To capture a webpage beyond the visible screen, use Chrome DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot command or enable Firefox’s full-page screenshot button. Then keep the original image with the page URL and capture time: a screenshot records what appeared in a browser, but by itself does not prove who published it, when it was published, or whether it has been altered.
What a full-page screenshot captures
A visible-area screenshot records only the part of the page shown in the browser window. A full-page screenshot aims to include content beyond the current viewport, allowing a fact-checker to review more of the page in one image. Browser documentation describes these capture features, but does not guarantee correct output for every dynamic page, lazy-loaded section, or nested scrolling area. Inspect the resulting file before relying on it.
Capture a full page in Chrome
- Open the webpage you want to document.
- Open Chrome DevTools and turn on Device Mode.
- Open the Device Mode more-options menu.
- Select Capture a full size screenshot.
Chrome for Developers describes this command as capturing the whole page, including content not visible in the viewport. See Chrome DevTools: Device Mode for the documented feature. After capture, open the image and check for missing or duplicated sections, especially if the page loads content as you scroll or contains its own scrolling panels.
Capture a full page in Firefox
Use the screenshot button
- Open Firefox DevTools and select DevTools Settings.
- Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Use the screenshot icon in the DevTools toolbar. Firefox says the image is saved to Downloads.
Use the Web Console
Alternatively, open the Web Console and run:
:screenshot --fullpageFirefox documents that the --fullpage option includes page content outside the window bounds. Its documentation also warns that a new capture using the same filename overwrites the previous file, so use distinct filenames when retaining multiple captures. What to know about Microsoft Edge
Microsoft describes Edge Screenshot as able to capture a full page or selected area and add markup before copying or saving. The available documentation does not establish a reliable, version-specific menu sequence or shortcut here, so check the current Edge interface rather than relying on an assumed path. Verify the saved image for completeness.

A screenshot is a visual record, not self-authenticating proof. The browser documentation describes how to capture a page; it does not establish a legal or newsroom evidence standard for proving authorship, publication date, or authenticity.

- Keep the original capture unchanged and make a separate copy before annotating or redacting it.
- Record the complete page URL and the capture date and time, including time zone, in notes or a companion record.
- Note the browser and version and the capture settings used, so another reviewer can understand how the image was made.
- Label edited derivatives and describe what was changed.
- If a claim turns on a disputed source, date, or legal standard, corroborate it with other records and follow the relevant organization policy or jurisdiction-specific advice.
A checksum can help detect later changes to a file only when the reference checksum and its custody are trusted. A timestamp, watermark, or checksum alone does not independently prove that the depicted page content is authentic.

- Scope: Does it capture the entire document, a selected area, or one element?
- Output and editing: Do you need an image or PDF, markup, blur or redaction, or control over filenames?
- Privacy: Where are page contents processed or capture files sent? Check the tool’s current privacy documentation, particularly for sensitive pages.
- Page behavior: Do dynamic, lazy-loaded, sticky, or nested-scroll sections appear correctly in the actual file?
- Reproducibility: Can you record the browser, version, time zone, URL, and capture settings?
