To capture a website homepage, first choose between a screenshot of the visible browser viewport and a full-page image. In Chrome, open DevTools, select More options, then choose Capture screenshot for the visible area or Capture a full size screenshot for the entire page. Firefox has a simpler built-in command: right-click the page, choose Take Screenshot, then select Save full page or Save visible.
Choose the type of homepage screenshot you need
A homepage can be taller than the browser window. The two common capture modes produce different results:
- Visible viewport: records only what is currently displayed in the browser window.
- Full page: stitches or renders content below the fold into one tall image.
- Element capture: records one selected part of the page, such as a hero banner or navigation bar.
Use a viewport capture for a bug report showing exactly what a user sees. Use full page when you need a design reference, an archive, documentation image or a review of the complete homepage. Full-page results can differ on pages that load content while scrolling, use sticky headers or contain unusual scrolling regions.
Capture a homepage in Google Chrome
Full-page or viewport capture with DevTools
- Open the homepage in Chrome.
- Open Chrome DevTools. You can use the browser menu or the usual developer-tools keyboard shortcut for your operating system.
- Turn on Device Mode if you want to simulate a desktop or mobile device. Set the device type, viewport width and height as needed.
- In the Device Mode toolbar, open More options (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Capture screenshot for the current viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the complete page.
Chrome saves the result as an image file. A full-size capture includes content that is not currently visible; a normal capture does not. Before capturing, close menus, move the pointer away from important content and wait for fonts, images and animations to settle.
Set a reproducible viewport
For screenshots that will be compared over time, use the same device preset or enter exact viewport dimensions each time. Device Mode changes the simulated viewport and can alter responsive breakpoints, so a mobile capture is not merely a cropped desktop image.

Capture a homepage in Firefox
Use Firefox’s built-in screenshot command
- Open the homepage.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and select Take Screenshot. Keyboard shortcuts are Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows and Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Select Save full page for the entire document or Save visible for the current view.
- Choose Download to save a PNG, or Copy to place the image on the clipboard.
This built-in tool is sufficient for most homepage captures; an extension is not required.
Capture a specific element or delayed state in Firefox DevTools
Firefox DevTools includes a Web Console :screenshot helper. It can capture a full page, wait before capturing, set the device-pixel ratio, copy to the clipboard, choose a filename and restrict the image to a CSS selector. Examples:
:screenshot --fullpagecaptures beyond the window.:screenshot --selector .herocaptures the element matching.heroand its descendants.:screenshot --delay 2waits two seconds before capture, useful for a hover menu or delayed animation.
Give each capture a new filename. Firefox documentation warns that a later capture using the same filename overwrites the earlier file.
What about Microsoft Edge and Safari?
Microsoft Edge
Edge provides a Web Capture command that can select an area, copy it or save it. Interface labels can change between Edge releases, so check the current right-click or browser menu before documenting a workflow for a team. For a guaranteed full-page result, verify that the saved image includes content below the fold rather than only the visible selection.

Safari, iPhone and iPad
The available evidence here does not establish current Safari or mobile-specific menu steps. Do not assume that a desktop workflow or a Chrome DevTools shortcut works unchanged on a phone or tablet. Use the screenshot controls documented for the exact Safari or mobile operating-system version you are running.
Prepare the homepage before you capture it
- Resolve consent prompts: accept or dismiss cookie notices if they obscure the design you need to document.
- Wait for loading: allow web fonts, images and lazy-loaded sections to appear.
- Choose a state: open or close navigation menus deliberately; a screenshot records the current state, not an interactive experience.
- Check sticky elements: fixed headers and chat buttons may repeat or cover content in a full-page image.
- Hide private data: remove account details, addresses, tokens and other information before sharing a capture.
- Keep dimensions consistent: record viewport size, zoom level and device preset when screenshots are used for visual regression or design review.
Save, copy and name the image
Firefox offers both download and clipboard output. Chrome and Edge normally download an image from their capture command; open the downloaded file to confirm that it has the expected dimensions. Use descriptive names such as homepage-desktop-full-2026-09-30.png or homepage-mobile-viewport.png. PNG preserves text and interface edges well; convert to JPEG or WebP only when smaller files are more important than lossless detail.

When browser capture is not enough
Browser tools are ideal for an occasional manual image. Automation introduces additional requirements: waiting for a selector or network idle, setting cookies and headers, blocking advertisements, selecting a CSS element, rendering PDFs, or capturing many URLs. Dynamic homepages may also change between runs as content loads or personalization takes effect.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before the capture; each cleanup step can be switched off. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed.
For a one-off full homepage image, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation and run:

Troubleshooting common screenshot problems
The image contains only the top of the homepage
You selected a viewport command. In Chrome choose More options > Capture a full size screenshot; in Firefox choose Save full page. Confirm that the page itself is not using an inner scrolling panel.

Images or lower sections are missing
Lazy-loaded content may appear only after scrolling. Wait longer, scroll through the page once, or use a tool that supports a selector wait, delay or network-idle condition. A full-page command cannot guarantee identical behavior for every dynamic site.
A menu or popup is in the wrong state
Close overlays before capture, or use Firefox’s :screenshot --delay to capture a deliberately timed state. For automated work, use a click action or custom JavaScript to establish the state first.
The screenshot is blurry
Increase the device-pixel ratio or use a retina-scale setting. Keep the resulting dimensions practical for storage and review; enlarging a low-resolution image afterward will not restore detail.
The file was overwritten
Assign a unique filename for each Firefox DevTools capture. Also check the browser download folder and your operating system’s duplicate-file naming behavior.

The request fails or returns a bot-check page
For browser tools, verify that the page loads normally and that extensions, authentication and network policy are not blocking it. For ScreenshotNeo, inspect X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed; bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts and failed loads are identified and are not billed.

FAQ
Does a full-page screenshot include content below the fold?
Yes, when you choose the browser’s full-page command; a viewport command includes only the currently visible area.
Can I copy a full homepage screenshot instead of saving it?
Firefox’s screenshot panel provides a Copy option. Chrome’s documented capture flow is download-oriented, so open the downloaded image and copy it from your image viewer if needed.
Do I need a browser extension?
No. Chrome and Firefox provide built-in full-page capture. Extensions are optional alternatives whose behavior and availability can change.

Why is my full-page image unusually tall or split strangely?
Sticky headers, inner scroll containers and dynamically inserted sections can affect how a browser renders a full-page capture. Try a stable viewport, wait for loading to finish and capture the relevant element when a single-page image is not meaningful.
What format should I use for a homepage screenshot?
Use PNG for crisp text and interface details. Use JPEG or WebP when a smaller file is more important and slight compression is acceptable.
