Buy a physical game only after you have checked evidence of the actual item, the seller’s recent history, the full cost and return terms, and the protection available for that specific transaction. Pay through marketplace checkout, save the listing and messages, and note the deadline for raising a problem. Marketplace rules vary, so a familiar platform name alone does not guarantee that a purchase is covered.
How can you tell if a used game listing is legitimate?
Start with the listing itself, not the star rating. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises buyers to look for pictures of the actual item: “If you don’t see pictures of the actual item, you can’t check its condition or be sure the seller really has it.” A stock image does not show the state of a used game or prove that the seller has it in hand. - Inspect the photos. Look for clear images of the game and the components included in the sale, such as its case, cover art, manual, or other parts you expect. This helps you compare the item with the description; it is not an official authentication test.
- Read the condition and completeness terms. Check whether the game is used, refurbished, sold “as is,” or incomplete. Confirm the edition, region or version if those details matter to your console or collection.
- Review the seller in context. Read recent buyer comments and look at reviewer context rather than relying on the star score alone; ratings and reviews can be misleading or fake. Search the marketplace and seller name alongside terms such as “complaint” or “review.” Check the seller’s contact details, too.
- Ask before you buy. Request clarification about condition, included parts, region/version, and whether the photos show the actual item. Keep the question and answer in the marketplace’s message system.
- Investigate unusually low prices. A very low price for an expensive item is a reason to look more closely, not proof of a bargain. The FTC identifies unusually low prices as a possible warning sign of counterfeit goods.
No universal authentication method for physical games is established here. For an older, rare, or high-priced release, do not treat photos or a seller’s assurances as certification; seek additional platform-specific information before committing.

Compare the transaction as a whole, not just the asking price. Two listings for the same game can differ in completeness, shipping cost, seller responsiveness, return terms, and whether the platform’s protection applies to that seller and payment route.

There is no sound basis for naming one marketplace as safest in general: protections differ among operators and transactions. Read the rules for the exact item and seller before choosing.
Can you pay outside the marketplace?
No. Keep the purchase and payment within the marketplace’s supported checkout flow. The FTC warns: “Don’t buy from anyone who wants you to pay outside the marketplace’s payment system.” Moving payment elsewhere can cost you the marketplace’s protections. Be especially wary if a seller demands a wire transfer, gift card, or cryptocurrency.

Where available, a credit card or a secure payment option with buyer protection may offer another route for recourse. That does not guarantee a refund: coverage and dispute deadlines depend on the payment provider and transaction. Check those terms before paying.

Before checkout, keep copies of the listing, description, item photos, return and protection terms, order confirmation, and messages with the seller. If a problem arises, this record helps you show what was offered and what you received. Save evidence in a form you can still access if the listing changes or disappears.

What should you do if the game never arrives or is not as described?
- Compare the delivery with the saved listing. When the package arrives, check the game and included components against the description and photos. If anything is missing or materially different, photograph the discrepancy.
- Contact the seller promptly through the marketplace. Describe the issue clearly and keep the exchange in platform messages.
- Use the marketplace’s process if it is unresolved. Report non-delivery or a mismatch through the platform’s stated return, refund, or buyer-protection process. Check the deadline rather than waiting indefinitely for a seller response.
- Contact your card issuer if you paid by card. Ask about its dispute process and filing deadline; payment-provider timelines may differ from the marketplace’s.
- Report suspected dishonest conduct. Report it to the marketplace. In the United States, the FTC also accepts reports and directs consumers to their state attorney general.
How long do you have to file a marketplace claim?
There is no single deadline for every marketplace or payment method. Before purchasing, find the applicable last day to request a return, ask the marketplace for help, or dispute a card payment. Read the terms for the item and seller: eligibility, exclusions, waiting periods, and claim windows can vary.
Example: Amazon Pay’s A-to-z Guarantee
Amazon Pay’s policy says eligible qualifying third-party transactions may be covered for timely delivery and item condition, including certain cases of non-delivery, damage, defects, or material differences from the description. The policy also sets conditions and exclusions, so it should not be treated as blanket coverage for every Amazon marketplace order or another platform. For an item that is damaged, defective, or materially different, the page says to contact the seller within 14 days after receiving it. Does seller verification mean the game is authentic?
No. In the United States, the INFORM Consumers Act took effect on June 27, 2023. It requires covered online marketplaces to verify certain seller information and includes disclosure and reporting duties for qualifying high-volume sellers. The requirements have thresholds and exemptions; they do not mean every seller must display a street address.
