If the Super Bowl’s national broadcast inventory is sold out, contact the advertising sales team for that game’s rights holder and ask whether cancellations or late openings exist. Do not assume there is a public waitlist or that a sold-out spot can be bought elsewhere. If no game placement is available, ask for a written proposal for other NFL programming, event integrations, or custom content—and compare what each option actually delivers before treating it as a substitute.
Start by confirming who sells the game you want
Super Bowl broadcast rights rotate among media partners, and NFL games are distributed across broadcast and streaming services. The seller therefore depends on the game year and the relevant platform. Start with the NFL’s ways to watch information and its media-rights announcement, then confirm the current event’s seller and territory directly with that seller. Do not assume last year’s network handles this year’s inventory.
“Sold out” describes a seller’s stated inventory for a particular event and platform; it does not establish that every placement around Super Bowl week or the wider NFL season is unavailable. For example, Disney Advertising said on August 5, 2026 that Super Bowl LXI inventory had sold out, reporting 58 brands across 34 distinct categories. Its announcement also described integrations and custom content across NFL events and Super Bowl week, including an ESPN Beach activation. Those formats are not evidence that a particular opportunity remains available.

Ask about late openings, then request alternatives
- Contact the rights holder’s ad sales team. Ask whether cancellations or late inventory exist for the specific game, market, platform, and format you want. Public sell-out announcements do not establish a waitlist or a process for releasing inventory.
- If the answer is no, ask for other opportunities in writing. Possible formats include other NFL-season inventory, event integrations, and custom content. Broadcasters have described these commercial formats, but availability depends on the seller and date.
- Request the current event guide. Ask for technical specifications, creative-review and standards processes, substantiation requirements, delivery instructions, and deadlines. NBCUniversal’s Super Bowl LX guide directed advertisers to confirm details with their NBCU sales representative; its February 2026 deadlines have passed and should not be reused for a later event.
For a national game placement, be explicit that you mean a commercial in the shared national broadcast break. A streaming-only insertion, a local or regional spot, a pregame or postgame placement, a sponsorship, and a branded integration are different products. A CFTC-hosted filing distinguishes shared official broadcast commercial breaks from streaming-only ads and examples of sponsorship or promotion; it is a classification document, not a rate card.

Before treating an offer as a Super Bowl commercial—or approving a budget—get written confirmation of the event year, territory, seller, platform, format, placement, duration, audience or geography, measurement, creative requirements, deadlines, price, and package obligations. Verify any availability and delivery schedule directly with the seller; a sell-out announcement or an older event guide cannot confirm a current opening.
