A genuine exchange of one stablecoin for another digital asset, with no cash balancing payment (soulte), is generally not taxed immediately for an individual under France’s private digital-asset regime. Tax is normally deferred until a later taxable disposal, such as selling for euros, buying a non-digital good, paying for a service, or making a digital-asset exchange that includes a soulte. That later gain or loss is calculated on your entire digital-asset portfolio with the official Form 2086 formula, not by assigning a separate gain to each token.
The result depends on the transaction’s consideration, whether the token qualifies as an actif numérique, your tax status, and the tax year. The calculations below follow the Direction générale des Finances publiques (DGFiP) Form 2086 notice for 2025 revenues filed in 2026.
First decide whether the stablecoin swap is taxable
French rules distinguish a deferred exchange from a taxable disposal. The label stablecoin is not enough by itself; the instrument must fall within the statutory definition of a digital asset, and the transaction must be examined for any cash or non-digital consideration.

No-soulte digital-asset exchange
Swapping one qualifying digital asset for another, with no euros or other cash balancing payment, generally benefits from a tax deferral. A US-dollar-pegged token exchanged for a euro-pegged token is an example if both are digital assets and neither party pays or receives a soulte. The swap does not by itself create the gain reported for that year.

Transactions treated as taxable disposals
| Transaction | Normal treatment for a private individual |
|---|---|
| Digital asset exchanged for euros or another legal tender | Taxable disposal |
| Digital asset used to buy a good other than a digital asset | Taxable disposal |
| Digital asset used to pay for a service | Taxable disposal |
| Digital asset exchanged for another digital asset with a soulte | Taxable disposal; the soulte is part of the consideration under the official rules |
| Digital asset exchanged for another digital asset without a soulte | Tax deferred, subject to the assets qualifying as digital assets and the holder being in the private regime |
A soulte is a cash balancing amount paid or received to equalize an exchange. A swap that appears to be crypto-to-crypto can therefore become taxable if one side also pays euros or another qualifying balancing amount.
Check whether the token is a digital asset
Stablecoin branding does not settle the legal classification. An instrument with unusual contractual, technical, or legal characteristics may require separate analysis. Do not assume that every token marketed as a stablecoin receives the digital-asset treatment; preserve its terms and obtain advice where its status is unclear.
Confirm that the private individual regime applies
The portfolio formula in this guide is for an individual managing digital assets as private wealth. French guidance separates that situation from activity that is commercial or conducted in conditions analogous to a professional business.
- Private asset management is generally reported under the private digital-asset regime and Form 2086.
- Commercial trading can fall under bénéfices industriels et commerciaux (BIC).
- An activity carried out in conditions analogous to a professional activity can fall under bénéfices non commerciaux (BNC).
Frequency alone does not answer the classification question. The scale, organization, financing, expertise, and manner of the activity can matter. If your trading resembles a business, do not apply the private-investor calculation without professional advice.
The official Form 2086 portfolio formula
For each taxable disposal, the 2026 Form 2086 notice for 2025 revenues gives this calculation:
Gross gain or loss = disposal price − [total acquisition price × disposal price ÷ global portfolio value]
In mathematical notation:
Plus or moins-value brute = Prix de cession − [Prix total d'acquisition × Prix de cession / Valeur globale du portefeuille]

The calculation allocates a proportional part of the portfolio’s acquisition cost to the disposal. It is not a simple token-by-token purchase-price calculation.
Disposal price
The disposal price is the real value received for the taxable transaction. It can include a soulte received and be reduced by a soulte paid. Substantiated expenses directly borne for the disposal may reduce the disposal-price term. The official treatment of fees has an important qualification: disposal expenses can reduce that term, but fees do not reduce the disposal price used in the ratio of disposal price to total portfolio value.
Total acquisition price
This is the qualifying acquisition cost of the portfolio, not merely the historical cost of the token that you sold. It can include fiat amounts paid to acquire digital assets and qualifying values of goods or services exchanged for them. The amount is reduced by capital fractions already used in earlier taxable disposals and adjusted for relevant prior soultes under the rules.
Global portfolio value
Use the value of all relevant digital assets and related rights held by the household immediately before the taxable disposal. The 2026 notice includes assets held on exchanges, on a personal server, and in offline storage. Assets outside the platform where the sale occurs still belong in the global portfolio value.
What the formula does not do
It does not automatically reset the acquisition cost of a stablecoin when you receive it in a deferred swap. A no-soulte exchange is deferred; the portfolio’s acquisition-cost history continues to matter when a later taxable disposal occurs. A token-by-token shortcut can therefore produce the wrong result.
Worked example of the calculation
Assume that, immediately before a taxable disposal:
- Total qualifying acquisition price of the portfolio: €10,000
- Disposal price: €2,000
- Global value of all relevant digital assets: €20,000
Apply the official formula:
€2,000 − (€10,000 × €2,000 ÷ €20,000) = €2,000 − €1,000 = €1,000 gross gain

This illustration explains the arithmetic only. It is not a tax calculation for a particular taxpayer, and the inputs must be reconstructed from that taxpayer’s transactions, valuations, qualifying costs, and earlier disposals.
How earlier stablecoin swaps affect a later sale
A deferred swap still matters for your records. Keep the date, assets exchanged, quantities, valuation evidence, and any payment made alongside the swap. When you later sell or otherwise dispose of an asset, the official portfolio calculation takes account of the portfolio’s total acquisition price and the capital fractions already allocated to earlier taxable disposals.
Deferred exchange without a soulte
Do not treat the market value of the stablecoin received as an automatic new purchase cost that replaces the portfolio history. Record the exchange so that the continuing portfolio position can be reconstructed under the Form 2086 method.
Exchange with a soulte
A soulte changes the analysis. The consideration and the acquisition-cost adjustments must reflect the soulte paid or received under the official rules. Separate the digital-asset exchange from the cash balancing amount in your ledger.
How fees are treated
Retain invoices, platform statements, and blockchain records for every fee. The DGFiP and BOFiP guidance distinguishes several effects:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Those expenses do not reduce the disposal price used in the disposal-price-to-global-portfolio-value ratio.
- Platform and network-validation fees can be subject to an administrative simplification in certain otherwise taxable disposals; apply the conditions stated in the current guidance rather than assuming every fee is deductible.
Fees paid during a deferred token-for-token exchange should still be recorded. Whether a charge is part of the relevant acquisition or disposal calculation depends on its nature and the transaction in which it arose.
Step-by-step method for calculating and reporting
- Identify your status. Decide whether the activity is private asset management or has professional-like characteristics that could place it under BIC or BNC.
- Classify every transaction. Mark each event as a no-soulte digital-asset exchange, a sale for legal tender, a purchase of a non-digital good, a payment for a service, or an exchange involving a soulte.
- Verify asset classification. Keep documentation showing why each instrument is treated as a digital asset. Escalate unusual stablecoins or other instruments for advice.
- Build the portfolio ledger. Consolidate exchange accounts, self-hosted wallets, personal servers, and offline storage. Record timestamps, quantities, acquisition amounts, transfers, fees, and valuations.
- Reconstruct the total acquisition price. Include qualifying acquisition costs and apply the adjustments for prior taxable disposals and relevant soultes.
- Value the complete portfolio immediately before each taxable disposal. Use a consistent, supportable valuation method and retain the time and source of each valuation.
- Apply Form 2086’s formula to each taxable disposal. Use the disposal price, total acquisition price, and global portfolio value for that event; do not substitute the cost of only the token sold.
- Net the year’s private-regime results. Combine gains and losses that are of the same digital-asset nature for the tax year.
- Complete Form 2086 with the annual income-tax return. The net gain flows to box 3AN; a net loss flows to box 3BN.
- Check foreign-account reporting. If you held an account with a digital-asset platform located abroad, consider the separate online reporting obligation and Form 3916-3916 bis for paper declarations.
The €305 threshold and what it actually measures
The threshold is based on annual gross disposal prices, not on the amount of gain. The 2026 Form 2086 notice for 2025 revenues states that gains are exempt when total annual disposal prices, excluding no-soulte digital-asset exchanges, do not exceed €305. When the threshold is exceeded, the applicable disposals fall under the regime.

That is not a €305 profit allowance. Add the gross prices of the relevant taxable disposals for the year; do not add only your gains. The tax-year version of Form 2086 controls, so check the notice for the year you are filing.
DGFiP guidance also states that the Form 2086 detail is required even when the relevant disposal prices are below the threshold. Keep the calculation and submit the required detail rather than treating the threshold as permission to omit the form.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How losses work under the private regime
A private-regime loss can offset only gains of the same digital-asset nature in the same tax year. It cannot be carried forward to a later year and cannot be applied to gains from another category of asset. Track each year’s net result separately and preserve the underlying disposal calculations.
Common errors and how to correct them
Taxing every stablecoin swap immediately
Error: treating every token-for-token exchange as a sale. Correction: first check whether both assets are digital assets and whether any soulte or non-digital consideration was involved. A no-soulte exchange is generally deferred for a private holder.
Using the cost of the token sold as the whole cost basis
Error: subtracting one token’s purchase price from its sale price. Correction: use the portfolio-wide formula and include the total acquisition price and global portfolio value.

Error: comparing €305 with the year’s net gain. Correction: compare it with the annual gross prices of taxable disposals, excluding deferred no-soulte exchanges.
Assuming a loss can be carried forward
Error: saving a private-regime digital-asset loss for a later year or using it against another asset class. Correction: apply it only against same-kind digital-asset gains in that tax year.

Records to keep
A defensible Form 2086 calculation requires more than a final exchange statement. Keep:
- Exchange and wallet addresses, account statements, and transaction IDs
- Date and time of each acquisition, transfer, swap, disposal, and soulte
- Quantities and asset identifiers, including the stablecoin’s terms where classification is uncertain
- Fiat purchase amounts and records of goods or services exchanged for digital assets
- Valuation evidence for each taxable disposal and the complete portfolio immediately beforehand
- Trading, network, and platform fees, with invoices or statements
- Calculations showing capital fractions used in prior taxable disposals
- Evidence supporting any foreign-platform account and its reporting status
Reconcile transfers between your own wallets so that a movement of assets is not mistaken for a disposal. Keep the original data as well as the spreadsheet or software output used to produce Form 2086.
When to obtain tailored advice
Get advice before filing if the stablecoin’s legal status is uncertain, a swap included a cash or non-cash balancing payment, you provide liquidity or other services, your trading is organized like a business, records are incomplete, or you held assets through multiple foreign platforms. The private-regime formula is precise, but it cannot resolve missing facts about the asset, consideration, tax status, or valuation.
