To spot a Bitcoin golden cross, calculate a short-period moving average and a longer-period moving average from the same price series and chart interval. On a daily chart, the familiar setup is the 50-day average crossing above the 200-day average. The result depends on whether you use simple or exponential averages, which Bitcoin price data you select, and whether you wait for the daily bar to close.
What a Bitcoin moving average measures
A moving average smooths a series of prices across a selected number of intervals. On a daily chart using closing prices, an N-day average is based on the latest N daily closes. As a new close enters the calculation, the oldest close in the window drops out for a simple moving average.
For a reproducible chart, specify the Bitcoin market or price series, chart interval, average type, and period lengths. A “50-day” average on one exchange’s BTC price may differ from the same setting on another source. Likewise, a daily crossover and an hourly crossover describe different horizons and should not be treated as equivalent.

How to calculate a simple moving average (SMA)
An N-period SMA gives every closing price in its window equal weight. If closet is the current interval’s close, then:

SMAN(t) = (closet + closet−1 + … + closet−N+1) / N
For a 50/200 daily setup, calculate a 50-close SMA and a 200-close SMA for each daily bar. Each value uses that day’s close and the preceding 49 or 199 daily closes, respectively. The 50/200 pairing is a common convention, not a requirement of the golden-cross definition.

- BUILT FOR YOUR MARKET, FUTURES, STOCKS, FOREX, OPTIONS & CRYPTO: 4X is a mindset and process journal, not a strategy tool tied to one instrument. The plan, the trade log, the deep dive and the weekly review work the same whether you trade ES, EURUSD, SPY or BTC. Traders use it across all five markets every day.
- THE 2026 EDITION, REBUILT FROM TRADER FEEDBACK: Same trusted system, better in every way. An extra daily page for more room to log the session. Weekly reviews now grouped with each week's trades, so no more flipping back and forth. Crisp, darker print that's easy on the eyes after hours on a screen. You never stare at a blank page.
- RATE YOUR EXECUTION, NOT YOUR RESULT: Your platform tracks the P&L. Nothing tracks the why. Log energy, sleep and mindset before the open; grade every trade A to F on whether you followed your plan, not on whether it won; then face the pattern every weekend with START / STOP / IMPROVE / CONTINUE. That review habit is the edge. You're 42% more likely to hit a goal you've written down.

How to calculate an exponential moving average (EMA)
An EMA gives more weight to recent closes while allowing older prices to retain diminishing influence. Its smoothing factor is α = 2 / (N + 1), and the recurring calculation is:
EMAt = (closet − EMAt−1) × α + EMAt−1
The calculation needs a starting EMA. A common approach seeds it with an N-period SMA; different initialization choices and the amount of available history can slightly change early plotted values. An EMA and an SMA with the same period can therefore take different paths and cross on different bars. TradingView’s moving-average documentation describes these calculation methods and their use.

How to spot and confirm a golden cross
A golden cross is the point at which a shorter moving average crosses above a longer one. On the conventional daily 50/200 setup, the first confirmed bar where the 50-day average moves from at or below the 200-day average to above it is the golden cross. The term does not, by itself, specify SMA versus EMA, a data provider, or a confirmation rule.
- Choose the price series. Select the BTC market or index you intend to analyze, and keep that source consistent.
- Set the interval. Choose daily candles for a daily 50/200 comparison; use the same interval for both averages.
- Select the average type and lengths. Apply either SMA or EMA to both lines, using 50 and 200 periods if you want the familiar setup.
- Check completed bars. Inspect the actual line values after the bar closes. A crossover visible during an unfinished bar may disappear before its close.
- Record the context if sharing a signal. Note the data source and timezone along with the date, average type, periods, and interval.
Charting tools such as TradingView can plot moving averages; its documentation explains the indicator settings and calculations. If comparing charts, match the underlying choices rather than relying on the label “golden cross” alone.
How SMA, EMA, periods, and intervals change the signal
| Choice | What it changes | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| SMA versus EMA | SMA weights prices in its window evenly; EMA gives recent prices greater weight. | The lines can cross on different bars. There is no universally superior type established by the cited sources. |
| Lookback pair | Longer periods generally represent a slower, broader view; shorter periods react more quickly. | A shorter pair represents a different horizon, not simply a better version of 50/200. |
| Chart interval | Daily, hourly, and other bars summarize different spans of price activity. | State the interval explicitly; a daily cross is not the same signal as an hourly cross. |
| Price source | The selected exchange or index supplies the closes used in both calculations. | Different sources may produce different values and crossover timing; keep the source consistent. |
What a golden cross can—and cannot—tell you
The golden cross is a bullish-style, trend-following observation: the shorter average has risen above the longer one. It is based on past prices, so it can occur after a substantial move has already begun and can later reverse. TradingView cautions that moving-average crossover systems combine lagging indicators: “Both of these indicators react only to what has already happened and are not designed to make predictions.” It notes that such systems work best in a strong trend, but that does not eliminate the possibility of loss.
Do not treat the pattern as proof that Bitcoin will rise or as a standalone buy instruction. A Bitcoin-focused Cointelegraph explainer discusses false signals and cautions against following the pattern blindly, but its historical examples are secondary reporting rather than a transparent, independently reproducible success-rate study. The sources cited here do not establish a reliable Bitcoin golden-cross success rate or a current signal; either claim would require a defined price series, close convention, interval, average type, and reproducible analysis.
