To calculate what you will pay for gold jewelry in India, add the metal value, making charge and any other disclosed charges, apply GST as shown on the seller’s invoice, then subtract discounts or credits actually applied. The key is to compare the same purity, net gold weight and dated gold-rate basis; a making-charge percentage alone does not tell you which item costs less.
What goes into the final jewelry bill?
Use this reconciliation:
Total payable = metal value + making charge + other disclosed charges + GST − discounts or credits.
Work from a dated quote and the final tax invoice. Record the item’s purity, net gold weight, gold rate and its unit, making-charge basis, any other charges, discounts and GST. The calculation is only as reliable as those inputs.

1. Confirm the rate basis
Ask whether the quoted rate is per gram or another unit, which date or session it applies to, and whether it is for 24-karat gold or the jewelry’s own purity. Use the seller’s stated basis. If the rate already corresponds to the item’s karat, do not apply another purity adjustment.

2. Calculate the metal value
Use net gold weight, not the item’s total weight if it includes stones or other materials. When the seller quotes a per-gram rate for the item’s purity, calculate:
Metal value = rate per gram × net gold grams.
For example, if a dated quote gives a rate of ₹6,000 per gram for the item’s purity and the jewelry contains 5 grams of net gold, its metal value is ₹30,000 before making charges, other charges, GST and any discount. This is an arithmetic illustration, not a current gold price.

3. Add the making charge
Making charges pay for workmanship and may be presented as a rupee amount, a charge per gram or a percentage. Ask for the actual charge in rupees for the item, and how the seller calculated it. There is no standard making-charge percentage established by the official sources cited here, so compare the rupee amount and final bill rather than relying on a supposed standard.
4. Clarify other charges and discounts
Ask the seller to explain any wastage, stone or other separate charge and whether it is already included in another line item. Add each charge only once. Subtract a discount or credit only if it appears in the quote or invoice and applies to your purchase.

5. Include GST
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) states that GST on jewelry sold to an end consumer is 3% of the total transaction value, whether the making charge is shown separately or not. Its sectoral FAQ gives this treatment for a jewelry sale with separately shown gold value and making charges; its rate table lists precious-metal jewelry under HSN 7113 at 3%. Check the current rules and the seller’s tax invoice at purchase time. See the CBIC sectoral FAQ.
Follow the tax treatment on the seller’s invoice rather than applying a separate tax calculation to the making charge based on an online calculator. Keep the components visible in your own reconciliation so you can check that the final invoice matches the quote.

How to compare two jewelry quotes fairly
Compare like with like. Two designs can differ in stones, construction and other features, so their headline making-charge figures may not be directly comparable.
| Compare | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Purity | Same caratage or fineness, and whether the quoted rate is for 24K or the item’s purity. |
| Gold weight | Net gold weight, not gross item weight that includes stones or other materials. |
| Rate | Same unit, date or session, and rate basis. |
| Making charge | Actual rupee amount and whether it is quoted as a fixed sum, per-gram charge or percentage. |
| Other charges | What wastage, stone or other fees cover, and whether they are already included elsewhere. |
| Discount and tax | Discounts or credits recorded for the purchase and GST shown on the invoice. |
| Hallmark and invoice | Hallmark and HUID details, required invoice fields, and the final amount due. |
A “zero making charges” promotion is not enough to establish that an offer is cheaper. Compare the actual invoice values and tax-inclusive total for equivalent items.

Do hallmarking charges include making or wastage charges?
No. BIS says hallmarking charges do not include making or wastage charges. Treat hallmarking as a separate charge when the seller lists it separately, and ask how it is handled if it appears bundled in a quote. Do not confuse the jeweller’s making charge with BIS’s hallmarking-service charges.
The BIS Hallmarking FAQ lists ₹45 per gold article and a ₹200 minimum consignment charge, with applicable taxes or levies possibly extra. These are BIS hallmarking-service charges, not the jeweller’s making charges or an estimate of what a consumer’s jewelry should cost. Check the current BIS hallmarking FAQ before relying on those figures.
How to check the hallmark and invoice
Verify the hallmark and HUID
BIS describes three marks on hallmarked gold jewelry: the BIS logo, purity in caratage and fineness, and a six-digit alphanumeric HUID. Use the BIS CARE app’s Verify HUID feature to check the HUID. For background on consumer guidance, see the BIS Common Consumer FAQ.

For hallmarked precious-metal articles, BIS says the bill or invoice should mention the description of each article, net precious-metal weight, purity in carat and fineness, and hallmarking charges. Check that those details describe the item you are buying, and keep an authentic invoice. BIS’s guidance is available in its Common Consumer FAQ.
What to do if marked purity is in doubt
BIS says consumers can seek purity testing at a BIS-recognized Assaying & Hallmarking Centre. Its consumer-protection page says that if hallmarked jewelry is found to be of lesser purity than marked, the buyer is entitled to compensation calculated as two times the amount of the difference for the sold item’s weight, plus testing charges. Confirm the current process with BIS before relying on that remedy, and retain the invoice for dispute or complaint handling.
