To calibrate an external HDR monitor for macOS, first use the monitor maker’s own HDR and hardware-calibration controls, then choose the appropriate color profile or supported reference mode in macOS. The right settings depend on the monitor model and the work you do; an HDR label alone does not identify a suitable calibration target.
Decide whether calibration is needed
For ordinary home or office use, Apple says, “Calibrating your display isn’t usually necessary for a Mac in a typical home or office environment.” Calibration matters more when consistent color and brightness are important—for example, in a color-managed production workflow. Before changing settings, identify the monitor model, connection, firmware, intended content, and goal: general desktop use, HDR video work, or another color-critical task. The target color space, white point, luminance, transfer function, and viewing conditions should match that goal.
Apple’s Display Calibrator Assistant guide explains macOS profile calibration. The monitor’s manual is the authority for its built-in picture modes and vendor calibration features; those controls are separate from a macOS profile.

Apple’s Display Calibrator Assistant documentation describes creating a profile, while its Pro Display Calibrator guide covers the supported Apple-device workflow. If you use a colorimeter or spectroradiometer, confirm that it works with both the display and the chosen calibration software before buying or configuring it.

Set up the monitor and macOS profile
- Check the monitor manual. Find the model-specific instructions for HDR mode, color mode, calibration features, and any required vendor software or measurement instrument. Do not assume that menu names, capabilities, or HDR behavior are the same across monitors.
- Open the external display’s settings. On the Mac, go to System Settings > Displays, select the external display, and look for Color profile > Customize. Where available, this opens Display Calibrator Assistant.
- Create and assign a profile if appropriate. Follow the assistant’s prompts for the intended display and workflow. The result is a calibrated color profile assigned to that display; it is not a substitute for monitor-specific HDR setup.
- Use the monitor’s hardware calibration workflow separately, if supported. Follow the vendor’s instructions for the exact model and target. Keep its settings and the macOS profile consistent with the same intended workflow.
- Check the result in the actual viewing conditions and content. Reference modes are designed for defined workflows and controlled viewing conditions. Assess the display using the material and environment for which it was configured.
Use reference modes only when they match the workflow
A reference mode is not simply a generic HDR switch. It configures defined targets such as color space, white point, gamma or transfer function, and brightness for a particular media workflow. Apple notes that reference modes and custom options are available only on supported displays; the presence of HDR capability does not mean a specific Apple reference mode is available.
Apple describes HDR Video (P3-ST 2084) as a preset for 4K or ultra-high-definition video production, using P3 primaries and the SMPTE ST 2084 EOTF, with up to 1,000 nits full-screen sustained on supported displays. That is a specification for this Apple preset, not a brightness promise for an unspecified third-party monitor. Apple’s reference-mode documentation also describes custom target controls, including gamut, white point, luminance, and transfer function; options vary by device.

Apple display calibration: choose the matching path
For supported Apple displays, Apple documents three distinct calibration approaches. Full Calibration recalibrates white point, primaries, luminance, and gamma response using a compatible colorimeter or spectroradiometer. Fine-Tune Calibration adjusts measured white point and luminance toward target values. Visual Fine-Tune adjusts white point by visual comparison. These options are not available for every external monitor.

For Full Calibration, Apple calls for current macOS and display firmware, and recommends a Thunderbolt connection when using Pro Display Calibrator. Follow Apple’s calibration instructions for the supported device rather than applying the procedure to an unsupported display.

For Pro Display XDR HDR color correction
Apple recommends using Pro Display XDR as the external HDR reference monitor in a two-display setup, with a separate display for the Final Cut Pro interface. Apple’s article for that setup lists Final Cut Pro 10.4.7 or later and macOS 10.15 or later as requirements. Without the monitor model, macOS version, connection path, and intended workflow, there is no reliable way to prescribe its on-screen menu steps, HDR handshake, brightness limits, compatible Apple reference mode, or a particular colorimeter. Use the monitor’s current manual for model-specific behavior, and use a defined production target when color accuracy is critical. A profile or preset selected without matching the content and viewing conditions may produce unsatisfactory results.
