To post a screenshot, capture the screen or area you need, review and edit the image, check it for private information, then share it from your device or select it in the social app’s current photo composer. The shortcut depends on your device: use Side + Volume Up on most Face ID iPhones, Power + Volume Down on many Android phones, Windows + Shift + S on Windows, or Shift-Command-5 on a Mac.

Capture, review, then share

A screenshot is a saved image of what was visible on your screen at a particular moment. The basic process is the same whether you are sharing a post, a receipt, a conversation, or an app screen, but the capture controls and file location differ by device.

  1. Choose what belongs in the image. Decide whether you need the full screen, one window, or only a selected region. If the image is meant to make one detail clear, a focused capture is often easier to understand than an entire screen.
  2. Take the screenshot. Use the shortcut for your device below. Some devices show an immediate preview; others save the image directly to a screenshot folder.
  3. Review and edit it. Crop out unrelated content or add markup if that helps explain the image. Editing does not replace a careful privacy check: inspect the final version, not just the original.
  4. Share it. Use the device’s Share control if it offers the social app you want, or save the screenshot and choose it from that app’s current photo or post composer.
  5. Check the post before publishing. Review the image, caption, and audience setting. Social apps can change their posting controls, so use the options currently shown in the app rather than relying on a universal button sequence.

Take a screenshot on your device

These are the documented default methods for the major phone and computer platforms. A manufacturer may offer additional controls, and some keyboard or power-button behavior can vary by device.

Device Capture method Where to find or edit it Scrolling capture
iPhone Face ID models: quickly press and release Side and Volume Up together. Home-button models: quickly press and release Home with Side or Top, depending on the model. Use the preview or find screenshots in Photos under Collections → Media Types → Screenshots. Not stated in the cited Apple guidance.
Android Commonly, press Power and Volume Down together. If that does not work, check the phone maker’s instructions; some devices expose Screenshot from a long press of Power. Use the preview or find screenshots in Photos under Collections → On this device → Screenshots, or in the manufacturer’s Gallery app. On Android 12 and later, Capture more supports scrolling screenshots on most screens that allow scrolling; it is not available on every screen.
Windows 10 and 11 Press Windows logo key + Shift + S, then choose a capture mode or area in the Snipping Tool overlay. The capture opens in Snipping Tool for markup, cropping, saving, and sharing. Not stated in the cited Windows guidance.
Mac Press Shift-Command-5, then choose full screen, window, or selected portion. Shift-Command-3 captures the whole screen; Shift-Command-4 selects an area. Use the Screenshot controls and their available options to work with the capture. Not stated in the cited Apple guidance.

iPhone

Press the appropriate button combination quickly and release it. On iOS 26, the screenshot opens with quick tools; on iOS 18 and earlier, a temporary thumbnail appears. Tap or open the preview to review the image, make any useful edits, and share or save it. If you dismiss the preview, look in Photos under Collections → Media Types → Screenshots.

Android

Power and Volume Down is the common shortcut, but the exact behavior can differ among manufacturers. If the combination does not capture the screen, check the phone maker’s guidance for your model rather than repeatedly pressing buttons or assuming the feature is unavailable. On Android 12 and later, look for Capture more after taking a screenshot when you need a scrolling image. It works on most screens that allow scrolling, not all apps or screens. Find the saved image in Photos under Collections → On this device → Screenshots or in the device’s Gallery app, then use Share to choose an available app.

Windows 10 and 11

Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool overlay. Select the capture mode offered there: freeform, rectangle, window, or full screen. The capture opens in Snipping Tool, where you can mark it up, crop it, save it, or share it. Print Screen settings and behavior can vary, so this shortcut is the clearest default when you want the Snipping Tool overlay.

Find the right crop and check what the image reveals

Cropping can make the point of a post easier to see and remove unrelated items around it. Before sharing, inspect the entire final image for details that may have been outside your intended subject. A screenshot can include more than the post or page you meant to show.

  • Location details or other identifying information in the visible screen.

If sensitive information is present, crop it out, use a suitable redaction, or recapture the screen after removing it. Then inspect the final image again. A crop may leave surrounding information visible, and drawing over text is not a substitute for checking that the information cannot still be read in the version you plan to post.

Share the image without assuming every app works the same way

There are two practical routes. If your device’s Share control lists the social app you want, select it and follow the controls shown there. Otherwise, save the screenshot, open the social app, and select the image through its current photo or post composer. App labels and posting flows change, so verify the selected image, caption, and audience in the composer before publishing.

If the post needs context, add a caption that explains what the image shows and, where useful, when it was captured. Avoid implying that a screenshot proves more than the visible information supports: it records what appeared on a screen, not necessarily the surrounding context or what happened before or after.

Consider consent, audience, and onward sharing

A screenshot is a durable copy. The Australian eSafety Commissioner cautions that a viewer can capture shared material and circulate it beyond its original audience, leaving the original sharer with no control over where it goes. Choose an audience with that possibility in mind, even when the original post or conversation was intended for a limited group.

Capturing content does not itself give permission to publish it. If a screenshot contains another person’s private information or private media, get their permission or remove those details before posting, and follow applicable platform rules and local law. X’s Private Information policy, marked March 2024, says: “You may not threaten to expose, incentivize others to expose, or publish or post other people’s private information without their express authorization and permission, or share private media of individuals without their consent.” That policy is specific to X; the eSafety warning about onward sharing is a broader caution.

Troubleshoot a screenshot that did not work

  • The button combination did nothing. Make sure you are using the combination for your device and release the buttons quickly. Android button behavior varies by maker; consult the instructions for the exact phone model. On Windows, use Windows logo key + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool overlay.
  • You cannot find the image. Check the screenshot preview if it is still available. On iPhone, open Photos → Collections → Media Types → Screenshots. On Android, check Photos → Collections → On this device → Screenshots or the manufacturer’s Gallery app. On Windows, check the Snipping Tool capture and save it if needed.
  • The screenshot cuts off part of a long page. On Android 12 and later, try Capture more when it appears; scrolling capture is supported on most, not all, screens that allow scrolling. If it is unavailable, take separate captures and explain their order in the caption if you share them together.
  • The wrong content appears in the image. Recapture after bringing the intended screen or window to the front. On Windows and Mac, choose the window or selected-area mode instead of full screen when that better isolates the subject.
  • The social app is not offered by Share. Save the screenshot first, then open the app and select the saved image from its current composer. The exact posting controls depend on the app and may change.
  • Private details remain visible after editing. Reopen the final saved image and inspect every edge and overlay. Crop, redact, or recapture, then recheck before sharing.

Or skip the browser setup

If you are capturing a web page for a development workflow rather than taking a screenshot from your phone or computer, ScreenshotNeo can return a website screenshot through one GET request. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP image:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
