To buy gold safely, identify the exact product, compare its full price and resale terms across established dealers, verify the seller and product, and avoid pressure or delivery schemes. Gold bullion is not risk-free: premiums, fees, storage costs, and price changes can all affect what you recover when you sell.
What does “buying gold safely” mean?
For physical gold, safety means reducing the risk of overpaying, receiving a product that does not match what you ordered, or losing money to fraud or unclear storage arrangements. It does not mean that gold’s price is stable or that a purchase is guaranteed to make money.
Bullion coins and bars are generally valued primarily by their gold content: weight and fineness. Collectible or numismatic coins may also be priced for rarity, condition, or age. The CFTC and FINRA caution that “semi-numismatic” has no special meaning and can be used to justify inflated markups. If your goal is to own gold bullion, ask the seller to identify the product as bullion and explain any price above its metal value.

Precious-metal prices fluctuate. A purchase can lose value, and the dealer’s selling price, buyback price, spread, and other charges affect whether you could sell at a gain. The CFTC and FINRA report that over the past decade the CFTC charged numerous companies with selling overpriced precious metals, alleging more than $500 million in fraudulent sales. That is the agencies’ reported allegation total, not a finding that every sale involved proven losses.

Where can you buy gold coins or bars?
You can buy through an established local coin or bullion business or an identifiable online dealer. The United States Mint does not sell bullion coins directly to the public; it distributes them through authorized purchasers and downstream dealers. Its bullion coin program explains that distribution route. The Mint’s authorized-purchaser directory can help you locate firms in the supply chain, but it is not an endorsement or guarantee. Some listed purchasers do not sell to retail customers.
Retail metal dealers are not regulated at the federal level, according to the CFTC and FINRA. Treat a directory listing or a polished website as a starting point, not proof that a firm is trustworthy. If someone claims to be an investment professional or an IRA expert, verify the person’s registration and disciplinary history with the appropriate regulator.

How to compare coins and bars
There is no universal winner. Compare the exact product and transaction terms rather than assuming that coins are always easier to sell or that bars are always cheaper.
| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Total price | What is the complete price for this exact product, including premium, commissions, shipping, and other fees? How does it compare with the current spot value of the gold content? |
| Resale terms | What is the dealer’s current buyback quote for this same product? What is the difference between the dealer’s selling and buying prices? |
| Weight and divisibility | Does the product’s size suit the amount you intend to buy or potentially sell? The Mint lists American Eagle gold bullion coins in one-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce, and tenth-ounce weights. |
| Product specifications | Who issued or refined it? What are its fineness, exact gold content, weight, and dimensions? What guarantee of precious-metal content or third-party certification applies? |
| Holding costs | Are shipping, storage, insurance, or account and custodian charges included, or billed separately? |
The spot price is a baseline, not the price you will necessarily pay. The CFTC and FINRA explain that a dealer sells metal above spot and buys it back below spot. Ask the dealer to show how the premium is calculated and get the retail price, fees, and buyback quote in writing. Compare multiple dealers: spreads and charges are seller-specific and change over time.

How to check a gold dealer and complete a purchase
- Research the business. Check its physical address, operating history, independent reviews and complaints, and your state attorney general’s complaint resources. Verify any claimed professional registration or disciplinary record with the relevant regulator.
- Identify the exact product. Record the metal, issuer or refiner, weight, fineness, exact gold content, and quoted price. Compare the product’s gold value with current spot and ask how the premium is calculated.
- Get the full terms in writing. Before committing, request the total price, commissions and fees, and the dealer’s buyback price. Clarify delivery, shipping, return and cancellation terms, and whether storage or insurance is included or charged separately.
- Understand any storage arrangement. For allocated or stored metal, ask where it will be held and what documents verify your ownership. Understand what you own and how it is held rather than relying on an account statement alone.
- Check the item on arrival. Compare the package and product with your invoice and the issuer’s published specifications. If you still have doubts about authenticity, consult a qualified independent professional instead of relying on an improvised test.
Red flags that should stop a purchase
- Unsolicited approaches: Be wary of unexpected calls, messages, or pitches urging you to buy precious metals.
- Urgency or guaranteed returns: Walk away from “limited-time” pressure, claims that a profit is guaranteed, or demands to act before you can review the terms.
- Leverage or financing: Avoid a deal that encourages borrowing or using equity to buy metal without fully understanding the risks and costs. The CFTC warns that financed and stored-metal arrangements can create additional risks.
- Unclear pricing: Do not proceed if the seller will not identify the product, explain its premium, provide the full fees, or state the buyback terms in writing.
- Unverified sellers: Avoid pop-up sellers, strangers on discussion boards, and sellers whose identity or business history you cannot establish.
- Courier or handoff instructions: If an unexpected caller claims you must buy gold bars and hand them to a courier or another person to protect your money, stop contact. The FTC identifies this as a scam; legitimate government agents do not ask you to buy and deliver gold bars.
What if you are considering gold in an IRA?
A self-directed IRA that holds bullion involves more than choosing a coin or bar. Fees, storage, custodians, tax treatment, and rollover rules add complexity and depend on the transaction. The CFTC and FINRA say that in some gold or silver IRA fraud cases, victims had one-third to one-half of their savings drained by markups, fees, and commissions; that figure describes some fraud cases, not a typical bullion purchase. Consult a qualified tax or financial professional before changing retirement-account arrangements.
