For the people you call often, add them to Phone app Favorites and tap a name to start a call. iPhone also lets you call back from recent calls, ask Siri, choose a number in Contacts, or dial manually; the best route depends on whom you’re calling and what information you have.
How to add a contact to Favorites on iPhone

Open the Phone app and follow the path for the layout on your iPhone:

- Classic layout: Tap Favorites, then Add.

Select the contact. Choose the communication method and preferred number from the options shown. A Favorite can be set up for a method such as calling, messaging, or video, so select the one you intend to use.

Tap Done.
To call a Favorite, tap the person’s name.
Choose a quick way to place the call
| Situation | Route | What to do |

| You call this person often | Favorites | Tap the Favorite’s name. |
| You are returning a call | Calls or Recents | Find the recent name or number and place the call; the exact steps depend on the Phone layout. |
| Voice input is convenient | Siri | Ask Siri to call a contact or dial a number, such as “Call Eliza’s mobile.” |
| You need to choose a contact or number | Contacts | Open Contacts in Phone, choose a person, tap Call, then choose a phone number. |
| The number is not saved, or you need dialing details | Keypad | Enter the number; the keypad also supports redialing and pauses for interactive phone systems. |
Call someone back from recent calls
Unified layout
Open Calls, tap the name or number, tap Call, then select the number to use. To have a tap on a recent name or number start the call immediately, go to Settings > Apps > Phone > Tap Recents to Call and turn on the setting.

Classic layout
Tap Recents, then tap the name or number.
Use Siri, Contacts, or the keypad
Ask Siri
Ask Siri to call a contact or dial a number. If a contact has more than one number, specifying the intended one—such as “mobile”—can help identify which to call.
Select a person in Contacts
In Phone, open Contacts and choose the person. Tap Call, then select the number you want.

Dial manually or add a pause
Use the keypad for an unsaved number or when you need to enter dialing details. A soft pause waits two seconds before continuing. A hard pause stops until you tap Dial, which is useful when a phone system requires you to listen or make a choice before entering more digits.

For a keypad call, you can select the line to use. A call placed from a contact uses the default voice line unless you have set a preferred line for that contact. If a call should go out on a particular line, check the line selection before placing it or set that contact’s preferred line.

Apple’s documented calling options
Apple’s iPhone User Guide documents calling from Favorites, recent calls, Contacts, Siri, and the keypad. Its instruction for Favorites is: “To contact someone in your Favorites, tap their name.” Menu labels and steps can differ between the Unified and Classic Phone layouts, so use the path that matches the tabs shown on your device.
