You can access the Japanese Nintendo eShop from outside Japan by using a Nintendo Account set to Japan, linked to a Switch user, on an internet-connected Nintendo Switch. For funding, Nintendo documents prepaid cards and prepaid numbers, but it does not confirm that a foreign-issued credit card or foreign PayPal account will work. Check the account and code region before buying; region changes can affect balances, renewals, and preorders.
What you need before opening the Japanese eShop
Nintendo says the country/region setting on your Nintendo Account determines which eShop opens on the Switch. Nintendo Japan’s eShop instructions specify an internet-connected Switch, a Nintendo Account linked to a Switch user, and the account country/region set to Japan. See Nintendo’s eShop country guidance and Nintendo Japan’s eShop requirements.

Check the consequences before changing your account region
Before changing an existing account from another country to Japan, check its balance, subscriptions, and preorders. Nintendo says an outstanding balance, active automatic renewal, or unfulfilled preorder can prevent a country/region change. It also warns that funds do not carry over between regions. Read Nintendo’s instructions for changing a Nintendo Account country or region before proceeding.

Choose how to add funds
Nintendo Japan lists credit card, prepaid card or number, and PayPal as categories for adding money to an eShop balance. Its support pages describe prepaid value as a way to add funds, while Nintendo’s general payment guidance says payment methods should match the eShop region. The category list does not establish whether a particular foreign-issued card or foreign PayPal account will be accepted. Nintendo’s payment-region guidance, Japan prepaid-card support, and Japan credit-card support explain the documented options without confirming foreign-account eligibility.

Japanese prepaid cards or codes
A Japanese Nintendo eShop prepaid card or prepaid code is a documented funding route to investigate. Nintendo Japan warns that Japan-market prepaid or download codes may require the Nintendo Account country/region to be Japan. Before paying a seller, verify the code is for Japan, that the seller serves your location, and that the seller’s terms cover your intended use. The official guidance does not establish current availability or authorization for any particular retailer.
Credit card or PayPal
Nintendo Japan lists credit card and PayPal among the available payment categories, but that does not mean every card or PayPal account issued outside Japan will be accepted. The official pages cited here do not settle that question for a specific buyer’s payment method. Check the payment screen and Nintendo’s applicable support information rather than relying on a blanket claim that foreign payment methods always work—or never work.
