To buy Wesfarmers shares in Australia, open and fund an account with a broker that can trade ASX shares, search for Wesfarmers under ticker WES, choose an order type, and review the trade confirmation and charges. Compare the broker’s current fees and terms before placing an order; this is a how-to guide, not a recommendation to buy WES.
1. Confirm you have the right Wesfarmers listing
Wesfarmers says its shares trade on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) under the code WES. When searching in a broker’s platform, check that the result names Wesfarmers and identifies the ASX listing before entering an order. A matching ticker alone is not a reason to skip that check. A share price is a moving market quote, not a fixed purchase price. Wesfarmers’ investor centre displayed AUD 76.22 per share, up AUD 0.49 (0.65%), at 16:10:19 AEST on 2 October 2026. That dated quote is only an example; check a current quote when you trade. Wesfarmers share price
2. Choose a broker for ASX access
You need a broker that can arrange ASX trades. ASX says retail investors need a CHESS-sponsoring broker to buy or sell ASX shares, and Wesfarmers directs people wishing to trade its shares to a licensed stockbroker or online broker. ASX: buying and selling shares · ASX: CHESS FAQs

Compare the service and its full fee schedule against how you plan to trade. Online brokers are generally self-directed; full-service brokers may place trades and offer advice or research, and usually charge more. These are broad service categories, not current quotes for any named broker. ASIC Moneysmart: online share trading
- ASX access and CHESS sponsorship: Confirm the broker supports ASX securities and clarify the holding arrangement it provides.
- Cost for your intended trade: Compare brokerage for the order size you expect to place, as well as any account, platform or inactivity fees. A fee that is modest on a large order can take a larger proportion of a small one.
- Order controls: Check that the platform offers the order type you intend to use and explains how it works.
- Funding and settlement: Find out how to fund the account, how payment is handled, and what settlement instructions apply.
- Service and records: Decide whether you want execution-only trading or advice and research, and check what trade confirmations and tax records are available.
Brokerage is commonly charged per trade. Moneysmart says online brokers often charge a flat amount for smaller trades and sometimes a percentage for larger ones; some charge one flat fee regardless of trade size. Full-service brokers generally charge higher percentage-based fees. For a domestic WES trade, overseas foreign-exchange fees are generally not relevant, but the broker’s own fee schedule is authoritative. ASIC Moneysmart: online share trading
3. Open and fund the account
Complete the broker’s application and identity checks, then arrange funding or confirm its linked-bank and settlement process. Moneysmart says online account opening often takes under 15 minutes, while identity checks may take a day or two; this is a general estimate, not a guarantee for a particular provider. 4. Select a market or limit order
After choosing WES, enter the quantity you want to buy and select an order type. A market order seeks to buy at the next available price, but it does not set a maximum price. A limit order sets the highest price you are willing to pay; it will execute only if the market reaches that price, and execution is not guaranteed. Read the broker’s order explanation before using other order types. ASIC Moneysmart: online share trading
- Search for Wesfarmers or WES and verify the company name and ASX listing.
- Enter the share quantity and choose market or limit.
- If using a limit order, enter the maximum price per share you will pay.
- Review the order’s estimated cost, applicable brokerage and other displayed charges, then submit only if the details are correct.
5. Check execution, settlement and records
Once the order is executed, check the confirmation for the number of shares, execution price and fees, and keep it with your records for tax time. ASX says payment is due within two days after execution. Separately, Moneysmart describes proceeds from an online share sale arriving two business days after trade day; that sale-proceeds description should not be confused with the payment obligation for a purchase. 6. Understand CHESS and existing holdings
CHESS sponsorship concerns how a holding is sponsored; it is not the act of placing a new market buy order. Wesfarmers’ 2025 annual report describes issuer-sponsored holdings as sponsored by Wesfarmers and says they do not require stockbroker sponsorship. For help with an existing Wesfarmers holding, the company identifies Computershare as its share registry; some holder information requires an SRN or HIN. WES shares can fall in value, and you can lose money if you sell for less than you paid.
