To capture a Twitter post—now displayed on X—open the post so its text, author handle, timestamp or other useful context is visible, then use your device’s built-in screenshot command. On an iPhone, press Side + Volume Up; on most Android phones, press Power + Volume Down. A screenshot saves a static image. If you only want to share the post while keeping a link back to the original, use X’s Repost or Quote Post option instead.
Before you capture the post
Open the individual post rather than capturing a crowded timeline. On X, selecting a post opens its details page; the source label appears at the bottom of that page. Keep the author’s display name, @handle, post text and enough surrounding context in the frame for someone else to understand what they are seeing.
- Scroll until the complete text you need is visible.
- Expand truncated text, quoted posts or content warnings before capturing.
- Decide whether replies, repost counts, media and the post’s date are relevant to your purpose.
- Do not include notification banners, direct messages or unrelated personal information.
A screenshot is an image record, not independent proof that a post is authentic or still available. Posts can be edited, deleted, restricted or displayed differently later. When accuracy matters, keep the post’s URL separately and check the live post again.

How to screenshot a Twitter post on an iPhone
- Open the X app or X.com and navigate to the post.
- Adjust the view so the post’s author, handle and relevant text are visible.
- Quickly press and release Side + Volume Up at the same time.
- Tap the thumbnail that appears in the lower-left corner to mark up, crop or share the image, or swipe it away to save it without editing.
- Find the result later in Photos under Screenshots.

How to screenshot a Twitter post on Android
- Open the post in the X app or a browser.
- Place the post and its attribution inside the screen.
- Press Power + Volume Down together, then release.
- Use the preview toolbar to crop, annotate or share. The image is normally stored in Photos or the device’s Screenshots folder.
Android controls vary by manufacturer and model. On some phones, holding the Power button and choosing Screenshot works. If neither method works, check the phone maker’s support instructions; Google notes that screenshot steps are not identical on every Android device.
Capturing a long post or thread
Use the phone’s scrolling-screenshot or “capture more” control if it appears after the first capture. It may not be available in every X view or on every phone. For a long thread, several numbered screenshots with the handle and visible sequence are usually easier to verify than one extremely tall image.
How to screenshot a Twitter post on a Mac
- Open the post in X and position the window so the relevant context is visible.
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open macOS Screenshot controls.
- Choose the entire screen, a window or a selected portion.
- Click Capture. Use the floating thumbnail to crop or annotate, if needed.
For documentation, a selected portion that includes the post, handle and date is often clearer than an entire desktop. macOS saves captures to the configured screenshot location, commonly the desktop.

The exact Windows shortcut was not verified for this guide, and keyboard mappings can differ by Windows version and keyboard. Use the built-in screen-capture command shown in your edition’s Snipping Tool or Windows support documentation rather than relying on an unverified key combination.

- Open the post in a browser and resize or zoom the page until the needed context is legible.
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu.
- Choose a rectangular or window snip, select the post, then save the image.
- Review the saved file before closing the browser.
If the post is longer than one screen, capture consecutive sections and name them in order. A single image that cuts off the handle or text can be misleading.

X describes Repost and Quote Post as sharing actions that reference the post being shared. Choose those options when a live reference matters more than an image file.
Make the screenshot useful as a record
Preserve attribution and context
Include the display name and @handle, the complete visible text, media context and the date or time when those details matter. Save the post URL in the same folder or note as the image. If you crop, retain one uncropped original so another person can see what was omitted.

Check the image before sharing
- Confirm that the handle is not cut off and that text is readable at normal zoom.
- Look for private names, email addresses, phone numbers, location details and private media.
- Remove unrelated notifications or account information from the frame.
- Do not assume a screenshot is authentic because it looks polished; compare it with the live post where possible.
X’s private-information policy, marked March 2024, says: “You may not threaten to expose, incentivize others to expose, or publish or post other people’s private information without their express authorization and permission, or share private media of individuals without their consent.” A public post can still contain another person’s private information, so review the image before forwarding it.

The buttons do nothing
Press and release rather than holding the combination. Try the manufacturer’s alternate command, such as the Android Power-menu Screenshot option, or use the operating system’s on-screen capture utility.

The screenshot is black or incomplete
Wait for the post and its media to finish loading, close overlays, and capture the post view rather than an embedded preview. Protected media or app-level restrictions can prevent a complete image.
The text is too small
Zoom the page or rotate the phone before capturing. For a long post, use several readable images instead of shrinking everything into one frame.

Keep the original file, capture date and URL. A screenshot preserves what was visible at capture time but cannot restore a deleted or restricted post.
The image includes sensitive information
Crop or redact it before sharing, while retaining an unedited copy securely if you are authorized to keep one. Never publish private information or private media without the required authorization or consent.
