To cancel a Western Union money transfer, act immediately. Cancellation is only possible while the recipient has not picked up or received the money, and in some markets the window is as short as 30 minutes after you paid. Start with your Western Union online account or app. If no Cancel option appears, call customer care, or if you sent the money in person, go back to the sending agent location. If the money has already been paid out, ordinary cancellation usually no longer applies, and you will need to ask Western Union what options remain for that specific transfer.
How do I cancel my money transfer and ask for a refund?
The fastest route is the Western Union account or app, followed by customer care. The route you can use depends on how you sent the money, where you sent it from, and how the recipient was to be paid. The steps below cover the common paths, and the country table later in this article shows how the rules differ.
Check whether the transfer can still be canceled
Before you submit anything, confirm the transfer’s status. Cancellation depends on whether the money has been paid out, so a status check tells you whether to act now or to ask a different question.

- Open the transfer from your account history, or use the Track a Transfer function.
- Enter the MTCN (Money Transfer Control Number) from your receipt if the transfer does not appear in your history.
- Read the status. If it shows that the money has been picked up, collected, deposited, or completed by the recipient’s bank, a standard cancellation is generally not available.
- Note how much time has passed since you paid. In the US, the 30-minute window starts at payment, so the time matters more than anything else in this step.
Cancel online or in the app
Western Union’s Australia FAQ describes an account-based cancellation flow for online transfers. Other markets may show slightly different screens, but the sequence below is a good template for what to look for.
- Log in to your Western Union account or app.
- Select the transfer you want to cancel.
- Choose Cancel.
- Select a reason from the list offered.
- Review the refund details shown on screen, including the amount, whether fees are included, and the estimated timing.
- Confirm the cancellation, then save the confirmation or screenshot it.
If the Cancel option is missing, the transfer may already be past the point where an online cancellation is allowed. Do not assume the transfer is canceled until you receive a confirmation. Contact customer care instead.
Cancel by phone, email, or at the agent
Customer care
For online transfers, Western Union’s US customer care offers chat and phone assistance. The current contact numbers are listed on the Western Union US customer care support page, so check that page rather than relying on a number from an old receipt. Have the following information ready before you call:
Rank #2
- The amount you sent and the currency
- The destination country and the recipient’s city or location
- The MTCN or confirmation number
- The date and time you paid
The US remittance cancellation disclosure asks for the same identifying details, including the amount and where the funds were sent.
Email under the US disclosure
The US error resolution and cancellation disclosure gives a phone number and an email address for cancellation requests. It states: “In order to cancel, you must contact us at the phone number or e-mail address above within 30 minutes of payment for the transfer.” Use the contact details printed on your own disclosure, and keep a copy of what you sent.

In-person transfers
If you sent the money at an agent location, contact that sending agent location. Ask them to confirm whether the transfer can still be canceled and what refund route applies. Bring your receipt.
Deadlines, refunds, and timing by market
The rules are set by country and by transaction terms. The table below compares the four markets for which Western Union has published the rules cited here. Treat it as a guide to the questions to ask, not as a universal promise. Where a market does not publish a request deadline in the material reviewed, the table says so.
Rank #4
| Market and transfer type | When cancellation is available | Request deadline | Refund and timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States, remittance transfer (US error resolution and cancellation disclosure) | Money has not been picked up or deposited before Western Union receives the written request | Within 30 minutes of payment, for a refund of all amounts paid, including fees | Refund within three business days if the money has not been picked up or deposited |
| Australia, online transfer (Western Union Australia FAQ) | Funds have not been picked up or deposited to the listed recipient channels, which include bank, mobile wallet, and card payout | Not stated in the FAQ reviewed | Refund within seven business days after the cancellation is processed |
| Portugal, bank-account transfer (Western Union Portugal FAQ) | The recipient’s bank has not completed the transfer | Not stated in the FAQ reviewed | Refunds typically take up to 10 business days from completion, as stated in the FAQ |
| Gibraltar (Western Union Gibraltar FAQ) | The receiver has not picked up the transfer | Not stated in the FAQ reviewed | Not stated in the FAQ reviewed |
Those figures come from the official pages named in the table, and they were current when those pages were accessed in 2026. Refund terms can change, and the terms that apply to your transfer are the ones on your receipt and in the transaction screen.
What the refund includes
Whether your fees come back depends on the market and how quickly you act. In the US, the full-refund promise of all amounts paid, including fees, applies only to a request made within the 30-minute window. Outside that window, or in a market that does not state a fee refund, the refund amount is whatever the cancellation screen or your transaction terms show. Before you confirm, check three things on screen: the refund amount, whether fees are included, and the refund method. The refund method for your transaction is stated on the receipt or the cancellation screen.
If the money has already been picked up
If the recipient has collected the money, deposited it, or the recipient’s bank has completed the transfer, the standard cancellation route is generally closed. You can still contact Western Union to ask what options apply to that transaction. Keep your receipt, the MTCN, and any messages from the recipient or the payout provider, because they will help the customer care team review the transfer.
If the refund does not arrive
Keep the cancellation confirmation until the refund appears. If the refund has not arrived within the estimate that applied to your transaction, contact customer care with your MTCN and confirmation details. On the US customer case form, choose the case category named Refund and Cancellation. Count the estimate from the date the cancellation was processed, not from the date you first asked, and allow for public holidays and bank processing time before concluding the refund is missing.
