To reduce the risk of buying a counterfeit Nintendo DS game, check the listing, compare the cartridge’s front and rear codes, inspect its printing, and confirm the region and included items. No single visual clue proves a cartridge is genuine: ask for better evidence or walk away if key details do not match.
Assess the listing before you contact the seller
- Confirm what is being sold. Check the exact game, region, language, condition, and whether the listing includes a case or manual. These details help you compare like with like.
- Look at the price and seller’s other listings. Nintendo advises caution when a site offers many Nintendo products at low prices or when an item costs well below average. Treat that as a reason to investigate, not proof of a fake.
- Look for photos of the actual cartridge. Stock images do not show the item you will receive. Ask for clear pictures of the label on the front and the markings on the back if either side is missing.
- Check transaction protections. Review the seller’s feedback, return terms, and the marketplace’s buyer-protection options. These can help if a purchase goes wrong, but they do not authenticate the game.
Nintendo Support’s advice is simple: “Use caution when purchasing used games.” Nintendo’s guidance on spotting counterfeit games recommends considering the product, seller, price, and packaging together.
Compare the cartridge’s front and rear markings
Use photos sharp enough to read the label and the small molded or printed marks on the back. A DS-specific guide from Nintendo Life describes a front label code that starts with “NTR,” followed by a four-character product number and a region code.

- Compare the four-character product number on the front with the corresponding number on the back. A mismatch is a strong warning sign.
- Check that the region designation and game version match what the listing claims and what you want to play.
The rear marking can be faint and may wear with handling. If it is missing or hard to read, that fact alone does not establish that the cartridge is counterfeit; ask for a sharper photo or weigh the other evidence. Conversely, matching codes are not authentication: counterfeiters can copy identifiers.

Inspect the label and shell in context
Look at the label’s sharpness, alignment, artwork, and Nintendo or patent markings. Blurry art, unusually subdued or incorrect-looking logos, and inconsistencies with a known genuine copy of the same title and region are reasons to pause. A convincing-looking label is not a guarantee, since print can be copied.
Some Pokémon DS cartridges have special black shells that can appear purple when held to light, according to Nintendo Life’s examples. This is a title-specific cross-check, not a rule for every black cartridge or a stand-alone test. Do not reject or accept a cartridge based on that feature alone.

Judge the case and manual separately
A used game may be sold without its original case or manual, and missing packaging by itself does not prove the cartridge is fake. Counterfeit packaging and reproduced manuals also exist. If completeness matters, ask whether the materials are original and request clear photos of the case, inserts, and manual rather than assuming they are genuine because a cartridge looks plausible.

- Consider buying when the listing is clear, the seller provides useful photos, the codes and region are consistent with a reliable reference, and the price and transaction terms make sense. This lowers uncertainty but cannot guarantee authenticity.
- Ask for more evidence when a photo is missing or too blurry, a rear marking is faint, or the listing leaves the region or included items unclear. Request specific front and back photos of the actual cartridge.
- Walk away when the front and rear product numbers conflict, the seller will not provide basic photos, the description contradicts the images, or several warning signs stack up. Do not let one reassuring detail outweigh multiple inconsistencies.
If a DS game triggers a DSi error
Nintendo describes a narrow diagnostic for a particular error message while playing a DS game card on a DSi. Nintendo says the card is likely counterfeit if it works in an original DS or DS Lite despite that DSi error; if it also fails on those systems, it may instead be defective. See Nintendo’s DSi error guidance. This test applies to that error scenario; a game booting on another console is not a general authenticity test.
