To estimate your household’s carbon footprint in the United States, use the EPA Household Carbon Footprint Calculator, enter a year of actual utility and vehicle-use data where possible, then compare its home energy, transportation, and waste totals. The largest category varies by household; the calculator’s breakdown—not a national rule of thumb—shows which included source is biggest for you.
What the EPA household calculator counts
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Household Carbon Footprint Calculator estimates emissions in three categories: home energy, transportation, and waste. It is a practical starting point, not a complete account of everything a household consumes or a precise lifecycle analysis. EPA says the calculator “was designed primarily as an educational tool and does not produce precise estimates.”
Its scope leaves out some significant activities, including air travel and food production and distribution. The waste section addresses waste handling using the calculator’s methodology; it does not capture the full emissions of producing and transporting the food you eat. Treat the result as an estimate of the activities it includes, rather than a definitive total for your lifestyle.

What information to gather before calculating
Collect a representative 12 months of activity data. Physical units from bills are more useful than spending amounts: the calculator converts dollars using assumed average energy prices, so price changes can distort a dollar-based estimate even if your usage did not change.
- Household and location: household size and U.S. ZIP code.
- Electricity: annual kilowatt-hours (kWh), ideally totaled from utility bills or an account’s usage history.
- Home heating and other fuels: annual natural gas, fuel oil, and propane consumption. Use the units shown on your bills, such as therms, cubic feet, or gallons, and follow the calculator’s input prompts.
- Vehicles: each vehicle, miles driven over a representative year, and actual or rated fuel economy. EPA points users to fueleconomy.gov for rated efficiency.
- Waste and recycling: the material categories and recycling choices requested by the calculator. Its assumptions treat selected recyclable material as if 100% of it were recycled, so these inputs are not a detailed audit of what your household actually diverts.
If a full year of records is unavailable, use the best representative data you have and note that the result is less certain. Avoid mixing a short, unusual period—such as a move, renovation, or extended trip—with a typical year without accounting for the difference.

How to calculate the estimate
- Open the EPA Household Carbon Footprint Calculator and provide household size and ZIP code.
- Enter actual electricity and fuel consumption from bills where available. Prefer kWh, fuel quantities, or other physical usage units over dollar amounts.
- Enter the vehicles and annual driving information. Keep the calculator’s vehicle estimate distinct from lifecycle estimates elsewhere: EPA describes its household vehicle calculation as tailpipe-oriented, while fueleconomy.gov presents wider fuel-lifecycle estimates.
- Complete the waste and recycling questions using the material categories that match your household. Remember that the calculator’s full-recycling assumption for selected materials can differ from real-world recycling outcomes.
- Review the category totals and their subcomponents. Identify the largest category included in this estimate, then determine whether a particular source—such as electricity, natural gas, or vehicle travel—is driving it.
How to identify the biggest source
There is no defensible universal answer to “What is the biggest source of my household carbon emissions?” Home energy may dominate in one household, while transportation does in another. Electricity use, the local power mix, heating fuel and climate, driving distance, vehicle efficiency, and what the estimate counts all affect the comparison. EPA notes that “Everyone’s carbon footprint is different depending on their location, habits, and personal choices.”
Use your own category totals to rank the included sources. If home energy is largest, look separately at electricity and direct fuel use; if transportation is largest, examine miles driven and vehicle efficiency. A category total identifies where the calculator estimates emissions, not necessarily which single change will be cheapest or easiest.

Keep the accounting boundary in mind when comparing figures. EPA’s household vehicle estimate is tailpipe-focused, while its electricity and waste methods use different factors and boundaries. A number that includes fuel production or other lifecycle effects is not directly comparable to a tailpipe-only number unless the difference is made explicit.
Why electricity and home-fuel estimates differ
Electricity depends on usage and location
Electricity-related emissions reflect both the kWh consumed and the generation mix serving the region. EPA’s calculator assumptions cite eGRID subregional factors; multiplying household kWh by one national factor should not be presented as a precise local result. EPA’s GHG Emission Factors Hub lists a January 2025 update, while calculator assumptions draw on multiple data vintages. Do not treat all of the calculator’s inputs as if they came from one current-year dataset.

Direct fuels depend on quantity and equipment
Natural gas, fuel oil, and propane emissions depend on how much fuel the household burns. Heating demand, climate, building characteristics, and the efficiency of furnaces, boilers, water heaters, and other equipment can help explain why two homes with similar floor area have different totals.

How to interpret household averages
EPA does not publish one official average household emissions figure. Its equivalencies calculations illustrate 7.45 metric tons of CO2 per home per year for electricity plus natural gas, propane, and fuel oil, using national averages and 2022 household energy consumption under EPA’s 2024 methodology. That is an energy-only illustration—not a universal total for home, travel, and waste.
The same EPA calculation uses 12,194 kWh of delivered electricity per U.S. home in 2022, citing EIA data from 2023, and assumes 5.12% transmission and distribution losses based on 2022 electricity supply data. These are inputs to that particular calculation, not predictions for an individual home or interchangeable values for other years.
EPA’s calculator assumptions also include indicative “typical” category values based on older survey inputs: electricity at about 881 kWh per month; natural gas at 4,717 cubic feet per month; fuel oil at 42 gallons per month; and propane at 32 gallons per month. The associated annual figures use EIA 2020 survey data and EPA 2024 factors, and vary in units and emissions basis. They should not be added together as a current, universal household total. A sector inventory divided by the number of households may also omit transportation, so any comparison needs a clearly stated scope and year. See EPA’s equivalencies calculations and references and calculator assumptions for the underlying context.
What to address after you find the largest category
Start with measures that target the largest measured source, while considering cost, feasibility, climate, and the systems in your home. EPA lists possible actions, but its default savings assumptions are not guarantees for an individual household and do not establish a universal ranking of products or upgrades.
- If heating or cooling is a substantial source: adjust thermostat schedules first, where comfort and health needs allow. A programmable thermostat can automate schedule changes, but it is optional, and compatibility depends on the home’s heating and cooling system. If you prefer manual adjustments, buying a thermostat is not necessary.
- If electricity is substantial: look for practical reductions in electricity use, such as efficient lighting and appliances. Green power may be an option where a utility or supplier offers it; availability varies.
- If driving is substantial: consider whether some trips can be reduced, combined, or made by another mode, and compare vehicle efficiency when a vehicle change is already under consideration.
- If waste is substantial: use the calculator’s waste categories to identify relevant reduction and recycling opportunities, while recognizing that its recycling assumptions may exceed actual diversion.
For any proposed action, check that it affects the source you measured and fits your home. A change can reduce direct fuel use, electricity use, or both; those effects should be evaluated against your own baseline rather than assumed from a generic savings figure.
