images from all or part of your PC screen.” See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.
Capture a YouTube screenshot on a Mac
macOS has shortcuts for the whole screen, a selected area, and a single window:
- Shift-Command-3: capture the entire screen.
- Shift-Command-4: drag to select a portion of the screen.
- Shift-Command-4, then Space: move the camera pointer over a window and click to capture that window.
For a clean YouTube player image, use the selected-area shortcut and leave out the surrounding browser. For a browser-window image, press Space after the first shortcut and select the window. Shift-Command-5 opens the Screenshot app, where you can set a timer, change the save location, and adjust thumbnail and pointer options. Capture a YouTube screenshot on a Chromebook
Open Screen Capture from the shelf menu, or press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. If you are using an external keyboard without a Show windows key, Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5 as the alternative.
- Pause the video or position the page.
- Open Screen Capture and choose full screen, partial, or window capture.
- Select the area or window to capture.
- Find the screenshot in Downloads unless you selected another folder. Google says screenshots and recordings are also copied to the clipboard.

Capture a YouTube screenshot on an iPhone
On an iPhone with Face ID, quickly press and release Side + Volume Up. On a model with a Home button, press Side + Home. Tap the preview to crop, mark up, or share the image; screenshots are saved in Photos.

Apple also offers a Full Page capture when the option is available. This is most applicable to a YouTube page opened in a browser, rather than a video frame in the YouTube app. Full-page capture is not offered for every app or screen. Apple’s instructions are at Take a screenshot on iPhone.
Capture a YouTube screenshot on Android
On most Android phones, press Power + Volume Down together. If that shortcut does not work on your device, hold the Power button and choose Screenshot from the menu.
- Pause playback or scroll the page into position.
- Take the screenshot using the button combination or Power menu.
- On Android 12 and newer, look for Capture more if the screen offers scrolling capture. Drag the crop guides to include the additional content, then save.
- Find the result in Google Photos under Screenshots, or in the device Gallery on older setups.
Scrolling capture depends on the screen and app; it is not available everywhere. See Google Android Help for screenshot and screen-recording guidance.

Which capture method should you use?

For a video frame, prioritize a tight region and make sure playback controls are not covering the image. For a page you intend to explain or share, include enough surrounding context to make the title or relevant section clear. Review the image before sending it: crop out anything private or irrelevant, add markup only if it helps, and confirm where your device saved it.
Troubleshooting common YouTube screenshot problems
The shortcut does nothing
Make sure you are using the shortcut for your operating system and keyboard. On Chromebooks with an external keyboard, use Ctrl + Shift + F5 if there is no Show windows key. On Android, use the Power menu’s Screenshot command if the button combination is unsupported or difficult to press.
The screenshot includes tabs, controls, or the desktop
Use a selected-region capture instead of full screen. To capture the player without playback controls, pause at the desired frame and move the pointer away; wait for controls to disappear before capturing.

The screenshot cuts off the page below the screen
A normal screenshot captures the visible viewport, not the entire page. Use a platform’s scrolling or Full Page option when offered. On Android 12 and newer, check for Capture more; on iPhone, Full Page is available only in supported contexts, such as some browser pages.
You cannot find the saved image
Check the expected destination for your device: Windows Screenshots folder or Snipping Tool, Mac desktop by default, Chromebook Downloads unless changed, iPhone Photos, or Android Google Photos’ Screenshots location or Gallery. Some desktop shortcuts copy an image to the clipboard, so paste into an image editor if there is no saved file.
The image is blurry or shows the wrong moment
Pause at the exact frame before capturing and inspect the saved image at full size. If it is a video frame, a screenshot records the displayed image on screen; it does not create a higher-resolution frame than the player is showing.
