To estimate the after-tax return on a single crypto purchase and sale, subtract the purchase outlay, investment fees and tax attributable to the sale from the sale proceeds, then divide the result by the total invested outlay. Keep that performance calculation separate from taxable gain: under U.S. federal guidance, gain or loss generally equals the amount realized on a taxable disposition minus adjusted basis. The two figures answer different questions and may not match.

Calculate investment performance and taxable gain separately

Your investment return measures how your money and assets performed after costs. Taxable gain or loss is a tax calculation using tax-defined proceeds and basis. Start with both ledgers rather than treating one number as a substitute for the other.

Economic return for one purchase and one sale

For a single purchase and sale with no interim deposits, withdrawals or other cash flows, use:

After-tax profit = sale proceeds − acquisition outlay − all investment fees − tax attributable to the taxable disposition.

After-tax return (%) = after-tax profit ÷ total invested outlay × 100.

Use consistent amounts and include the fees you actually paid in the economic ledger. For example, a purchase fee belongs in the acquisition outlay or fee total, but not both. The same applies to sale fees. This arithmetic gives a simple investment return; it does not determine your tax bill.

Taxable gain or loss under U.S. federal guidance

For a U.S. federal capital-asset sale, the IRS defines gain or loss as the difference between adjusted basis and amount realized. In signed form:

Taxable gain or loss = amount realized − adjusted basis.

For a cash sale, amount realized generally starts with the cash received, adds the fair market value of any services received, and is reduced by digital-asset transaction costs allocable to the disposition. Basis generally starts with the asset’s U.S.-dollar cost; qualifying acquisition fees may be included in basis. See the IRS digital-asset FAQ, answer 52 and IRS virtual-currency FAQ.

This calculation is not the same as subtracting every economic cost from sale proceeds: tax rules specify which costs reduce amount realized or may be included in basis. Keep the tax calculation tied to the relevant transaction records and applicable tax year.

Classify fees by what they paid for

For economic performance, record every fee that reduced your wealth. For tax purposes, the treatment depends on the service and when the fee was paid—not simply on whether the exchange labels it a fee. The IRS describes digital-asset transaction costs as amounts paid in cash or property for services provided by another to effect a purchase, sale or disposition. Its examples include transaction and gas fees, transfer taxes and commissions. See IRS FAQ answer 53.

  • Fee to acquire: Preserve the amount and evidence of the service; certain qualifying acquisition costs may increase basis.
  • Fee to sell or otherwise dispose: Transaction costs allocable to the disposition reduce amount realized under the cited IRS guidance.
  • Fee to move assets between your own wallets or accounts: The IRS distinguishes this from a transaction cost that effects a purchase, sale or disposition. Do not automatically treat every transfer fee the same way as a trade fee.
  • Fee paid in crypto: Spending digital assets on a fee can itself be a disposition of those assets and may produce a separate gain or loss, even if the payment may qualify as a transaction cost. See IRS FAQ answer 53 and IRS FAQ answer 7.

Keep the fee amount, currency, date and purpose with the related transaction. That makes it easier to distinguish the cost of trading from the cost of moving or spending an asset.

Account for holding period without guessing a tax rate

Under the cited U.S. federal IRS guidance, a capital gain is short-term if the asset was held for one year or less, and long-term if held for more than one year. The holding period starts the day after acquisition and ends on the day of sale or exchange. Classification matters, but it does not by itself establish the tax owed. See the IRS virtual-currency FAQ.

There is no reliable universal tax-rate multiplier to apply to crypto profit. The cited sources explain federal mechanics, not your individual rate, state or local tax outcome, or rules outside the United States. Your circumstances and jurisdiction determine the tax calculation.

Use a different return method when cash flows vary

The simple percentage formula assumes one initial outlay and one final sale. If you made purchases at different times, added or withdrew funds, or received assets along the way, a single profit divided by total contributions can misrepresent performance because it ignores when money was invested. Choose a return convention that fits the question: a time-weighted measure focuses on asset performance across periods, while a money-weighted measure reflects the timing and size of your own cash flows. State which convention you use and preserve dates and amounts for every flow.

Keep records that support both calculations

The IRS says digital-asset records should document purchases, receipts, sales, exchanges, other dispositions or transfers, and fair market value in U.S. dollars where relevant. For gain or loss, its overview identifies the asset type, transaction date and time, units, fair market value at transaction time and basis. Keep exchange statements and wallet records that substantiate basis and unit identification. See IRS digital-assets guidance.

  • Record the date and time, asset and number of units for each transaction.
  • Save the U.S.-dollar value and basis information, including acquisition cost and relevant fees.
  • Keep evidence of proceeds, services received, fees, transfers and the purpose of each transaction.
  • Reconcile exchange records with wallet activity so the same units and costs are not omitted or counted twice.

Report taxable transactions on the relevant U.S. return

For individuals’ U.S. federal returns, sales and other capital transactions involving digital assets generally are calculated and reported on Form 8949 and summarized on Schedule D, subject to specified exceptions. Taxable transactions must be reported for the year they occur even if you do not receive an information return. Use the forms and instructions for the applicable tax year, since requirements and broker statements can change. See the IRS digital-asset FAQ.

Compare calculation tools by the work they actually handle

A spreadsheet or software tool is useful only if its output matches the question you need answered. Check whether it:

  • Separates economic return from taxable gain or loss.
  • Captures acquisition and disposition fees with their purpose and tax treatment.
  • Handles deposits, withdrawals and purchases at different times using a clearly identified return method.
  • Preserves wallet- and account-level records needed to support basis and unit identification.
  • Produces reporting appropriate to your jurisdiction and tax year.

IRS guidance establishes the federal tax and recordkeeping dimensions, but does not compare particular software providers.
