To estimate your household’s income percentile in a state, compare your household income with income-distribution thresholds for that same state, using a consistent year and income definition. The American Community Survey (ACS) is the clearest default for this question. If your income falls between two published thresholds, you can interpolate an approximate percentile—but it is not an exact Census rank.

Choose the income measure and data period

For the ordinary question—how a household compares with other households in its state—use ACS household income. Do not substitute individual earnings or tax-return adjusted gross income (AGI): those measure different things.

Choose the state, income reference year, and ACS series before calculating. The Census Bureau provides both single-year state estimates and pooled five-year estimates for geographies that include census tracts and block groups. They describe different periods, so use one series consistently and identify it in your result. The Census Bureau’s ACS income FAQ explains the survey’s geography and estimate availability.

For a concrete reference, the Census Bureau’s 2024 ACS one-year Subject Table S1901 reports income in 2024 inflation-adjusted dollars and includes household-income distribution categories, as well as median and mean values. Confirm the release, definitions, and dollar basis for the state cut-point data you use; do not combine thresholds from a different year or series without explaining the mismatch.

Calculate an approximate percentile

  1. Find state-specific income thresholds. Use published cut points for the state and ACS release you selected. A national distribution or another state’s thresholds will not answer a state-specific question.
  2. Locate the bracket. Identify the two adjacent percentile thresholds whose income values fall immediately below and above your household income.
  3. Interpolate if needed. If your income is between those thresholds, a linear estimate is:
estimated percentile = lower percentile + ((household income − lower income threshold) / (upper income threshold − lower income threshold)) × (upper percentile − lower percentile)
  4. Label the result. State the geography, ACS data year and series, dollar basis, and that the rank is an estimate. If income exceeds a top-coded upper threshold, report that it is above the published cutoff rather than assigning a precise higher percentile.

Linear interpolation assumes incomes are spread uniformly within the bracket, which may not be true. A third-party explanation of this method, its limited precision, and its top-coded boundary is available from Beforeview’s state household-income percentile methodology; it describes the result as accurate to only a few percentile points. Treat an interpolated rank as an approximation, not an official individual Census ranking.

Understand what the result does—and does not—say

A state percentile is not a national percentile

Your state percentile locates household income within that state’s distribution. A national percentile compares it with households across the country. The same income can occupy different positions in those two distributions.

The median is useful context, not a full ranking tool

The median is the 50th-percentile point: half of households are below it and half above it. But the median alone cannot show where an income elsewhere in the distribution ranks. The Census Bureau’s 2023 state and metropolitan area report compares state median household income and Gini measures using 2022 and 2023 ACS estimates; these summaries provide context, not arbitrary-income percentile cut points.

Other income distributions answer different questions

  • IRS state AGI percentiles: The IRS ranks adjusted gross income reported on individual income-tax returns. Use these for a tax-return AGI comparison, not as a substitute for household income. See the IRS state AGI percentile data.
  • BEA personal-income distributions: The Bureau of Economic Analysis publishes prototype distributions of personal and disposable personal income by household. Its distribution of personal income page says the state prototype was updated in July 2026, adding 2024 and revising 2012–2023. This is a distinct income concept and methodology; explain that choice if using it instead of ACS.

The Census Bureau’s income overview provides additional background on its income statistics.

Report the comparison clearly

A useful result names the measure and its limits, for example: “Using [state] household-income thresholds from the [year] ACS [one-year or five-year] release, [income amount] is approximately at the [percentile] percentile, in [dollar basis] dollars; the percentile is interpolated between published cut points.” Replace the brackets only with values verified in the selected dataset. If you use a direct published threshold rather than interpolation, say so.

When comparing two results, keep the income concept, reference period, geography, inflation-adjusted dollar basis, and estimation method aligned. If any differ, make the difference explicit; otherwise, the apparent percentile change may reflect the data choices rather than a change in relative position.
