To reduce the risk of buying counterfeit Magic: The Gathering cards or resealed products, verify the exact listing and seller, use a payment and dispute process you understand, and save the order records. For sealed products sold online in North America, Wizards of the Coast recommends reputable dealers and identifies an Authorized Internet Retailer logo as a signal that a store is approved to sell sealed products online. No seller badge or packaging check guarantees that an individual item is genuine.
Choose the seller and listing before you pay
Start with the seller behind the listing, not just the name of the marketplace. Prefer a known local game store, an authorized online retailer when Wizards’ North American sealed-product guidance applies, or an established marketplace with a documented dispute process. Check seller history and feedback, delivery estimates, return terms, and how to escalate a problem. Keep payment and messages within the marketplace rather than moving the transaction elsewhere.
Read the full listing and confirm the card or product is exactly what you intend to buy. Check the card name, set or edition, language, finish, condition, and quantity. Make sure the seller is offering a genuine card rather than a proxy or playtest item; Wizards specifically advises buyers to read auction fine print and not mistake proxies for originals. Save a copy of the listing and relevant correspondence.
Compare the asking price with other offers, but use price only as a reason to look more closely—not as proof either way. The official guidance cited here gives no reliable price threshold for identifying counterfeits. It also provides no current, authoritative percentage for how often marketplace MTG cards are counterfeit.

What a WPN badge on TCGplayer means
TCGplayer lets buyers filter for Wizards Play Network (WPN) sellers. TCGplayer describes these as local game stores participating in Wizards’ official network, and says the badge signals a Wizards-verified local game store. That is a useful way to assess the seller’s identity; it is not a claim that TCGplayer or Wizards has authenticated each card in the seller’s inventory. TCGplayer’s WPN badge guidance
Check sealed boxes and booster packs carefully
Wizards’ online Authorized Internet Retailer logo guidance applies to sealed products sold online in North America. It does not establish a universal credential for individual secondary-market singles, every region, or every product type. Where that scope fits your purchase, use the logo as one seller-screening signal alongside the store’s identity and listing details. Wizards’ legitimate-product guidance

For booster boxes and packs, Wizards recommends buying from reputable dealers and checking the Wizards of the Coast stamp and plastic seal on boxes. It also advises inspecting packs for signs of resealing, including vertical heat striations in seals. These are warning checks, not proof that the contents are genuine or untouched. If a listing seems fraudulent, Wizards’ advice is direct: “If you suspect the product is fraudulent, don’t buy it.”
Do not treat shrink-wrap, a stamp, or one visual feature as conclusive authentication. If a sealed item arrives in a condition that conflicts with its listing, preserve the packaging and use the seller or marketplace dispute route. Check the applicable return terms before opening a sealed product: TCGplayer states that opened sealed items cannot be returned under its policy terms. TCGplayer’s refund and return policy

Take extra care with expensive or unusual singles
When edition, condition, identity, or alteration status is unclear, ask for clear, current photos of the exact card being sold. Compare the images with the description and retain both with the listing. For a high-value purchase you cannot assess confidently, consider asking a reputable local game store or another trusted specialist to inspect it in person before the return or dispute window closes.
There is no universal authentication procedure established in the current official guidance for every printing, foil treatment, or altered card. Wizards’ 2004 “Buyer Beware” article discusses water and bend tests but warns that buyers use them at their own risk and not on foil cards. Because those tests can damage a card and the article is historical, do not rely on them as a definitive modern check. Wizards’ “Buyer Beware” article

What to do if an order is missing, misdescribed, or suspect
- Preserve evidence. Photograph the unopened package and its contents, keep the card and packaging, and save the listing, receipt, seller messages, tracking information, and delivery date.
- Contact the seller through the order page. If the issue is not resolved, use the marketplace’s official escalation channel. Avoid taking the dispute off-platform.
- Check the marketplace’s deadline and claim process promptly. Rules differ by platform; do not assume one marketplace’s policy applies to another or to a private sale.
TCGplayer orders
For missing or not-as-described orders, TCGplayer says buyers must report the issue within 30 calendar days after the estimated delivery date to qualify for its stated refund or replacement process. Suspected counterfeit cards require a dedicated claim. TCGplayer says it provides a prepaid label and must receive the card for review; its policy says it will provide a full refund if the card is counterfeit. Follow the current instructions in the claim rather than mailing a suspect card independently. TCGplayer Safeguard and TCGplayer’s refund and return policy

Wizards is not the buyer’s authentication or refund service
Wizards says it does not replace counterfeit cards or provide a card verification service: “Please note that Wizards of the Coast does not have a card verification service.” Its guidance points people suspecting counterfeits toward law enforcement and fraud-reporting resources, including an eBay Fraud Alert for relevant eBay purchases. Wizards says submitted cards are not returned and it will not notify the submitter of the outcome, so its reporting route is not a substitute for pursuing a seller or marketplace remedy.
